Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

Tip: when asking questions it is best to start a new comment instead of a reply to an existing comment because RU-vid makes it easier for creators to track down comments if they are independent of a previous comment. In response to your question, the sign about which you are asking is sometimes glossed (or labeled) as "BEAT" and generally is used to mean "this beat that" or "I beat you" or "we beat you." It is directional and is aimed in the direction of the person or team or entity that was beaten. My comment was that it was interesting that the "D" beat the "C" (in its influence of the "E." (For that particular name "Cedric" and the way I was spelling the name. That isn't a general rule just a specific instance that I thought was interesting. Other people might spell Cedric differently. What would be really interesting is to find a Deaf person named Cedric or with a family member named Cedric and see how someone who has spelled Cedric a thousand times spells Cedric!) For an example of "beat," see: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BB5yx-xb8CA.html For a one-handed version see: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ubuS4sZI2wM.html However, as with most concepts, there are other ways to sign beat as in to overcome an opponent: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_betaUws0n8.html Neither of those mean beat-up (as in abuse). My fingerspelling is an old Corolla with a cracked windshield, missing a door, on blocks in a backyard with a bulldog living under it.

I think this set me back 20 years. 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ I might have to watch the video 2O-30 times. And I was so proud of my 2-finger closed "e". 😄 But thank you. That was a good lesson.

I hope to create videos for all of the other letters too. "E" certainly seems to have the most forms of the fingerspelled alphabet. My favorite version so far is the backwards three-fingered clawed "E" that (sometimes) shows up when spelling Mathew! Hmm actually, you've got a 3-fingered clawed E in your profile name! Tweety! It then morphs into a more standard for the duplicate. Of course that all depends on how fast (and loosely) someone spells Tweety.

So helpful thanks Dr.Vicars! I have a bad habit of always using the closed 2 finger e and am always getting in trouble for it - yet I wasn’t sure when exactly to use which and my fingers just liked that best 😆. Lots of good-e’s to practice ;)

Thank you so much for this very informative video. I can see how intuitive this is and definitely helps my fingerspelling feel more natural and fluid. Tysm

Loved this, thanks, and good fingerspelling practice too. Question slightly off subject, but what determines signing a word in a circular motion like at 5:48 when signing "sale" or later at 40:49 doing it agin but modifying the "e". I've seen the circle with some other words but was curious as to why words like "sale" or "july" I've seen in a circular motion while others aren't. 🤓🙂
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 месяца назад
Hi Rich! A-R or A-L movements tend to have a fairly big thrust. Same too with "LY" and "LE" type movements. So we see that circular movement for words like: sale, style, early, July and similar words. That "J" in July really sets the hand up for a circular movement.

This is good practice, my favorite is fingerspelling MEOW, like loading and launching a catapult. Oh, someone recently fingerspelled "EXIT" by kicking the E rotating into the X. Sooooo many nuances, and lately I misread an S as an M, it's all about flexibility. Oh, it seems the cascading hand in the sign "Beautiful" is like the fingerspelled "IFUL" cascade~

Great videos, thank you! Do you have a video/resource about all sign words that are used/understood by non asl speakers too? Like numbers 1,2,3 ?

Such and interesting idea -- signs that non-signers recognize. I don't have a video on that "yet."

Thank you for the great video! I was curious if you have any advice on how students can understand fingerspelling better in conversation. I have troubles understanding fingerspelling that is faster and always have to ask them to slow down in order to understand.

Massive exposure and repetition! Your brain gets better and better at recognizing fingerspelling the more you practice. If you are using a phone, try this site: asl.ms/mobile/ If you are using a desktop browser, try this version: asl.ms/ Also, check out my fingerspelling playlist: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-va1aAXpVr2w.html&pp=gAQBiAQB

Hi Dr. Bill, I've noticed, in your vids, that words with double letters (Conner 4:45, Reese 9:45, Emmett 11:08) the 2 letters are either signed individually or you slide the hand a bit, is there a difference? Are there times when you should do the double letter or is the slide of the hand appropriate for double letter words/signs? Thank you.
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 месяца назад
It varies. To do double letters during fingerspelling you can slide, slightly bounce, reform the second letter slightly to the side, use a combination approach, or in the case of ZZ use a V hand. Any list of "rules" you come across for double letters think of more as suggestions than rules. For every "rule" someone claims -- I can generally find skilled Deaf signers breaking that rule. Anyway, if a letter has internal contact like M, N, or T it is fairly common to reform the letter. If the double is on the end we see more sliding than reforming. I think this would be a good topic for an instructional video and will see what I can do.
