when I saw this, she had the entire audience in the palm of her hand. after she finished the song I realized I'd been holding my breath the whole time. her much debated singing prowess(at least in these comments. i love her voice) was rendered completely irrelevant. masterful storytelling and an incredibly moving performance! she is a living legend!

I can't believe I saw this 7 years ago. Elaine was so amazing. Such a talented star, may she Rest In Peace

I saw this a few weeks ago, and I honestly think that Elaine's interpretation of the role was to be appreciated. At times, I would agree she killed a line and sold it for laughs, but for the most part, the humor she brought was balanced by a sort of raw venerability that worked perfectly for the role. If only she would stop ending Liaisons with a snore...

"... is figs, no, not even figs, raisins! ah liasons" it's not meant to be a comedic line, only Elaine Stritch has the ability to make it funny. amazing ❤️

I have always laughed at that line, regardless of the performer. I think it was intentionally comedic. It's a brilliant rhyme of Sondheim.

I saw this production on their (hers and Bernadette's) 4th night in these roles. While Elaine did struggle with some lines, she was spot on with her delivery. Yes, her interpretation is quite different from Angela's, but I can't imagine that Sondheim is bothered all that much by it. After all, he wrote her role in "Company" specifically for her. I attended a lecture of his, back in April, and he had nothing but great things to say of her and the uniqueness she brings to her roles.

Despite an unpromising opening night (posted elsewhere on youtube), Ms. Stritch's performance blew me away. Her delivery of the story of the Croatian count (not shown here) packed a punch like no other Mme A I have EVER seen. She lets us feel the memory, long-suppressed, of the man who might have been the love of her life, and it hurts. Her "Liaisons" also is richly shaded. At the same time, though, she often undercuts her performance with mugging, leering, a loud snore. Gotta love her.

@jrny10011 I saw her, too--and she elevated the character's tragedy in a way like I'd never seen. She absolutely changed my view of the show--despite some hammy mugging--and convinced me that the contrast with Desiree's story is intended and necessary. BRAVA, Elaine!!

I saw the show tonight and she spoke the entire thing... I mean ENTIRE thing this clip is 100% more singing than we got this eve and yet I was ok with it. Im pretty sure she forgot her words at one point and it was fed to her but either way I witnessed a legend create.

Elaine is so fantastic at everything. I remember when she was Rudy Huxtible's teacher on The Cosby Show. Who remembers that?

absolutely brilliant. I saw this a week before it closed, Stritch and Peters put on the best show I have ever seen on a stage. Each of them embodied the characters so completely. Regina Resnick's version does have a certain quality that Stritch can't recreate, because she can't possibly sing it at her age, but the character is a witty old woman whose voice is probably not what it used to be, and Stritch's interpretation is spot on.

Just saw this, and loved both Elaine and Bernadette. Let's be clear on one thing, tho: Elaine is not playing Mme. Armfeldt. She's playing Elaine Stritch. And it's wonderful. You don't believe for a second that she's an aging aristocratic courtesan - It's ES all the way but we love her, and she has so much fun with the role (she milks every laugh for all it's worth) that she's a joy to watch. See it!

Elaine may be more Elaine than Madame Armfeldt, but she remembered every single word of every single line and never delivered them without 100% belief and authenticity as an actress. During "Liaisons" you are thinking about what she's singing about - what more to a musical number is there than that? With Bernadette and Elaine and such an amazing cast, this is an unforgettable production and demands to be seen by anyone who loves great musical theatre.

It's a different interpretation of this great song and a good effort. But I have to say that I found the performance of Regina Resnik in this role (see RU-vid clip) to be hard to beat. But they are all enjoyable in their way! It's also great to have Sondheim back on Braodway.

Interestingly all 4 majors actresses who did this role had a different take on It, all of which were equally valid: Gingold (the originator of the role in the 70's and for those who are not sure who she is, the actress who played the grandmother in Gigi - another role of old courtisane) very much the wise matriarch; Resnick (an opera singer but with formidable stage presence) regretting the times past, including the lust of it; Lansbury (which I saw live) sorrowful, full of regrets but whil

@sicetergo I saw her do this last Saturday -- She flubbed up a few words, but it was a great interpretation.
@Richiesutherland
@Richiesutherland 14 лет назад
Gingold was still the best of all the ones I've seen, because she had it all--she was elegant, aristocratic (which Stritch absolutely isn't at all), dotty, faded, a gorgon, you name it. And HER version of the story of the Count who gave her a wooden ring still brings tears to my eyes--because you expected another big zinger and what you got was the realization that she had made a dreadful error of judgment. Didn't like Stritch that much because, as always, she plays herself.

Thanks for posting this. I saw it with her and Peters and also saw it with the original cast of Angela lansbury and Catherine Zeta Jones. Bernedette and Elaine were so much better. It's too bad they were the replacement cast and weren't eligible for a Tony nomination and didn't do the soundtrack

I like Strich, but the ultimate version of this song is done by Regina Resnick. You can tell in Miss Resnick's version why her character was a successful courtesan by the sophisticated, very musical and dreamlike aura she gives in her vocalization. Her version is sublime and not bawdy. Here the vocalization is quite crass and crusty. Most versions of this song have raspy cracked vocals.

@baribearsd Yes, don't let any kind of 'acting' get in the way. It must only be performed ONE way, no room for creativity!
@noahsdad61
@noahsdad61 14 лет назад
@encore28 Absolutely--the performance was a mix of the sublime--and, with the snore--the ridiculous. While I think she conveyed the character's tragedy like no other (I've seen 9 versions), she'd then undercut her own performance with a snore, a guffaw, a grimace, or a grin. I think there's a word for this mixture of high and low in the same performance. Overall, she was quite powerful, but could have been even more so.
@ericholck3914

Agree 100%. I loved Stritch, but I think she struggled to rein in her desire to go "big" in everything she did. She knew people loved her for her outsized personality, and I think she felt she had to deliver that. For me, that's why her performance in "A Delicate Balance" was such a welcome surprise... she was noticeably restrained, and resisted the urge to make her performance overly hammy or mannered. I'm not sure even she realized that she could be just as (if not more) impactful without the shtick... I wish she had allowed us to see THAT Elaine more often.

Elaine and Bernadette were amazing in this. I saw it with Angela Lansbery and Catherine Zeta Jones and when I found out these two were the replacements I had to see it a second time. Both performers were a lot better than their precessors. I wish they would have released the cast recording with Stritch and Peters instead of Lansbury and Zeta-Jones

It's a little... Dry? I hate to say that, but in all honesty Angela's rendition had a bit more energy and dynamic. Just because Madame Armfeldt is an old woman doesn't mean she has to be lifeless as a statue. Personally I think Angela Lansbury did right by portraying her as one of those bitter old grandma types that their daughters secretly wish would just die already...haha. Just a preference though.

@brianeduardo1234 If you think this is about "winning" and "one-upmanship", then that is truly unfortunate. When did this degenerate into a Lansbury vs. Stritch competition? That seems a little childish. I compared Stritch to all those who came before her. Besides, two-minute clips do not do justice to a full performance. I trust you have seen both of them live.

@brianeduardo1234

have to disagree,Kaseimartin, but your are entitled to your view of course. Ms. Stritch is the mistress of timing and can sell a song even though she would admit she is no great singer have looked at Angela Lansbury doing the same song and there is no comparison. Ms. Stritch wins by a country mile.
@AtLastOnTheGround

Elaine was infinitely better than Lansbury. Don't get me wrong, I love Lansbury, but she just didn't grasp the part. Elaine's Armfeldt was wonderful -- almost perfection.

Sorry to say this, but Elaine lacks the elegance that the role requires. Angela definitely could pull that off. And there's also the fact that Elaine can't sing. Not anymore. She smoked and drank her vocal chords to death years ago.

Good grief this song will take forever, if she sings it like that. Awful.
@baribearsd
@baribearsd 14 лет назад
I only refer to the HUGE difference between interpretation and completely changing timing/notes/lyrics/lines. The playwright, composer and the lyricist should NEVER be second guessed by either a director or a performer. Theater is NOT Hollywood. Ms. Strich's complete disregard for the music(as written) as well as the book is inexcusable. She should be removed from the role.
@Kaseimartin
@Kaseimartin 12 лет назад
Just because it's Elaine Stritch does not excuse this performance. This is lazy, turgid, and, because she refuses to "act" and just be "Elaine Stritch", decidedly one-note, shallow, self-serving, and only of interest to her fans. It seems like she never ended her one-woman show. Lansbury, Resnick, and Gingold at least added depth, character, nuance, and actual skill. This is pointless. Unfortunately, Stritch has devolved into a caricature of herself. It happens to most strong personalities.
@baribearsd
@baribearsd 14 лет назад
I am a Director and must admit that I HATE it when performers, no matter how big, feel they have the ability and right to put their own "spin" on a song. Where is their respect for the composer? Hacks!
@athenaizawesome
@athenaizawesome 6 лет назад
Drew Messmann you must not be a very good “director” if your view is this limited. The theatre is all about “spin” and the day that performers, directors, and authors stop putting “spin” onto things will be the day theatre dies. We create new life and new possibility and new views through shows. Elaine looked at the character and gave the audience what she saw. Just as Angela Lansbury did, and just as many many women have done decades before them playing that role. Elaine Stritch had nothing but respect for Sondheim and I’m sure her portrayal had his stamp of approval. Just because you didn’t care for the performance doesn’t mean it was “wrong” or that it somehow defies the centuries old traditions of the theatre. Art is about moving forward.
