It's important to note that the final four songs here were recorded a few months after the initial sessions for this album, and were not apart of the original track list.
I've never heard this album before. It is absolutely amazing, just like all of the Bee Gees music. 💖💖Sometimes I get so lost in the music (and interviews) that I forget that Maurice, Robin and Andy are no longer with us and it's so sad when the realization hits me again. 💔
❤❤❤ first time hearing this album and love all the songs. I don't understand why it was not released.. Love all three brothers. They were all so talented and gorgeous and funny. Miss Robin and Maurice and Andy. I know Barry and Lesley miss them every day as I do. 😢😢😢
The first song (Elisa) was the only Bee Gees' song that the three brothers took turn singing lead in separate verses. So unfortunate the album was not commercially released. Love love love Maurice's voice.
A few of the songs sound very much like the Beatles. I hear "Don't Let Me Down" changed up a bit. Could be Stigwood felt it wasn't original enough. BUT, I'll never fault the Bee Gees. My all-time faves.
@@ARG0T From 1967- onward they had great albums. If the general public did not like them, that is their problem.,They had some really amazing albums that were not popular with the general public, but that does not mean those albums did not have some great songs on them!
I think it was the wrong album for the times. That does not mean the songs were bad- so many beautiful songs on the album! So thankful we can now hear these songs The Bee Gees often dismissed songs /and or albums that were not successful!
Maravilhoso sem palavras .todas as músicas deste álbum são incríveis. Mo. Robin se foram mas deixou um legado que jamais será esquecido. Os 3 irmãos juntos eram incríveis. Amo todas as músicas. ❤BeeGees
This is a masterpiece. Maurice Gibb said 'Odessa' was considered by some to be 'The Bee Gees' 'Sgt. Pepper'. I reckon (in my humble opinion) this is their 'Let It Be'. It's criminal it was never released.
Because of very poor sales and chart success of their previous album "Life in a Tin Can." It was Robert Stigwood's (manager of The Bee Gees and owner of RSO Records) decision. So they started on a new album with the producer Arif Mardin at the helm. It proved to be a winning formula. Still, I like this style of The Bee Gees myself though the next couple of albums are classics and pretty good.
It breaks my heart that this beautiful cooly rocking album was shunned by their record company... How could they not have heard the genius of these songs? It just goes to show how truly amazing the brothers' musical genius was that even their unreleased work is light years ahead of and beyond most other songwriters -musicians of their time. And still is to this day.
What a fabulous album the bee 🐝 gees are the greatest band to ever grace this earth 🌍 and the world of music love ❤️ all their songs shame they didn’t release so much of their beautiful songs 👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
I really love every song on these album ..their song were so creatively at the early careers..I love Barry's rare & smooth voices and love love Robin's sweet ,clear & so beautiful voices ..they were born to be the musicians ..the gifted from heaven..❤❤❤❤❤
And more over I don’t understand why Capitol Records does not release it officially , at least on streaming platforms…some say the original master is lost but this one here is almost perfect, with a bit of studio adjustments it would be definitely flawless
Show fantástico!!
I have this one. Issued in France in 1971. With In the Morning, Butterfly, Coalman, Exit Stage Right... and covers of Beatles song . Very rare, big price on second hand market.
At the time is wasn't what Stigwood wanted your right it is great but your listening in today's world and a fan so that's when Stigwood had Arif Martin work with the BEEGEES and the birth of MAIN COURSE came from that
Traffic have just rereleased only as streaming download an album of the seventies ….so this reinforce my question of months ago….why Capitol Records doesn’t do the same with this album?
As a decades long Bee Gees fan I can say I see why Stigwood shelved this album. It was just not up to the standards of their previous work as a whole. In 1973 the Bee Gees were losing popularity at a massive rate (though not with me) and had to move in a bold new direction. "Life in a Tin Can" was forlorn and sparse sounding compared to "Trafalgar"and "To Whom it May Concern", the two albums which preceded it. But the change of approach failed to bring enough sales to their label. This album sounds to me like a collection of songs rather than a cohesive effort and in that respect, reminds me a bit of "Cucumber Castle". In some ways, they went backwards production-wise instead of forward. Nevertheless, just like CC, there are some wonderful songs here. I would love to hear "Elisa", "Wouldn't I Be Someone", "A Lonely Violin" and "Where is Your Sister" remastered and released to all of us fans of the Brothers Gibb. Whatt'ya say, Barry??
I can see now why it wasn’t released by Stigwood, as it’s no where near good enough. Yes there are nice tunes, but not a patch on previous albums (except Cucumber Castle which was dire, but without Robin and this is better than that). Two or three that may scrape onto other albums but it’s not anywhere near as good as Life in a Tin Can. What’s amazing is it was recorded at the same time, and this should have been released a few months afterwards, and I’m glad it wasn’t, as the cancelling of the album probably shook them up so much that they came up with the wonderful Mr Natural the year after, in 74.
that's your opinion. i found this album refreshing. the reason album tracks often sound similar is because an album is like a book with chapters. it tells a story.. a theme...
Long before they transitioned to hard pop and disco, brothers Barry, Maurice and Robin had it slow and sweet. I heard they had an unreleased album and now...this is it!!! Thanks, RU-vid! I'm blessed.
Such creative genius! Such heavenly voices! Never released…Stigwood said it wasn’t worthy of them…I disagree…based on the times it may not have been commercially accepted, but a masterpiece still the same. Living eyes they said was a flop, but I love that album too…so creative, Barry’s voice is so smooth and enchanting on Nothing Could Be Good. 😎
The sound of a lonely violin is like a lush lullaby that Barry sings to my heart. Then Losers and Lovers is totally upbeat and gypsy-like. They could sing anything and everything and it's perfect!
A great album and thanks for posting it. I can understand why Polydor canceled its release as glam rock and progressive music bands were dominating the UK charts at that time. It is hard to believe The Bee Gees would change direction and dominate the world music scene only 4 years later. The Beatles would never have achieved this as most of their solo albums [with the exception of All Things Must Pass] left much to be desired. The Gibbs were the most gifted musicians of all time. Ray Davies [The Kinks] would have been a close second if they had signed up to EMI instead of Pye.
Someone needs to release this one and the other recordings also. Whoever can needs to DO this! I especially love the early songs. They blessed my heart so much. Deme in Bama.
Think if it would have been released, they would have had another flop after 'Life In A Tin Can'. But I really love that album very much, since I bought it in 1982 as bootleg-LP. Robert Stigwood introduced them to Arif Mardin and the rest of the story is history in music. To me, songs like 'A Lonely Violin', 'Wouldn't I Be Someone', 'Losers And Lovers', 'Home Again Rivers', 'Rocky LA', 'It Doesn't Matter Much To Me', 'King And Country' and 'Dear Mr. Kissinger' are one of a kind. Simply wonderful!
BEE GEES - ''A Kick In the Head Is Worth Eight In the Pants'' - From Wikipedia- ''A Kick in the Head Is Worth Eight in the Pants'' is an unreleased studio album by the Bee Gees. Originally known as ''The Bee Gees Album'', recording began in late 1972 at The Record Plant in Los Angeles around the same time as tracks for ''Life in a Tin Can'' were being recorded. Ten tracks were recorded in October 1972[1] and four more were recorded in January 1973 in London, England. By the end of 1972, The Bee Gees had two albums recorded and ready for release. The first to be released was ''Life in a Tin Can'' in January 1973. The first and only single from that album, "Saw a New Morning", was not a hit in the US peaking at No. 94. The parent album fared only slightly better, climbing to No. 69. When it was time to release the follow-up album, Robert Stigwood, manager of The Bee Gees and owner of RSO Records, rejected the proposed album after the failure of the lead single, "Wouldn't I Be Someone". The album was shelved, and only a few songs ever received official release. "Elisa", "Wouldn't I Be Someone" and "King and Country" were released as singles in 1973, and then again in 1990 on the box set ''Tales from the Brothers Gibb''. Another track, "It Doesn't Matter Much to Me", was released on a budget label compilation album in the UK in 1974. That track was re-recorded for inclusion on The Bee Gees' 1974 album, ''Mr. Natural'', but was only released as the B-side of the title track when it was released as a single. A 30-second clip of "Castles in the Air" made it on to a 1978 promotional album called ''The Words and Music of Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb''. . Track listing- The Record Plant 1972- "Elisa" - 2:53 (released as the B-side of "Wouldn't I Be Someone" in June 1973) "Wouldn't I Be Someone" - 5:44 (released as a single in June 1973 in edited form at 3:24) "A Lonely Violin" - 3:15 "Losers And Lovers" - 3:17 "Home Again Rivers" - 3:18 "Harry's Gate" - 3:30 "Rocky L. A." - 3:54 "Castles In The Air" - 3:41 (30-second clip released in 1978 on a RSO Records promo album) "Where Is Your Sister" - 3:11 "It Doesn't Matter Much To Me" - 4:29 (released on the UK compilation ''Gotta Get a Message to You'' in 1974) London 1973 "King And Country" - 5:23 (released as the B-side of "Wouldn't I Be Someone" in Germany only) "Jesus In Heaven" - 3:26 "Life Am I Wasting My Time" - 2:57 "Dear Mr. Kissinger" - 4:09 Personnel - Barry Gibb - vocals, rhythm guitar Robin Gibb - vocals Maurice Gibb - vocals, bass, piano, keyboard, guitars Additional personnel - Alan Kendall - lead guitar Jim Keltner - drums
I doubt Barry Gibb has the original recordings. How did they end up in the hands of the bootleg -gers?! I love almost every track on this album. It isn't irrelevant in 2023, in my opinion. Melodic, with gorgeous harmonies -- Most of the world will never have the chance to love these songs, much less listen to them in all their glory, remastered. Atlantic Records -- you dropped the ball on an huge opportunity!
This is a great album! Why wasn’t it ever released? The Bee Gees will forever live in my heart. I’m so glad I was part of their generation. I know their music will be heard by many generations to come. ❤ RIP Maurice, Robin and Andy. 😢
It's simply amazing and so aproperate to my sadness yet uplifting in thoughts of all I have is love! The instruments playing so raw in my ears is absolutely a divine intervention to my soul and the vocals a pure rare sublime love and touch to the heart that awakens my heart and soul my eyes are cleared now from tears! Music good for the mind body and soul! #TheBeeGees this is a pure enjoyment to listen as I feel inove with ever word if ever song! God is good, thanks for sharing! Love you all! #karenhead
i hear my brothers since i´m 6 years old, now my 53 is coming ;-) and wow, how crazy and also lovely it is, to get this songs now. Straight into our hearts.
The Music Executives that shelved this are idiots, I think the songs are great reflective of their better sixties albums. This isn't moving in a new direction that apparently the Executives wanted but I think it is one of their most solid albums beginning to end. I might have left a couple songs off that weren't as good as the rest.
Great record, I remember an LP that was released in 73 with Wouldnt I be Someone as the open track. Had a great photo of the three of them performing a tune around a piano. Bet, Wouldnt I be someone would have been a hit if it was released as a single. Still say Odessa was their best work IMO!!
Odessa is under-rated for sure. I love Still Waters, Main Course, it's all great stuff. Earlier work, though, too Beatle-esque and they admit that themselves.
I think you’re talking about Best of Bee Gees vol. 2, that one had Wouldn’t I be someone as the opener, at least on 1st pressings. Great compilation album by the way! That was my road to discover their early 70s songs.
A beautiful album…it should have been released with Life in a Tin Can, a double album, the two albums have a lot in common musically especially that country feeling; Barry should pick up at least one track for his country project Greenfields
Especially with dearth of good, pop music now this would be appreciated as the Bee Gees lost wilderness album. Forget there are no hit singles. The tracks are creative gems and the singing is sensational. The critics that thought that Odessa was better than 1st would be equally impressed
Sometimes record executives really don't know what they're doing. They're just guessing that an album won't sell. But 1973 was a year when Tony Orlando, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Helen Reddy, and The Carpenters all had huge hits so it's not as if the production of this album was just wrong for 1973.
