"Are you crying!? There's no crying in baseball!" One of the most memorable lines in film history

I personally knew one of the ladies on the team. She passed away a few years ago. Her name was Katie James (Katherine Herring), she is listed in the Baseball Hall of Fame in NY. She had two sons, both very athletic too. Her grandson Keith even played semi pro ball. When I was a teenager she would sometimes throw and catch baseball with me. Her husband, Paul James retired as Master Sgt. in the Air Force. They were some of the nicest people.

My favourite scene is the bit where the black lady catches the ball with her bare hand, nods and smiles. It's a subtle reference to the fact that this was before Jackie Robinson played his first pro baseball game. Sure, you could have female baseball players (in skirts, while the guys were at war) as long as they were all white.

You’re the first person I’ve seen who tears up at the part where Shirley Baker can’t read her name on the roster. Me too! Everyone cried at the end but that part gets to me. She’s nervous and embarrassed and a kind stranger meets her with gentleness and understanding. Warms my heart.

Marla has to be my favorite character in this movie. Her relationship with her Dad was almost a tear jerker for me. And, she went from resembling an Owl in the gym to a Beautiful Bride that could hit a baseball over the fence.. My favorite line was from the game announcer, actor David Lander(Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley), when Dotty hit that line drive at Kit, (over the P.A.) "Bite me in the Butt and call me an Apple!!!"

Such a fun reaction. This movie always has me smiling and getting emotional.

This film is iconic. What a great true story, the cast is amazing, and they managed to work in some really funny moments & heartwarming moments. Penny Marshall did a wonderful job directing, too.

It wasn't until I started watching reactions to this that I learned old Dottie is NOT Geena Davis. It was Lynn Cartwright. The resemblance is uncanny, I totally thought it was Geena Davis made up to look older.

Marla Hooch was definitely the star of the Charm School sequence because the actress was clearly the standout with doing things awkwardly and looking hysterical. I loved her in the news reel segment too. All the girls were presented as available ladies except for poor Marla Hooch whom was standing way in the back and it looked like to me she was flipping off the camera, took a look at that part again closely.💗😂

I fell for Madonna hard when this movie came out. I must have watched this a hundred times.

That Betty Spaghetti scene always makes everyone reacting to it just tear up hard because of the sudden switch it pulls on us. We're lead to believe that letter is for Dottie because she front and center of the camera but suddenly the letter is handed to Betty Spaghetti and we just break into subbing 😭.

I loved that the actual people played the older versions themselves at the end. Great movie

This movie is a love letter to everyone's nostalgia. This movie hits differently if you have memories playing in a High School team and community team.

Dottie dropped the ball on purpose. They showed that she could hang on to the ball earlier. ❤❤❤

I have always believed that Dottie dropped the ball on purpose so Kit could have her moment. You know that from the look on Dottie's face as she watches Kit celebrate.

"There's no crying in baseball!" I love Lori Petty. It is a shame she did a number of bad movies (not this one) and fell off the map. Tank Girl (1995) was her at her best, even if the rest of the movie was a disaster. Fun Fact: The screenwriters wrote the part of Ernie Capadino especially for Jon Lovitz. Action Star Fact Fact: Geena Davis really does catch a pop up behind her back. It was supposed to be done by a stunt double, but the double was having trouble. So Davis gave it a go. Sweet Karma Fact: After they bring out the Peaches for their first game, and announce all of them, they run out on the field. In the background, you can see Rosie O'Donnell trip over a wire and fall down. Authentic Battle Damage Fact: Many of the injuries and bruises in the film were real injuries that the actresses received during filming. The "strawberry" bruise Renée Coleman received on her thigh while sliding into a base remained for over a year. Historical Fact: Tom Hanks' character, Jimmy Dugan, is loosely based on real-life baseball sluggers Jimmie Foxx and Hack Wilson. The film portrays the league as initially unpopular and unprofitable, until demeaning gimmicks are used to attract male audiences. In reality, the league was popular and profitable from the start, largely because it played in towns in the upper Midwest that had no way of watching a live baseball game. Eventually, the league grew into a ten-team two-division league. The advent of televised baseball games in the early fifties, however, would lead to the demise in the popularity of the league. The storyline was inspired by the career of baseball legend Dottie Collins. During World War II, Collins played for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and pitched seventeen shutouts during her six-year career.

Haven't seen this in forever but remember it being a good movie

This is one of favorite all-time movies. I've seen it so many times, and it never fails to bring a lot of tears at the end, especially during Madonna's song "This Used to Be My Playground." Why do so many good times have to be so short and end up stuck in the past?😭

Never was a big fan of Madonna, but I love the character she plays in this movie and she plays it really well!!

I saw this in the theater when I was 15 and LOVED IT! It's one of my favorites!

This movie let's you know that sport can be more than a game. My grandson who was a senior , played their last football game.( They lost) They were hugging each other in a group. My daughter in law asked me why are they doing it so long. I told her they would be moving apart for each other. Graduation and moving on. This is their bonding moment.

This movie probably saved Tom Hanks' career from being stuck in only comedies, giving him a transition into more serious roles. He was insanely good in this role, along with all the ladies. Directed by a lady, the great Penny Marshall.

I am in complete agreement that it is truly sad to see people in movies who are basically there BECAUSE they are supposed to be “ugly”, and their ugliness is the entire point of a joke, or sometimes several jokes. This happened a lot in 80s movies, even movies that were otherwise very good films, like the romantic drama “Somewhere in Time”. Whenever I see it, my heart sinks. You are a kindred spirit perhaps, because you’re the only other person I’ve ever heard remark about it.

When you said you played basketball & soccer I knew you'd probably like this movie a lot. I was never very good at softball but I did love playing it. There is just something special about being part of a team & I thought that was one of the many things this movie did very well.

My favorite line is with Madonna, saying something like "You know, what if while playing and suddenly, whoops my boobs fall out", and the response, "There aint no man in this country who hasnt seen YOUR boobs", being a true burn towards Madonna, and her pre-acting days nude photos.

Just rewatched it tonight. Great movie one of my favorites. Madonna and Rosie O Donnell really bonded and became best friends in real life. Both ladies lost their moms when they were young.

the women that were playing ball over the end credits were the REAL ball players of the AAGPBL.

9:20 It wasn't all that unusual back then for farm kids or poor kids not to be able to read. My mom was one of 12 kids and she had to drop out of school in the 7th grade to help raise her younger siblings when her mom died. She could read and all, but she was embarrassed to do so in front of other people.

One of my favorite movies . Being a youth in the 90s . I have fond memories. The ending is quite intense . Wonder if Dotty purposely dropped the catch or was its Kits determination and grit . I guess will never know. The end will have you in tears. Great film.

MAJOR LEAGUE should be your best baseball comedy. Followed by THE NATURAL. Your comedy was funny. But it was tears that made the reaction real.

My sister is 6 years older than me. I love her, but sister shadows... In grammar school, for the first week of every grade, as the teacher was learning our names and faces, my name was "Margie's little sister." I'm probably rememberinhg it wrrong and it wasn't for the whole week, but I remember it that way. It's funny long afterward, but at the time, a shadow that meant I had to purposefully go opposite of her in things I explored and interests I had. I had to be opposite of her if I didn't want to retain the name "Margie's little sister." I like the movie, but Margie was the athlete in so many sports, so it doesn't speak to me in the same way.

This is definitely one of favorite movies!!! I think Penny Marshall (Laverne from Laverne & Shirley) did an AMAZING job directing….and personally it’s one of my Top 3 Tom Hanks roles 💯

The facts of this story as it was being told occurred before Jackie Robinson was selected to integrate the men's baseball league. I don't know if the women's league was ever integrated in the 12 years they played. But hats off to Penny Marshall for the scene that the women were just as good to have played.

This story was set in 1945. Jackie Robinson was the first black playerin the major leagues in 1947, over huge opposition.They had enough problems getting women in professional baseball even with a war going on that sucked up all the male players. Woman black ballplayes would absolutely not have been accepted.

During ww2 there was a real professional women's baseball league.

Jackie Robinson broke the racial line in the MLB after World War II. There's no way a woman's league set up during World War II would have been integrated. Nowadays, we see how ridiculous and stupid that is, so I appreciate that they showed the black lady's skills. I always get chills and a tear in my eye when she throws that ball back.

I don't understand why ppl reacting to this movie never watch the end where the real women of baseball in those days are out in the field in their 70-80's playing ball, it's the best and most touching part.

As a kid I felt sorry for Kit. As an adult my dislike for Kit grows. I can't stand how Kit emotionally blackmails Dottie when things don't go her way.

During WW2, the US government devised a plan to empower women so they would go to work, filling the jobs of the men who were fighting overseas. They created the still-recognized poster of Rosie the Riveter, a woman with a head scarf on, showing off her bicep with the slogan "We Can Do It!" This is also when women really began wearing pants, and pants cut specifically for women came out on the market.They grew their hair long, showing their sense of empowerment. Since Major League Baseball was pretty much dead at the time with the men gone, the owners needed players, so they started scounting women in order to entertain the people. But, this came at a cost. The men had to calm the male ego by putting the women in skirts (which was dangerous for the players), making promotional videos ensuring the women were still "feminine" and focusing on their looks, while forcing them to go to charm schools. They government then played another nasty trick on the women during the 1950s. After the war was over, and they weren't needed in the workforce anymore, they launched campaigns telling women that their new jobs were to stay at home. The iconic round skirt with a cinched waist came into fashion to accentuate a more traditionally feminine figure, as well as magazine and advertising propaganda that shamed women about everything from how they cooked, to how they SMELLED. Lysol was marketed as a douche, and the ads literally said that if your husband wasn't paying attention to you or cheating on you, it was because your lady parts smelled. A lot of women became addicted to sedatives and alcohol during that time, missing the freedom and purpose they had during the 40s. This is when the revolutionary book 'The Feminine Mystique' came out, written by Betty Friedan, giving a voice to women who felt trapped in their homes. This started the 2nd wave of feminism, which had its own problems (the effects of which we still see today). But it did give women who wanted something besides a lonely life at home all day long, some hope.

u gotta realize what years this covered and what society's views of women in sports was. not saying it was right but that's the way it was. we've come so far...of course, this wouldn't happen today.

I feel like you missed a lot of key moments (and points) in this movie, India.

It's a nice story, but it isn't true. Women's baseball was popular immediately. There was no struggle, and there were no gimmicks to get people to come to the games. There was a bit of charm school, but it wasn't emphasized, and the women weren't chosen for their looks. The uniforms were real. It's doubtful any of the players complained about them. They were making money. World War II was pulling the country out of an economic depression that had begun 14 years earlier, in 1929. They knew how hard money was to come by. When the league went out of business after the 1953 season, it was mostly because television had gone nationwide and was broadcasting major league games.

India, I love your reactions. I gotta ding you on this one. Betty getting the telegram that her husband died is required viewing. It grounds the movie and tells you, "Yeah we got fun and games, but this is also real life."

28:10-29:00. "Grow up.....chill out." Agreed. To be honest, Kit is kind of a pain. Back in the barn she was all, "Nothing's ever gonna happen here, Dottie. Help me get where things are happening!" So Dottie does, but all Kit does once she's out "where things are happening" is gripe and moan and complain anyway. She's just determined to be miserable. Hard to root for her for 90% of the movie. "Stillwell Angel." ⚾️😏😇

most people really didn't remember or pay attention to the womens baseball league because like in most sports, the mens teams overshadow them in terms of popularity and money. Same with the current womens basketball league. Women in general don't pay much attention to sports, even womens sports. Men usually pay attention to mens sports. For men, we watch women's sports for the women and not their talent. Men are visual creatures so we watch attractive women sports. We watch mens sports for the talent, we watch womens sports for the women. The great thing about this movie was that it actually brought back some interest in the olds womens baseball league that many forgot about, or didn't know about.
