About A League of Their Own: In 1943, Carson Shaw travels to Chicago to try out for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. There, she meets other women who also dream of playing pro baseball and makes connections that open up her world. Rockford local Max Chapman also comes to the tryouts but is turned away. So I've been browsing over the comments under this video and something really stands out here. Critic wise, the people who actually watched the series and not just the trailer were pleasantly surprised by the quality (in terms of story writing and characters) and just the show in its self. In comparison, the people who ONLY watched the trailer are leaving the worst reviews. This is only an observation and I know people on other platforms have been rating this show differently and obviously not everyone who has watched it liked it. I'm only pointing out what I've seen in this comment section so far.

Just finished this phenomenal series last night. Loved the movie and loved the series -- how it digs deeper into the complexities of attempting to create a women's baseball league during wartime and in a world filled with the subjugation of women.

This series has absolutely nothing to do with the actual historical context of what happened! They have taken a movie wherein they took liberties with historical information in the first place, and then completely distorted it. They are now trying to pass it off as truth to people who will take it as such because they don't have the sense to know any better.

@@NotAnotherKuromi The Jim Crow laws would have made it impossible for blacks and whites to play baseball together. There was a Negro League for starters. Plus many of the players more than likely came out decades later. Lesbians would have been banned from playing in the League if they were found out.

I feel like a lot of people are really missing the point. This show isn't just a remake, it's showing a completely different perspective that the movie just couldn't show. I really love the movie, but I also love the show in a completely different way. From just the trailer it is clear that the story being told is a different one. It isn't laziness but an actual new take.

I'm on episode 6 ....what a great show!!!! I love being able to see the styles from that fabulous yet awful era of repression. It's amazing to see what women, women of color, queer women and men, women in a man's sport and occupation and working women in general had to go through during that time. When I was little my grandmother and great grandmother told me so many wonderful stories of their youth and younger years....I grew up on all the old movies that glamorized that time...I wish I got to learn about and see the truth of that time period. This series is doing a wonderful job!!!!!

This show is more historically accurate and narrows in on things the film wasn’t allowed to. Real remaining members had a part in the show as well as extensive research from letters, diaries etc. they include many aspects the women in the league didn’t get from the movie. Like the queer aspect. Around 35 percent of women in the league were queer as confirmed by members who has spoken out. Penny Gave a blessing for this before she died. She wasn’t allowed to tell everything like we can now. Rosie is in it too who was best friends with her and has confirmed they had to make the film more Herero. Have a great day

In 1993, CBS aired a series based on the movie. Six episodes of "A League of Their Own", the series, were produced but only 5 aired before the show was cancelled. The sixth episode has never been seen. Penny Marshall directed one of the episodes and Tom Hanks directed another one of the episodes. I wish those involved with this new series a lot of luck, but the original movie is definitely a hard act to follow.

Yep. Correct. At least, you're understanding that the producers are refusing fresh material. A lot of people love to say writers have no new ideas and are lazy. That is not true at all. The production companies / studios / streamers just want our fresh takes on existing material or to find books and comics to adapt. I think it has to do with so much competition with all the streamers out there; they believe to get people's attention, they must start off with something recognizable. It's quite sad for a lot of us sometimes. We have MANY new ideas. They are just like -- eh. Great sample, now let's adapt this old series or something. Now whether or not the adaptation / remake does the original justice is an entirely different thing, but yeah, you're clearly seeing what's happening out here. I, myself, am looking forward to this show, but yeah, this is what's happening right now.

As an actual Rockford native, I sincerely hope there’s some actual mention of the real Peaches and their impact not only in the area but in the rest of the nation. We actually have a lot of pictures of the Peaches archived at City Hall and I hope they do something with that, even if it’s just reenactment

The AAGPBL didn't allow non white players. Mamie Johnson, who was a partial inspiration for this show, was not allowed to play because she was black. And that was in 1951, well after the war ended, and this league started.

Penny Marshall's original A League Of Their Own is a classic and was among my favorite baseball movies I watched over and over as a kid in the 80s and 90s, along with Field of Dreams, Sandlot, Major League, The Natural, Angels in the Outfield, etc. It's rare that a remake of a classic film can compete with the original, and this one looks like a dud.

Whoever isn’t willing to give this series a chance because they’ve already seen the movie and “some things should never be remade”. This show takes a lot of inspiration from the movie, but it really is its own experience entirely. The way the show handles being LGBT or black (or both) in this time period is amazing and the writing is great. The actors put a lot of love into playing these characters. The characters aren’t tokenized and each member of the team that gets the spotlight is much more complex than is noticeable on the surface. I think if you were maybe hesitant to watch this show that you should definitely still give it a shot.

But at least it gives audiences a chance to learn (assuming the film is an accurate representation of the events, so it’s probably a good idea to double check with a quick google search or an analysis vid on RU-vid) about events they wouldn’t normally have a chance to know about. For example, if you never saw The Dish movie, you wouldn’t know that it was thanks to Australia that the rest of the world got to the footage of the moon landing

many things. this isn’t a remake or a sequel or an extension of the film; it is its own entity. one thing it will certainly explore more is the struggle of Black women during this time period, which the movie touched on but not nearly as much as it could have. love the movie to death but i’m open-minded about this. i’m getting pretty darn tired of folks judging an entire series based on a two-minute trailer. watch the show, then form an educated opinion.

It's not a remake though. This series will be based on the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League like the 1992 movie did however but with different characters than the 1992 movie. The 1992 movie btw also had a tv series that was based on the 1992 movie however lasted 6 episodes.

The issue with this series is it is historically incorrect, whereas the movie was based on accounts and historical docs from the members who played in the league. One African woman did attempt to play and they rejected her. She went on to a career in baseball just not in this league.

When I first watched this trailer, the comments were full of people complaining about this and I also read a comment about how unrealistic it is for including black women as they weren't part of the team. Now the comment section is filled with people who have actually watched the show and see why this series is so important. It does not disregard the fact that black women were not allowed in the women's league, it just tells the story of a black woman who was rejected alongside the stories of the white women on the team. It portrays the reality of queer women in sports instead of pretending like all of them were straight. Maybelle Blair, who was one of the inspirations for the original film, just came out as gay aged 95 in response to the series! And on top of it being important, the series is also very good!
