A-Line Los Angeles: Scariest Metro Line in the World? A Brit's Experience 🇬🇧🇺🇸

I took a ride from The Civic Center in Downtown LA to Downtown Long Beach. The route took me through Watts, Compton and other 'hoods' that, when I was growing up in the 90's, had serious reputations of gang violence, race riots, poverty hardship and some of the best rappers the West Coast has produced.
This is the land of NWA, Suge Knight, Rodney King, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lemar and the Williams sisters. In LA (and many parts of the US) there is a stigma against public transport amongst many people. Some say it is for poor people only, that it's impractical, dirty and dangerous. Let's go and find out

Been riding the LA Metro for over 20 years, I can confidently say that it's never been better. While there may still be room for improvement, many of the issues we face aren't necessarily due to shortcomings in the metro system itself, but rather stem from broader economic and societal problems that need to be addressed. And remember: unhoused individuals often congregate in major cities like Los Angeles because they are drawn by the same factors that attract everyone else: more opportunities.

Yes, well said. I noticed the improvements too when I rode several lines on 5-16-24 including the B and D lines. The rides were free on the LA Metro on this day to commemorate Bike to Work day, but didn't see any more bikes than normal. Used the opportunity to have some pastrami at Langers. It had been a minute since I was last there. Delicious as always.

@ES-hr6vg Месяц назад
What does this comment even mean? Never better? You can’t gloss over the safety issue on trains just because the network is expanding. Safety and rider experience have regressed significantly over the last 5 years and you know it. I am a regular rider on the E Line and it was a whole different experience 5+ years ago. Now, it’s a camp for the homeless. Have you not seen the videos of what the police and sheriffs have to deal with when the trains arrive in Santa Monica? Metro does a terrible job of enforcing fares and they are doing a feeble job of getting these people off of trains. What good does it do to just let them ride all the way to Santa Monica before you kick them off? It just disproportionately heaps the burden of dealing with these people on the city of Santa Monica.

I got off next stop and went back to look for dude but I guess he woke up.

@@MattBianco-rv8meI haven't ridden an LA Metro bus in decades, but it seems the latest crimes being reported on LA Metro, since Covid happened, have more to do with mentally ill homeless people. More officers or security guards need to be on the trains or buses. At least, on the lines that have the most violence.

I grew up riding these lines when I was a kid and used to go to Dodger games. In the 90s, they felt a lot safer, or maybe I was just naive back then. For additional context, I used to work in downtown Long Beach as a security director. It was not uncommon for LAPD to give the more troublesome homeless of Skid Row an ultimatum: get on the "Blue Line" and get off at the last stop or go to jail. Once in Long Beach, the local homeless would violently defend their area, causing the transient homeless to become more desperate and violent. This led to them trying to seek shelter inside the hotels I worked at. By that time, they had been harassed by LAPD, the gangs on the metro, and the homeless in Long Beach. Needless to say, this caused a lot of people with nothing to lose to lash out. Treating them with empathy and respect is the only reason why I survived that role.

I was on the Montreal metro earlier this week when three (out of four in total) lines were shut down because of an “incident majeur”. We followed directions to leave the train, but the vast majority of us refused to leave the platform when asked because we wanted to be first in line when the trains started running again. This happens a lot. We know the drill. And the three or four STM security staff knew better than to mess with a few hundred stubborn passengers. It turned out that there was a fight on the platform at the station where the three lines cross and someone was attacked with cayenne pepper. At least it wasn’t a suicide, or an overdose, or some idiot trying to retrieve a phone they dropped on the tracks. I take the metro all the time, and have ridden public transit in other places for years. It’s totally safe if you keep your distance from anyone or anything you deem unusual.

The LA Metro is fine. He says as much at the end of the video. Remember, the title and purpose of the video. It's obviously not the most dangerous line in the world based on what he showed in the video. Abd, relatively speaking, this is probably the worst line in LA Metro. It's also the oldest of all the lines. It opened in 1990. That was the beginning of the modern LA Metro of today.

the A Line ... Most Angelinos still refer to it as the "Blue Line" original route was from 7th/Metro Center to Long Beach. Since Metro has exteneed this line to Pasadena and Azusa, some of the riff-raff migrated out. When I used to live in LA, I didnt ride it that much because of all the riff-raff that goes on the train day-n-night. The safest option would be to take the Metro Bus J- Silver Line Pacific Coast Hwy Station and then the Metro Bus 232 to Downtown LB

Still recall this, had my dad over from Australia and we took the then called Blue line, never seen dad's face look like that ever.. And there's people in these comments defending the Metro and saying it's fine 🤦‍♂️
@mrxman581
@mrxman581 2 месяца назад
@no_soy_rubio It isn't a matter of defending Metro, it's about looking at it objectively. Yes, it was horrible that the woman was killed by the mentally ill homeless person. She was on the B Line around 5:30 am when there are a lot less people around, and this horrible person took advantage of that and killed her. They caught about a mile from the North Hollywood station. Apparently, he was well known to the regular riders and that helped to get him caught. LA Metro is a transit agency. It's not a social service agency or police department. I would say 90% of the crime on Metro that has received a lot of attention in the last three weeks was caused by mentally ill homeless. Having even more police from the recent increase from several months ago is just a bandaid. And even if you scare them off of the LA Metro, where do you think they're going? As long as the city and county social services agencies continue to treat these people with kid gloves it will take even longer to better deal with the mentally ill homeless situation. These people are incapable of making sound decisions for themselves. They need to be obligated to get the treatment they need. They're homeless because they're mentally ill or suffer from substance abuse or both. People shouldn't expect LA Metro to fix it.

Noise cancelling headphones are now mandatory for all public places, airliners, restaurants especially. I used to ride the Metro Rail system (mostly the former Gold and Red lines) to school, and ride the other lines from time to time. I got desensitized to the screamers pretty quickly. It's unfortunate that the US can have these very classist attitudes towards public transportation. It's something that stereotypically, you only ride if you are poor, homeless, or without a driver's license. I'm pretty sure people think I have a DUI charge when I ride the metro. Governments would also rather pour more money into building more highways than maintaining the trains. Those of us who enjoy trains seem to be in the minority. Violent attacks on the Metro are uncommon, but they happen. And because someone being stabbed on the subway is a more shocking occurrence than your average lethal car crash, that scares even more people from getting onboard, meaning less funding for security guards and even more violence. People just get on the B (old Red) line without paying fares, and no one seems to get fined or sentenced to community service. You're not supposed to play loud music over speakers on the Metro... that one doesn't seem to be enforced much either. I don't even dislike a lot of the selections people play over the speakers, but still... just wear headphones. The 1980s boombox craze is alive and well on the Metro. The LA Metro is very much hit and miss when it comes to safety, comfort, etc.
@no_soy_rubio
@no_soy_rubio 24 дня назад
Great comment and I totally agree, there does seem to be a stigma around public transport in the US! It's a legacy of the automobile companies buying out and systematically destroying the existing transport system in LA and other US cities.

The "A" line goes through the poorest and most derelict areas of Los Angeles. It was specifically built there because those neighborhoods had horrific public transit that limited the people living in them from ever getting out. And now, there are also homeless people with mental health problems who take the trains a lot. Blame the Republican (our version of "Tory" for it happening. They gutted mental health funding, eliminated construction of low income housing, gutted the public education system, etc. Add 400 years of very racist history to it, and that is why your ride was so "different" from where you're from. In LA, only poor people use public transit.
