I read you the wonderful opening pages of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows If you like, you can encourage me with coffee and cake here www.buymeacoff...
I feel that these videos are a modern day wind in the willows for me. Observing Malcom’s passion for great writing and the joy he gets from sitting in that wonderful chair surrounded by carefully curated books sipping a delicious beverage and enjoying his pipe is something that gives me comfort and makes me smile
“There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven't yet met.” I somehow have never heard of you before, Mr. Guite, but I’m suddenly quite smitten. I believe you are one of my unmet, dear friends Yeats speaks of. I look forward to our future together.
I think that the chapter title: 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn', is the most evocative title ever. The book brings back happy memories of when I first read this some fifty years ago.
Thank you, you’ve put into wonderful words some of my feelings. I have felt the first stirrings of spring and remembered Ratty’s whiskers twitching with excitement! Hang spring cleaning and spend more time outside or listening to Malcolm Guite!
Out of my busy days, these 10 minute videos with you slow me down and help me enjoy a bit of the day, even while I’m working out. While I may bot get to enjoy a pipe and pint with you all the time, I live a bit vicariously through you.
Another wonderful video, thank you Malcolm. I adore the Cosgrove Hall stop motion series of Wind in the Willows from back in the 80s, and one of your previous Wind in the Willows videos that I watched recently, made me wonder why I had never bought the illustrated book.... so I remedied that last week, and since then I have spent some time reading it whilst smoking some St. Bruno flake in my latest Peterson.
Cosgrove Hall production remains a cherished treasure. Always enjoy Sir Michael Hordern, for as Badger is also the voice of Gandalf from the BBC series. Spring hasn’t had its chance here yet. Winter keeps hanging on. For a warm spring day in this Easter season for a pipe. Sigh.
Sitting on my patio in North Carolina USA. Smoking my beloved Peterson Heritage 307 with Peterson Elizabethan Mixture, when this popped up. It's a pleasure to be Smoking along with you while watching your videos.
I've never been a fan of reading, but as I age, I fear that my mind is becoming more dull with today's vocabulary and the mindless things that we do. This makes me want to pick up reading for the first time in my life and try something new :)
Im from ireland, my grandmother is from Kent, she read me the books when i was a child, great old hard backs, im not sure how many volumes, but a cup of hot coco and a story before bed.
For this the internet gets a thank you. How else could I be welcomed into this mans study and treated to his enthraling readings and on point musings. Malcolm here could read the phone book and keep my attention!
From the heartland of the US in the State of Nebraska here. Just wanted you to know that this is my favorite channel by far. You’ve single handedly made me buy a proper tobacco pipe and read more books in my time off. Thank You beyond words. This channel and you yourself are a gift, kind sir.
Imbolc/ stirring in the belly indeed. The first stirrings of spring bring so much nostalgia ,the opening of minds ,and the closing of another season , leaving the cobwebs , coming into the sunshine to lay its warmth on a favorite passage ,as I nestle my back against another new tree , leaning in , together , we hear the musings of The Wind In The Willows once more.
It's funny I'm real strict what I ket my kids watch on your tube ad even tho you smoke pipe and occasionally have a spirit or ale. You're an approved channel. You're just such a wonderful content creator, and the fact you read such worldly and wonderful things is just so amazing, and I am so glad I found your channel. Who would have thought randomly looking for a video about pipe smoking? I would discover this place. Thank you again for all your content
Thanks, I certainly hope my channel is family friendly, though sometimes, if the pipe smoking is too prominent youtube seems to put restrictions on them!
This is great. Afternoon with the Wind in the Willows. A nice pipe of Caribbean Blue Drake a nice rocks glass of Glenlivet 12 and roasted Bree on toast. Thank you Malcolm!!😅
Thank you Malcolm for rekindling my interest in great literature. It is a pleasure as I sit this evening with a pipe (I also enjoy Cult Blood Red Moon immensely), a glass, and the sundown to hear you read the introduction to a book which I’ve not yet taken the time to read. This I will change soon. Thank you for taking the time to read aloud such lovely snippets of the classics so that they should not be forgotten. In my digital daily job your reading has made all the difference in the world. Most best regards, or cheers as I believe you might say.
I've just bought a beautiful new copy of this enchanting book, to replace my tiny little paperback. Because I'm big now and I can! It's such an exciting beginning, moley rushing outside into the warm enveloping Spring day. I love it, and you read it beautifully.
This charming story of lovable, larger-than-life characters will please all the family. This is a delightful woodland romp, with many of the best scenes featuring a roly-poly toad.
Thank you for this joyful reading. It is a beautiful Spring morning and I am making coffee in my kitchen. Suddenly I now have a mind to take the coffee outside, and sit on our porch, absorbing all of its glory. Thank you.
That was wonderful, Malcolm. If anyone is interested, the former Dean of Canterbury, Rev. Robert Willis, read the whole "Wind in the Willows" and several other books and short stories on RU-vid. They're easy to find.
Oh it was written for young and old alike, I read it often and there is much wisdom therein which only occurs to you in later years. We have a real treasure trove of children's literature going back over the years, indeed centuries, and my bookshelves are constantly being added to with charity and shop finds. I particularly like the chapter in Wind in the Willows where Mole and Ratty find Badgers home in the woods, i think i am like Mr Badger....Also Ernest Shepherd's drawings are marvellous in this and of course Winnie the Pooh. ☺️
Was working at a used bookstore and happened to rescue a copy from the recycle can! Never read it before but it quickly became one of my favorites. Even heard a sermon in seminary where the president of our university read a passage from the Piper at the Gates of Dawn, relating it to when Moses met with the LORD on Mt. Sinai. Fantastic.
If only you could spend more time on Kenneth Grahame and the wind in the Willows, it would make my year. God bless as always your content is great and much appreciated.
Listening to you read a few pages of this book was so sweet. I read this book to my boys when they were little and it’s a wonderful memory of ours. Heck, I think we will read it together again. Sweet Spring!
Hi Malcolm. I currently live in Mexico and had to leave many of my favorite books back in Yorkshire. I have my pipe and my kindle still here but it isn't quite the same. Many thanks for reading and enjoying a pipe with us!
Just astonishingly welcome and thank you for your explanation of Adnam's Broadside. A fine bottle which I regularly enjoy. I was inspired to dust off my old pewter tankard which was an 18th birthday present from my lovely Nan, Queenie. Some years ago now!
"Good Morning"😊Thank you for the videos. Watching them has got me into smoking a pipe. I love every second of peace it brings and its a nice addition while I watch "Lord of the Rings".
My sister (an actress and a clown in life) and I loved Wind in the Willows. We found that A.A. Milne had written a play in homage, Toad of Toad Hall, which is funny and full of shenanigans. Thank you for the glimpse back through time!
“You can never get a cup of tea large enough for me to enjoy all the Spell in the Library videos.” 😉 I only discovered WitW a few years ago, but it instantly became a favorite. Probably the best part is the Piper at the Gates of Dawn chapter. I know it’s a pagan character and Grahame likely wasn’t a believer, but I get a real sense of the divine when I read it, like Pan is only a stand-in for Christ. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the book’s original title, changed shortly before publication to avoid similarity to a Yeats collection, was _The Wind in the Reeds._
I hadn’t read this since childhood and am currently rereading it prior to sharing it with a young friend. I’m just over halfway and the rich vocabulary surprised me. I remembered only a few scenes. Superb work.
Wonderful book. If a person asks me, it's probably the first that springs to mind. Gave me great peace when I first read it. I'm very glad to have a copy and will pick the time to read it again
Hi malcolm, I came across your channel by chance thought it looked interesting so had a listen, I really enjoyed your poetry and the spell in the library, so I went back to your first video and watched them all ,I have finally caught up and just watched your latest video I love how someone knocks on door as if it's me coming to see you and the warm welcome I get, after watching all you videos i really feel as if I am visiting an old friend , i even thought about getting a pipe, but the wife said no , never mind , so thank you malcolm for taking the time in you busy schedule to do these spells in the library its really opened up my mind to poetry, thank you.
You have been a huge encouragement in my journey as of late. I have found myself expanding and exploring my current library and reading lore than I ever have since finding your channel!! I have also expanded my pipe and tobacco collection as well 😂
Like many others, I recently found your channel thanks to the algorithm. After watching many of your videos I now find myself with several new tobacco pipes and a box set of the hobbit and lord of the rings. So far I have finished the hobbit and am almost through the fellowship of the ring. Thank you for the great content and for the new hobby of blowing smoke rings from my pipe.
I'm going to have a grandson in 6 months and I finished my personal study with my personal favorites and some of our most precious books that's been given to us by gifted writers , I'm so excited to hopefully see the excitement in his eyes when he discovers all the characters in middle earth
Nothing like losing yourself in a world of literature and poetry, while sipping on a good ale and puffing on some fine tobacco. Simple and royal comforts.
I’ve recently subscribed to your channel, and clad that I did. I would often daze out of the English classroom window across the woods and open lands and enter a thoughtful adventure. This wasn’t because of what my English teacher was saying,it was because I was bored. My point is, I believe if you were my teacher I know I would have developed a greater understanding and interest in English. You are an absolute delight to listen to and watch. Thank you.
