Artists release surprise albums for various reasons, and with varying amounts of notice beforehand. The earliest precursor to the surprise album is thought to be David Bowie's Toy, which was recorded in 2000. Many consider Radiohead's In Rainbows to be the first official surprise album. The 2010s were full of surprise albums. David Bowie released the Next Day in 2013, Jay-Z released Magna Carta Holy Grail, and Beyonce released her self-titled album, which is the most popular surprise album to date. In addition, Kendrick Lamar put out Untitled Unmastered, Azealia Banks out Broke With Expensive Taste, and Drake put out if you're reading this it's too late. Aside from him, Kendrick, Solange, Ariana Grande, and Taylor Swift have also announced albums via Twitter. This is how Kendrick let fans know about Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, and how Solange let her fans know about When I Get Home, her follow-up to A Seat at the Table. In the 2020s, Taylor released Folkore and Evermore by surprise, as well as the 3am edition of Midnights. Ariana announced Positions, her most recent album, on Twitter a couple weeks before its release.

Beyoncé and folklore (and evermore which was even more surprising) are the definition of surprise albums. Both were released without people even knowing that those albums even existed the day prior. I was very young at Beyoncé time but vividly remember folklore. Both have one thing in common that is both are masterpieces.

Folklore and Evermore were really a life-shifting experiences for me. Nobody had any idea of them. Literally no one even though Taylor might release anything in 2020. She just released Lover and planned to go on Tour and then in November start re-recording her past album. This wasn't on schedule! Her albums releases are always big events and with Folklore she just said: here's the album, the one only single with music video, there's some merch and that's it few hours before release. Even more impressive is that it was another big genre shift. Before she transitioned from country to pop and with Folklore and Evermore she transitioned from pop to indie folk, indie rock and folk-pop. Even her label had no idea about them, Taylor said she said her label about Folklore just week prior it's release and she was ready to fight for it but her label was completely ok and said she can put whatever she wants anytime she wants - they gave her absolute freedom over her career. There really aren't many artists that can say they have 100% control over their career. Those 2 are true surprise album, no hints just straight-up morning announcement and then release on Midnight. Beyoncé and Taylor are really queens!

beyoncé said it right 'changed the game with that digital drop' and she did. i wasn't a big beyoncé music enjoyer back before she released her self titled album and it's so iconic. the album still sounds so fresh and yet retains it 'time-capsule' feel. the 2nd time i was jolted in my seat when taylor swift dropped 'folklore' piece by piece making a instagram grid and i haven't been the same ever since. the album is so sub dued, meaningful themes, great story telling and such a fresh departure from her pop sound, then she went a step beyond and dropped 'evermore', another great body of work showing her amazing lyricism and artistry. after 'lover', this was exactly what she needed. ah a moment in time.

I separate surprise albums into two types The true immediate surprise where it’s dropped out of thin air The uninvited knock surprise, where someone makes you aware they’re coming but you didn’t have any prior notice besides the announcement close to the surprise

A surprise album to me is not announcing when it’s coming out and it’s simply put out just like Beyoncé’s Self titled album. When that album was released it made waves everywhere on social media and caused chaos (in a good way), I never understand why announcing an album releasing a week, day, or even hour before it drops is considered as a “Surprise album” if the announcement is more of the surprise instead of the actual album.

In my opinion a surprise album does not have any announcement. It just drops. Imagine if someone was planning a surprise party for you but then told you a week ahead of time about the surprise. Yeah… surprise ruined.

It's only a surprise if there is no promotion, otherwise, it is just a shortened roll out period. Which, in the digital era, I feel like should be expected. It's not like you have to wait for Target, Walmart, and the rest to have a CD in stock anymore. Never mind the local shops to get theirs as well.

I don't think just because an artist is big and their album is done should release the album as a surprise drop, it depends on the album, some albums need to have an era for example 1989, teenage dream, After Hours or basically any album that have bangers in it, should have an era and it's moment. Edit: ok not necessarily every album with bangers should be announced before its drop cuz thinking about it an artist can have a surprise album then push some songs, do music videos interviews and live performance after the release like i said before it depends on the album

It’s only a surprise if you don’t tell anyone beforehand. Announcing your project then releasing it yourself so it doesn’t get leaked is just a smart move in my opinion.

I think all of this would have counted as a surprise album if they happened when In Rainbows did. But I think because surprise albums are more common now there's a higher bar for what counts NOW, even if the same thing happening in the past WOULD have counted.

As a Latino who likes Reggaeton music, the best surprise album was Daddy Yankee’s Legendaddy álbum. What was great about that surprise is because there was rumors that he was going to retire and then one day after several months, he announced his retirement in a 3 minute video along with an album that was going to come out three days after his announcement and ticket sales for a world tour. But I would say a surprise album for me would be releasing an album without any warning, just release it out of nowhere. Or at least announcing an album coming out in a few hours.

Radio head announcing an album and ppl not believing its coming maybe speaks to their lack of consistency or issues with the label or something but not really a surprise. i remember listening to a podcast on 2007 where they were talking about the radiohead pay what you want album. I downloaded it (for free lol i was 13) just cause i thought it was cool. I just turned 42 Wednesday 🎉 in 2013 I was 32 and I have neverrrrr before Beyoncé surprise internet drop, woke up one morning and getting online and seeing text and calls about her surprise album drop🤷🏾‍♀️😂😂 she literally broke the internet and didn’t even have to take her mf clothes off👏🏾🙌🏾👌🏾😂😂😂 I felt she had a few bops back then but never felt she was a true to soul R&B girly so I wasn’t a stan but this album had me in a chokehold you hear me😂😂😂the chatter about her even being able to do it and sale it was trending literally the whole year😂😂😂 she is the definition of “I can drop a blank disc and it’ll sell”🤷🏾‍♀️😂😂😂😂
