WHAT A COOL OPPORTUNITY! Huge thanks to Jenson USA and to Rocky Mountain for making this possible! Have a peep at the new Altitude C90 Rally Edition here at Jenson USA via my affiliate link: bit.ly/RockyMou...
Riding some new brands has been a HUGE highlight of 2020 (and we all know 2020 needs more positive highlights…) and this Rocky Mountain Altitude C90 was an absolute DREAM! I have never ridden a 29er with this much travel. Yes, my Ripmo has a 170 fork and before that, a massive Trust Shout, but the Ripmo is only about 145mm of frame travel. The new 2021 Altitude is a 160mm chassis, and is set up with a Fox 38 fork at 170 travel.
I threw on a few parts I’ve been riding for a while now:

Aside from the Seattle staples (Tiger, Duthie, Raging River, Tokul) I've heard really good things about a trail called Rat Pac out in Roslyn (right next to Cle Elum), there's also an old jump park at the bottom.

I saw Voice Over Trail Review guy's vid about Rat Pac, it looks rad! My daughter and I rode the other side of Teanaway while on that camp out mentioned in the vid, and it was hot AF! Super sandy dirt and crazy dry. I'd like to try Rat Pac and more at Teanaway, but I'll wait for fall! Taneum and Naches look to have some incredible and more backcountry stuff- hopefully I can head down tomorrow for more!

Man only after watching a bunch of Jeff's videos do I realize how much of a humble MTB beast you are! putting together those combos and ripping those trails so fast and flawlessly lol. I start to realize that I can do 2/10 maneuvers and you do alll while bombing down a trail.

Just my opinion/experience: Rocky Mountain had a recall this riding season for 2018-2020 ALUMINUM ONLY Instinct/Pipeline frames because the front triangle was prone to cracking under the head tube (low #number of cases). RM told owners of select models to stop riding the bikes in the middle of riding season and that they would replace front triangles at no cost. They also said they would have color matching front triangles to replace your existing frame in May. In August, they decided to cut costs and disregard customers needs/preferences and told us the only option for us is a MATTE GREY or BLACK replacement front triangle. It didn’t match my color scheme of the original bike or rear triangle. Rocky Mountain did not go above and beyond to satisfy their existing customers. Instead, they cut costs and rushed out frames that did not match the customers original purchase. I am a Rocky Mountain Instinct owner and I just want everyone to know that it’s a great bike I love riding it (Horst link feels amazing) but Rocky Mountain does not have the same customer oriented service like Santa Cruz, Ibis or other excellent customer focused brands. They knew their decisions were short-sighted which left a poor taste with several loyal customers. After this experience I decided I would choose another brand for my future purchase. I emailed Rocky Mountain about this but they send back automated courtesy emails. Just an FYI Sorry if I sound like a disgruntled customer.
@Will762

"After this experience I decided I would NOT choose another brand for my future purchase." Huh? Did you mean the opposite?
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 4 года назад
Hey JL, that sucks, sorry to hear that! While the bike should ride fine with the mismatch, I'm sure it sucks to look down and notice the swingarm is a different color. I'm glad that RM is honoring their customers through a recall, though, as I know plenty of other brands that would never issue a full on recall. These other brands would simply swap frames on a "per incident" basis. I have a hunch that a disproportionate number of Rocky bikes get ridden harder than some US brands, prompting that sort of recall decision. My hunch comes from the fact that I see these bikes so often at key Canadian riding destinations- places that are WAY gnarlier than anywhere in the states. Hopefully you can get your frame custom painted somewhere, I'm sure it's a great bike despite that color issue!!! Thanks for sharing your story.
@jltrack
@jltrack 4 года назад
Jeff Kendall-Weed Yeah for sure I am nitpicking, it’s just a little disappointing when you make an expensive bicycle purchase and a few months later, RM tells you, “Hey that nice color bike you chose, yeah we need that front triangle back, but hey we have this muted indistinct color frame to replace it.” I know it’s just color but I purchase bikes and ride them for at least 5 years. I just think new customers should hear about mine and several customers experience as a reference. There are so many bicycle brands to choose from and how RM handled the recent recall should be considered by future customers. Again this bike rides amazingly well and I think people should test them out especially since they aren’t very popular here in California. Also the recall was for Aluminum frames only. Not for Carbon frames. Their carbon frames are solid. Many customers don’t mind the color change others do. Just wish RM would listen or consider customers like me.
@jltrack
@jltrack 4 года назад
@@Will762 Sorry, I meant to say I am not buying another RM. I just bought my Instinct in March and I really liked the color. I know I'm nitpicking but it stinks when they said they would color match your frame then completely change their mind. I'm glad they care about the safety of their customers and issued a voluntary recall, but they also disregarded their existing customers choice. Its like buying a shiny red Porsche then them saying, "hey we need that car back we'll give you a matte black one instead." To some that may be okay but for others like me that purchased a bike for the whole package, it just stinks cause now I have a bleh looking biking for 5 years. It looks like one of those Chinese carbon frames you see selling on ebay or Alibaba....

I’ve just received my recalled Instinct BC 2019 back today and I’m super impressed. The Front triangle looks epic, the whole bike looks epic. I think its important to remember Rocky have done this recall voluntarily. I’m very pleased with the customer service they have given me. My local RM dealer here in the U.K ( Pauls Cycles ) also has a big part to play in this. I do think the Single colour front triangles will be good for people buying a 2nd hand bike... at least they will know its had the recall done 🤣.

Just got back from Washington, seeing family in Port Townsend. The nearest spot with decent tralls was Port Gamble. A network of od logging roads connected by some fun trails. I am sure it doesn't stack up to the trails in Bellingham, but being a SoCal guy who rides nothing but dry, lose jagged terrain...it was awesome! Shade, hero dirt, rooty and lush...had a blast at Port Gamble. Ranger and The Hood were the best trails I rode, fun times.

@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 4 года назад
Thank you Joel! Those are the Industry Nine Enduro 315 wheels. The hubs and spokes are made in Asheville, NC, and then they use the WR1 rims (built in Kamloops by Dustin from the Local Loam video) to complete the build. I've really liked them! The stiffer WR1 rims are great on the 29" bikes, and they've taken some good hits thus far with no issues. I don't like black spokes or hubs, where as silver will always look somewhat more "custom" IMO. I wish I would have specced these with 4x pink and 4x turquoise spokes per wheel in addition to the silver- maybe next year!!!

I have a 2019 Instinct BC carbon 90 with carbon wheels, bars and lighter saddle and WITH Stamp 11 pedals its 30 pounds even. I really think the 38 is more than 99.9 % of the riders need and just added weight. I realize the Rally is a smash over anything bike but still i think the 36 is sufficient however its a nice spec. and possibly useful for the RIGHT rider and for $9100.00 really shouldnt have to upgrade. I bought my bike in December 2020 as a leftover for $3700.00 so a great deal and also got a super deal on 2019 Mavic XA carbon wheels, category 3 not 4 but for my riding on blue trails excellent wheels and they have the new 40 tooth hub so quick engagement , once in a while i hit some rock gardens with no issues, probably upgrade to XX-1 or XO to drop another 300 or so grams from the GX when it says time to replace.

@@JeffKendallWeed definitely worth a look 👌 both are their perspective brand's EWS race bike. Worth a look in the kinematics, they'd be quite different, just looking over it by eye at the linkages the rocky will have a higher leverage ratio producing better small bump off the top but due to the position the shock will still have a decent amount of pedal bob in full open. And it will have a overall progressive curve with it slightly leveling out at the end. The Ibis however will jave higher anti squat numbers thanks the the dw link while still having a decent amount of small bump, it'll have minimal pedal bob in comparison and will require higher spring rates due to it's less progressive suspension design, however it will produce good support all throughout the travel but will lack bottom out resistance when compared to the rocky. I'm not 100% sure if what I've said is accurate but that's what I gather from just looking at the linkage. Would be interesting to see how much the 9 point system affects geometry and kinematics

@@JeffKendallWeed When I was trying the Slayer from a couple years ago the altitude had too steep a head angle for my liking on the Shore while the Slayer was nicely pushed out. Additionally I enjoy to run a softer suspension overall so having a few extra mm means I can get a softer suspension without blowing through it all too quick. Probably has a lot to do with riding style and trail choice. I hit a lot of chunder trails with 90deg roots and rock sections, while the new school way of riding is waaay more flow trails.

Ahhhh that'd be awesome! I LOVED that ride- such an easy yet still backcountry loop. I keep looking at the other side of the highway on trailforks, there is so much to ride. In fact, there's so much that I'm thinking I should just moto it first to get a feel for the trails, then head back on the MTB, but then I'd lose the adventure aspect of hitting it for the first time on an MTB!!!

@nosreuter

Congrats on getting that dream fulfilled 👌 Have a few questions if you have the time, no pressure, just really like your style of riding and your input would be greatly appreciated: 1. Trying to figure out why you want the bike more linear for riding trails/back-country. Since the bike has travel in abundance I would have assumed you wanted a more supportive mid-stroke and more poppieness when your not riding straight up enduro/DH. 2a. I have issues with pedal strikes riding my 140/140 YT Jeffsy 29 CF Pro -18. It runs 175mm carbon crancs stock and I've been hesitating to switch them out for shorter ones cause they're fancy and light (will only afford aluminum SLX or similar). This happens on flat nature trails with some roots and rocks were the trail demands pedaling to keep up the pace. I run the Fox DPS shock in "trail-mode" and alert from that my attempt at an solution have been to stiffen up the shock and make it more progressive. 2b. Is 170mm crancs enough to make a noticeable difference. I'm 6' and have legs on the slightly longer side of the spectrum (34,25"). Usually ride 12-24 miles on a ride. 3. Just want you to know that my 3,5 year old daughter LOVES the MacRide that I got inspired to get thanks to you. She can't stop shouting for more descents and giggles the whole way down 🙏
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 4 года назад
Thank you Simon!!! 1. Backcountry trails have much fewer big impacts than bike parks. The reason is speed and jumps. Backcountry stuff is rarely ever a drop of more than 4 feet. At the bike park you're sending 40+ foot jumps at 30+ MPH. When on the rougher, more natural trails, I need to use my suspension for traction more than anything else. 2. I'm 174cm and have always ridden 170 cranks, and finally went to 165s for this year. I'm loving the 165s! I experience no drawbacks. I spin a pretty quick cadence, and stand while pedaling too much. I. find that shorter cranks are better for this. I do wish I could go to a full 177 q factor like the ebikes have, but that's not an option. Try some 170mm SLX cranks and see how it goes- or better yet, try some 165s and commit to it. The actual studies found no legitimate loss of power with shorter cranks. Another factor would be tire choice. You can easily raise the BB with slightly bigger tires. 3. AWESOME! We use the MacRide daily, and it really has changed our lives for the better! Glad you are enjoying it too! I know there are cheaper options, but the MacRide is superior with it's easy on/off. Thanks again!

@@JeffKendallWeed Hats of Jeff, your truthfully a nice person, thanks for your in depth answer!! Already ride a 2,6" up front but only 2,35 in the rear, hesitant a bigger will fit without rubbing. Will try though, good idea! I also like pedaling standing on those rooty/rockie sections, gives such nice flow, until the pedalstrike comes.... If this experiment goes well then maybe I can get full use of my suspension making it more linear again as well!

How much sag on the fork and shock do you run? How many volume spacers? How much compression and rebound?
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 4 года назад
Hey Andrew, I'm using one volume spacer in the fork and one in the shock. I'm down around 74psi in the fork, something like 4 clicks of LSC and 5 clicks of HSC. I forget rebound. On the shock I run 195 psi, opened the low speed all I could, set the low rebound to be fast, and used minimal HSR and just enough HSC to not bottom in the parking lot. I believe that's 25% sag.

Awesome Video! Jeff, I wonder what your thoughts are on brands that offer Geometry tweaks on the fly with their frames? More companies seem to be offering it these days as you mentioned with RM. I know Guerrila Gravity offers this and they go even further by making the chainstays interchangeable so you can essentially change your frame to a different model at a minimal cost. I wonder if these options are an advantage or a disadvantage? Also, over time, does it impact the integrity of the frame? For example, if someone is constantly switching the GEO, etc..? I'm sure these companies put a lot of thought into it, but am very curious about the Pros and Cons.
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 4 года назад
Norbert thanks for the note! I wrote all about the adjustable geometry and my feelings on it here: jeffkendallweed.com/a-lifelong-bike-dream-came-true-thanks-to-a-great-sponsor/. In short, I'm a BIG fan of it! This bike is such a great example. Mike Kazimer of PinkBike got the same bike and is riding similar trails. He loved the slackest setting and wanted to go even slacker. Me, I wanted steeper, so I went to the neutral position. Boom. Two totally different riding styles, but we are happier with differing set ups. If I were to travel to a bike park, I'd be stoked to change my bike to better suit those drastically different trails. A lot of brands don't do adjustability because it adds cost and complexity to the bikes. In the end it matters more who you intended buyer is. For Rocky, they are much bigger in Canada than in the USA (from my experiences, no idea on actual sales). BC has so much gnarlier stuff than the rest of the whole world, it's literally impossible to make a bike that shines on the wild north shore, but then won't be overkill on the flatter trails in Ontario.

Alex, they have a complete version at $3500. That would be an amazing bike! Very similar in price to the Ripmo AF, but much more adjustable. I didn't even know Rocky was selling the bike as a frame only. No idea why the price is a few hundred more than an Ibis, but it could be related to a Canadian company needing to import bikes into Canada first then down to the USA.
