The list Jinshi was referring to included businesses that had dealt with Fengmings family. Maomao was sold to the Rear Palace by one of these businesses.
For the miscommunication between Jinshi and Maomao, to be fair to Jinshi a lot of Maomao's dialogue in that scene was all her internal thoughts. If she'd voiced even a fraction of those thoughts to Jinshi then he wouldn't have misunderstood what she was trying to actually say. Courtesans, especially high-ranking ones like the Three Princesses, main role was to entertain first and foremost. This could involve playing games with their clients (some involving alcohol), playing various musical instruments and/or singing and/or dancing, pouring tea/alcohol for their guests, reciting poetry, or just being conversation partners. For high-ranking courtesans as well they definitely wouldn't have slept with every client, as this could "diminish their value". The lower ranked courtesans however were more likely to have to consider sex work as part of their job with most of their clients in order to pay off their debt to the house that took them in and educated them. Jinshi with the mushrooms reminds me so much of Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club, but yeah he doesn't have quite as much of the F Boy vibe Tamaki gives off. Jinshi's a little more subtle in his use of seduction in comparison to Tamaki.
You feel the same for both Frieren and this show is because they are both Senien ( anime targeted towards older demographic ) I noticed the shift in genres I found interesting turning 22, I still watch some shonen but senien just its so damn hard sometimes.
Fengming’s family was rich merchant with lots of business and personal relationships. As a punishment and security measure anyone associating with the family would be fired (including children associated with these other families). It seems the kidnappers had some association with Fengming’s family so she is included on the to be fired list.
I had the same thoughts about Frieren and overall feeling of the show. It's just so well written and organic, took me longest time to start both shows but now they are probably at least in top 5 of all time.
parents would sell their own children into indentured servetude, and its kinda hard to tell if someone was a 'legal' slave or not, so the kidnappers sold maomao to a family related to fungming who sold her to the rear palace. thats why maomao said she could leave in 2 years, because thats how long a time the sold her work for .
Yes, Jinshi is a noble. The mystery at this point given all that's been implied or suggested is whether he's just a high-ranking officer from a noble family, the current Emperor's younger brother nobody ever sees because he's said to be sickly, or if he is in fact Lady Ah-Duo's son and he was swapped, the current Emperor's son.
The way they explained Maomao's family connections with Fengming, in the anime, was very vague so I can't really blame you for not getting it right away. It took me a few rewinds to understand what was going on. As everyone else in the comments section has mentioned, Maomao isn't related to Fengming... rather their families have had dealings in the past. And the way they supposedly punished Fengming's involvement was by also punishing everyone who were either related to them, or have had any sort of business dealings with them, at one point or another.
Almost, but not quite. Maomao being the daughter of the eunuch doctor has no relation with her being fired. To help family that could feed their children, the royal palace has a "program" allowing family to "rent" their daughter to the (rear)royal palace as servant. The contract is of 2 years, the daughter is pay a salary with a part of it is paid the the family whom "rented" their daughter. The daughter is keep in the rear palace with no way to leave, she is feed/clothes/'cared' & the family is getting paid, for 2 years (or until the daughter do something costing too much, or executed for making mistake). There is no real control if the girl 'rented' is the family daughter or a kidnapped girl (the both can say they were kidnapped to avoid being sent there). Maomao was kidnapped. Her 'family' (kidnappers) whom 'rented' her to the (rear)royal palace are the ones with business deal with Fengming family. Therefor, on paper, Maomao is 'part' of a 'family' having deal with fengming family, and got fired.

Of course our God and Goddess of misunderstandings do it again. This has been and will be an ongoing theme in this series. She knows he is not a Eunuch and prob son of the Emperor, but to protect herself she is in denial and refuses to recognize the situation. This is partially self defense due to HUGE status differences as well as her excessively self criticism of her looks.
Consorts can be entertainers although sexual roles also play a part but additional cost and some high ranking talented courtesans can avoid sexual services.
