It sounds like the motor is struggling a bit sometimes, maybe use an L-motor

The control+/powered up wire clip pieces work with power functions and nxt/ev3. The days of looping wires around and holding them in place with axles are over!

I'm honestly kinda surprised that a single axle can support the entire weight of the unit, but I also don't really have a sense of how much those battery packs weigh.
