The ketogenic diet, or more specifically therapeutic nutritional ketosis, has the potential to help a range of psychiatric conditions, including Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Major Depressive Disorder, Anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and more. This makes sense because ketogenic diets have been used for over 100 years to treat epilepsy, and the keto diet is one of the most effective interventions for stopping seizures. Since many psychiatric medications are also used to treat epilepsy, that suggests potentially important shared mechanisms.
In this video, Dr. Bret Scher speaks with a variety of experts - including Julie Milder, Ph.D., Dieticians Beth Zupec-Kania and Denise Potter, and Chris Palmer, MD - about the connection between mental illnesses and seizure disorders, and what that may mean for finding a safe and effective dietary treatment for psychiatric illness.
