What’s happening in this A Knight’s Tale movie clip?
Before the game starts with Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell from The Holiday) as his adversary, the lady's maid (Berenice Bejo from The Artist) approaches William and says she has a message from the lady (Shannyn Sossamon from The Rules of Attraction). The lady wishes to tell William that her name is Lady Jocelyn and hands over a piece of cloth. William accepts it gratefully and is inspired before facing Count Adhemar.

I love how Adamar indirectly compliments Will. Adamar acknwledges that Will has a bare basic technique, but that this doesnt matter because Will hits so hard.

That the thing about high brute force. You can have 0 technique, the opponent still has to deal with that massive strength issue. If you slip up just a little on the technique, you get hammered

Wills used to labor. So he grew strong physically. Adamar is trained so fights with technique more than just strength. Will simply grew to utilize both resulting in the ending.

"Her name is Jocelyn." But of course it is. Also, this is an absolutely ridiculous sport...but I have seen live jousting about a half dozen times and it is freaking amazing.

It was quite ironic how Ahdemar said, “see me again when you’re worthy” despite missing on the second pass. He’s highly skilled but he’s still human. The only jouster with a perfect record in the film is actually prince Edward. What’s interesting is on the second pass if you pause at the right time you can see Ahdemar’s lance was tilted upwards indicating he aimed for the helmet already and that was his practice run.

I feel like he was still aiming for the chest, but didn't expect William to actually adapt to how he was hit. When he saw that he was about to lose though, that's when he took it up a notch, remembering that William doesn't lift his chin. So the lance is less likely to glance off.

I think the point is to make you think he is the best knight, but then at the end we realize what s important to be a knight is what is under the armor, and it contrasts with William fighting him without armor at the end of the movie

@@unhommequicourt Btw...Ademar didn't die, right? It's a bit strange that transition in the end, but i feel like that the last frame of him laying down on the field, he moved his arm.

I would say it is a decent movie. Don't expect something historical. A bit dull entertainment. But the actors are doing a good job.

Best way I can describe it is to imagine a classic sports movie, like Rocky, Sandlot, or Remember the Titans. Now imagine that it's set in a somewhat anachronistic version of the medieval period, and the sport, accordingly, is jousting. It's an imperfect description to say the least, but it's the best one I can give.

I'm fairly sure that competing knights had to supply their own lances. One of the benefits of competitions over several days, even weeks, would be that if a knight ran low on serviceable lances, his squires could fashion new lances with local lumber. Or purchase them from local vendors. However, the movie does play up just how often lances would shatter. I've been to full charge, full contact jousting events. Shattered lances, while spectacular to witness, just did not happen every tilt.
