Earlier this year (2021) my son bought a 1997 Passat TDI with less than 100K miles. The fuel gauge is very accurate and he has gotten over 750 miles on a tankful. There are quite a few unique features about this car, notably the way the door key actuates not only the power door locks, but also the windows. He is enjoying it very much.
Oh hey! Funny seeing you here. I really have been enjoying the car. It has its issues, but it's been very anyway @VWestlife Thank you for sharing your car with us! I saw this video when you first posted it, but didn't know anything about these cars at the time. Now I own one! They are going up in value and are very hard to find. A few weeks ago I was even followed to a restaurant by someone that offered to buy it from me.
Huge fuel tank. I like that the temp and (especially) how the gas gauge is labeled, gives you an idea of how long you'll be waiting at the pump to fill up/how many gallons you'll need to a full tank.
It's funny how much has changed with the Passat. I have a 2007 Passat and it is fab. It looks great (better than the new one in my opinion), so much space, leather heated seats, wood, touch screen and it's very comfy snd sporty, (it's a 1.9 tdi) and it was only 3,500 euro
I love this generation of Passat. I own a 2000 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro which is part of the later VAG B5/C5 generation, and it too has been an extremely solid, safe, and reliable daily.
Mine was white with 300K on the ODO very solid car but it was no match to the head-on collision that took it from me. The insurance gave $8500.00 pay off, at first I thought it was a mistake because $8500.00 for a car with 300K miles no way. but according to the adjuster these cars are made for the long haul. one of the few former cars I actually miss.
Also, great car. For an almost 20 year old car, it's a fine machine. My uncle used to had a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta, which looks similar to this Passat, but not in as good of condition as this one.
Mr. DrScopeify i bet you vote for Trump, because you sound like a person believing in the great American Dream. Cool you have resources , power, great economy, but are you 100% sure that are you free to do anything that you like to do, without somebody to spy you, or at least to create something like 200 Mile per gallon car without to be assassinated by the oil companies. Dude if I write right now word "Terrorism" or "9/11"i'm pretty sure that the America will start to spy me, and watch everything i do. No mater i have freedoms. When America forgive to Snowden, then your country will be cool to live in.
In Europe you do NOT need a fire extinguisher in the car, not in Germany certainly and AFAIK also not in the other European countries! In Germany you need the triangle, safety west and a first aid kit that's not expired.
In Ireland, over half of the cars on the road are diesels, because petrol (gas in the US) is in most cases over 10 cents more per litre than diesel. At the moment, diesel and petrol is very expensive in Ireland, costing over €1.60 ($1.81) a litre for diesel or $6.85 per US gallon and over €1.70 ($1.92) a litre for petrol or $7.27 per US gallon. This is probably the highest price of fuel in Ireland in decades. So you can see why few people have petrol (gas) cars in Ireland.
To be honest, I rarely seen this generation of the Passat driven today in Somerset County (I live in Hillsborough, NJ). I would be interested, but I'm letting someone else get it. That is really in good condition and selling for $2500 is a steal. Argh, so tempting...but I can't drive manual.
I hope it goes to a good home - those cars are built to last!! Strong chassis/body, diesel engine and a manual transmission - the perfect recipe for a great car.
Great car. Built like a tank. I had one, the same model, same color, 1.9TD but without air conditioning. Only words of praise about her. Spacious, low consumption, reliable engine but I had to sell it for the sake of progress. I miss it.
3:46 That affirmation is not really true. These days (or in the late 2000s) you get a temperature of the engine gage or a kind of cursor in the LED which is above the steering wheel (like in the 2004 Dacia Logan cars)
Some new cars still have a temperature gauge (usually programmed to stay in the exact middle position unless the engine is either cold or overheating), but most don't.
I would be interested in purchasing this. Right now I've been driving my all original G60 Corrado because I broke the transmission in my subaru swapped vanagon. My VR6 GTI is 1500 miles away but doesn't sport the same utility as something like a passat. I've been wanting a TDI for a long time and yours is the right year. how much do you want for it?
I could come get it with the truck and trailer or depending on the time frame or even have a friend give me a ride. if you're okay with meeting me at an airport I could also fly out and pick it up.
I'm here in NJ within extremely close driving distance to the airport and somerset county-- I can pick you up at Newark Liberty and drive you to wherever if needed if/when this happens. also you need to get pizza. NJ pizza is some of the best pizza you'll ever have. it'll definitely be a change of pace from those late-night dominos deliveries for you out there in the boonies of NC.
I had the front bumper and grille replaced after a minor front-end accident and they blended in the paint to match. The rest of the car was never repainted. Sorry.
My god that car is beautiful. If it was available for sale today I would buy it in a heartbeat. Old VWs like this are extremely hard to come by and this is a really cool example. Do you happen to know what happened to the car from 2016 on?
The Passats that were Audis (up to 2005 e.g. 3B,3BG) still are very good IMO. The only thing you need to remember to change in the TDIs is the front control arms and bushings (depending where you drive every 30-70k) and oil (every 15k)
This is very accurate if you talk about petrol models. At least here in Europe, most petrol VWs were all underpowered, heavy on fuel consumption and not very reliable. As for diesels, I completely disagree. The VW TDIs up to 2005 are very reliable and good to drive.
DrScopeify funny thing is that my 09 Honda fit has 150k on the odometer and absolutely no issues with a previous owner that was totally neglectful with its maintenance (aka my mom), original almost everything other than oil and filters and it ran absolutely fine no squeaking noises or anything. Now that I've got the car I'm changing all of its fluids belts and tensioner and the car just runs like a dream. Nothing can beat Japanese cars reliability.
Yuri Ck What are you talking about. Modern VWs are great cars and are one of the main cars in European big cities. They are affordable, easy to navigate in a city and economic comfortable cars. The last generation of Golfs is especially awesome. I would take any German car over some honda anytime.
Still looks better than 99.99% of the cars made in the last 10 years. Hahaha in the early-mid 2000's I would've thought that it was ugly but cars nowadays are such a disaster that these bland 90's cars... Actually do not look that bland anymore! Ha.
ah america. i heard atleast 2 big block v8's fly by. unlike our beloved Romania where all you see is some e36 crapboxes or e46 320d with chopped off silencers.
Here in Eastern Europe, this car is verry cheap, around $500. Same engine, same miles. Everyone has 1.9TDI ( VW jetta, passat, golf, Audi A3, A4, Skoda Fabia, Octavia, etc.. Good Cars and rock solid engines
Low miles for a B4 these days. I always liked the way the B4s drive. Finding one in nice shape is getting tough. Redoing the seals on the IP isn't too hard to do. You can use VCDS to re-calibrate the pump after having it apart.
If I were closer than an 8 hour drive I'd buy this car. Sweet looking ride and looks to be in great shape. Good luck with the sale. I miss having a manual transmission car.
Ah man I never though you'd sell it.... but hey, like you said in the video, might as well let someone else enjoy it if it'll just sit at your house eh? You've kept it meticulously maintained too, someone's getting a fantastic car. Are you planning on getting another secondary car, or are you just going to stick with the Subaru? You drive a standard so smoothly too, to a passenger it would feel like an automatic. I've known a lot of people who've had a standard for years and they still drive very herky-jerky lol. I can drive a standard (and I learned on an old truck with an almost completely worn out clutch haha), but I still prefer an automatic; there's some driving conditions where a standard would be a nightmare, such as steep hills.
I will probably be getting another second car at some point, maybe next spring. I'd like to get a hatchback, for the times I need to carry something too big to fit in my Subaru's trunk, and preferably a 2-door, since all the cars I've owned have been 4-doors.
I still own as a third car, an even older one, a B3 (pretty much the same) and no rust and everything is just fine. Still runs 193kph on diesel idi and 9sec 62mph(1.9 turbo without ecu or ic, but with upgraded pump and turbocharger). Mine is vagon version(variant).
My Mazda6 is among those with an idiot light in the place of a temperature gauge. It annoys me so very much. But hey, unlike my last car it has a tach...
Not a bad little car. My close friend just got a VW, a little newer then this one and I forgot the exact model lol. But they are truly good little cars. I'm still driving my Vibe around that I got when I was 16 lol. And I love it!
I love your channel. I have learned much about my own 97 passat tdi through your experience. I love mine but it rides really soft so I wonder if my struts or shocks are shot. Engine is marvelous and I get about 40 to 42 mpg. I can lug in fifth gear at 40 MPH so much torque, and once up to speed, engine has so much power and pull in all gears but 4th and even 5th are amazing. I would like to know how you feel about selling your B4 now that it is long gone. God bless you sir.
Very nice car indeed. Completely off topic, but I hope to sell my current vehicle soon, I would love a diesel with a manual gearbox, particularly a wagon. Looking for something odd...I'm thinking about an old Citroen possibly a BX or ZX. Would love a diesel W123 but they are a lot to insure.
Beautiful car! I currently drive a 2011 Jetta TDI and it has been the most efficient, reliable vehicle ive ever owned. If you didnt live so far away i would be keen to make you an offer!
It had an 18.5 gallon fuel tank and got 45 mpg easy. Even pushing it. I got rid of it at 210 k. When my friend stopped using home heating oil I helped empty his oil tank by putting it in my car. Also ran well on kerosene.
Miss US Volkswagen Jetta is in new condition and has virtually no rust that's here in the Netherlands different here almost all of them rusting away success with sales
Here in Denmark those Passats are gone! Taken by the rust devil. So seeing a minter like this is fantastic! Furthermore the ones we got in Denmark never had any equipment like power windows and let alone air-conditioning!
