'A Little Deep Sleep - a Family Guide to Anaesthetics' aims to ease anxieties that children may have about coming to the hospital for an operation under general anaesthetic, giving kids a clear idea about what might happen during a family's hospital visit for their paediatric surgery. The film takes the family and child on a journey from coming to the hospital, going to the operating theatre, to waking up in recovery after surgery and going home.
Watch our film 'Numb and Numb-er' if you are going for a local anaesthetic or trying to decide between general and local anaesthetic for a small operation.
About general anaesthetics:
Before coming to the hospital, doctors and health care professionals will explain what you need to do. Usually you are not allowed to eat for six hours or to drink anything but water for up to two hours before surgery.
On the ward, children will meet the nurse who will measure you and weight you and put magic cream (local anaesthetic cream) on your hand. This cream numbs the area.
Your anaesthetist will visit to discuss how you go to sleep and surgeon will visit to talk with you about your operation.
A parent or carer can often come in with you while you have your anaesthetic. Anaesthetic is given either through a mask (anaesthetic gas smells a bit like felt tip pens), or medicine in injected through a vein in your hand (your arm might tingle a little).
Children will usually fall asleep/become unconscious quite quickly. The parent or carer will leave the room while you go into theatre for your operation.
While you are asleep the anaesthetist will monitor your breath, blood pressure, pulse and look at how much oxygen is in your body. They will be with you throughout the operation to keep you safely anaesthetised until your operation is finished.
You will wake up in the recovery ward with a nurse, who is looking after you. You might feel a bit confused when you wake up. You parent/carer will be called to come and see you when you are ready, they will take you back to the ward.
After you have rested a bit longer and been checked on by your anaesthetist and your doctor, you can have some food and drink.
The doctors and nurses will give your carers advice on any medicines you need to take or any aftercare from your surgery before you go home.
