I love all of these so much for different reasons Angela Lansbury originated the role so obviously she's amazing. her mrs Lovett is very funny and scatterbrained and almost child like Patti Lupone and the guy who plays Todd have much good chemistry together and it seems darker but still a really funny show the movie version took out all of the funny parts and made it super dark which I also really love

Well, Sondheim himself played a big part in the making of the movie and he didn't want it to seem too theatrical so he wanted the actors to keep it as simple as possible.

Keep in mind when you're on stage you have to do everything large because if you don't people aren't going to see you but in a movie every little detail gets picked up so its understandable as to why they're a lot calmer in the movie. In the movie Burton was going for more of a calm, dead inside kind of appeal. Because that's just Tim Burton's style, calm, dark, yet sinister. If they were laughing and making jokes it just wouldn't seem like it belonged to Tim Burton.
@Ayden_B

"Definitive Sweeney"? By whose standard? Nonsense. Cariou was much better.
@johnbode5528
@johnbode5528 4 года назад
@@richardmayora1289 I've been listening to the original Broadway cast recording lately and...I can't agree. Of course, by just listening you're missing half of the performance, but Cariou's Sweeney just feels too subdued (although still miles better than Depp). For example, Hearn's raw and powerful "AT LAST MY ARM IS COMPLETE AGAIN" at the end of "My Friends" complements the huge musical crescendo leading up to it so much better than Cariou's quieter reading. Same with "Epiphany" - I think Hearn's more manic reading fits the material better. I also think Hearn and Lansbury made a better pairing than Cariou and Lansbury. No, to me Hearn is Sweeney, just barely keeping all that rage contained. My biggest issue with the movie is that it's a _musical_ , dammit, cast people who can freaking _sing_ . Depp and Bonham-Carter sing like "oh, yeah, that's right, this is a musical, we need to put these lines to some kind of a melody, I guess." Just ... _flaccid_ , boring. There's subdued, and then there's stoned.
@richardmayora1289
@richardmayora1289 4 года назад
@@johnbode5528 It sounds as though you did not actually SEE Cariou. I saw both...Several times. Hearn overacts and unfortunately sings like he's in a 1930s opera with that over the top style which compromises the acting. Hearn is also a ham. Cariou seethed and had many more layers.
@mzmiller52
@mzmiller52 4 года назад
Lansbury and caribou are the definitive version. Saw it the day the bridge came down. They had to bring the lights up and move it. Lupone was lupone, but she was with cervaris who helped, but nowhere near Hal prince’s staging. He was a genius.
@ethanpearson2160
@ethanpearson2160 4 года назад
mzmiller52 As a seventeen year old it’s kind of hard to imagine how Cariou would have performed but thankfully the national tour cast was recorded and we have plenty of Hearn to see. It’s truly a tragedy that there’s no official recording of Cariou. But we can all agree that Lansbury was the best Lovett.

I don't know why a lot of people don't like the movie version but I love it. I am a huge fan of Tim Burton films and the film I fell in love with. I personally like that the characters are more calm, it shows that while they are going bat shit crazy they are still human and damaged humans at that. While Helena might have been a little too calm and flat I think Johnny Depp's performance was pretty great.

1: They cut The Ballad of Sweeney Todd. I get why they did it, but the cut doesn't work for me one bit, particularly when they cannibalize one of the lyrics--"He'd seen how civilized men behave; he never forgot and he never forgave"--for the print advertisements--"Never forget. Never forgive." 2: This is just a personal issue, but Johnny Depp is one of the handful of actors I simply cannot watch without cringing. I'm sure he's a great guy, is kind to animals, and helps little old ladies across the street, but I just haven't been able to stand the man in anything I've seen him in.
@cannibalisticrequiem
@cannibalisticrequiem 7 лет назад
Sabrina Deitrick 1) They cut the Ballad of Sweeney Todd, and all following reprises. Yeah, they were cut for time, but what it loses, is that this story is meant to be a cautionary tale, like Aesop's Fables. You shouldn't let revenge consume you, because it could literally kill you. You take that out, and it feels like a bad horror flick that someone decided to put songs in to. 2) Carter and Depp are terrible singers. Sure, they may have gotten brief vocal lessons, but they just fall flat in comparison to George Hearn, Patti LuPone, Angela Landsbury, Len Cariou, Bryn Terfel, or hell, even Emma Thompson. And Alan Rickman doesn't fare any better either. 3) Carter and Depp's subdued acting. Subdued is putting it nicely, they behave as though they just popped a bunch of Valium, and overall their performances feel very phoned in. Todd and Lovett are meant to be unhinged characters from the start, they're supposed to be loud, bonkers, *not* sedate and boring! The only time I've seen a reserved Todd done well, was Michael Cerveris in the 2005 revival. His Todd was quiet, but he had those bursts of aggression that made you believe he was courting a more violent, sinister side underneath the surface. Depp is just boring. He never seems to emote much, and like Carter, he just kinda seems to float from scene to scene, not offering much. Not just that, but as opposed to the movie, the stageplays all seem to understand the tongue-in-cheek nature of the play. It's about an unhinged barber, his senile landlady/partner in crime, slaughtering people and baking them into pies (hell, the extended lyrics of A Little Priest are meant to be ridiculous and funny, "How bout Rear Admiral?" "No no, too salty!"). Sure it has some unsettling moments, but you're meant to laugh too. With the movie? Nope! We gotta be serious and edgy ALL THE TIME, otherwise no one will take us seriosly! Take us seriously damn it, we're scary! It's like Tim Burton forgot dark comedy was a legitimate concept, and went head on into seriousness, no one can be funny ever!

Stage and film are very different mediums. Movie actors don't have to project to the cheap seats. The camera is their audience. If you want to see what happens when the adjustment isn't made, watch the movie version of The Producers. Sweeney Todd is Tim Burtons finest film and his choice of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter for the leads was a good one.

Lansbury hands down. Period. Full Stop. Look at the musicalily, the nuances and slight comic pauses. She gets every drop our of this wonderful number that she possibly can. Lupone is always Lupone first and Bonham Carter is as interesting as roadkill.

Patti and Helena's are my favorites I don't know why people hate the movie version.

Because for some people that saw the original play, the movie is too serious. Well, It's Tim Burton. I like both versions.

The movie is very flat. Bonham-Carter and Depp make choices which was way too small. She is downright boring and the film lacks suspense. They should never have cut Kiss Me which adds a lot of tension. The juvenile leads were boring and on stage, they were very compelling.

Imelda Staunton's Mrs. Lovett and Michael Ball's Sweeney Todd are a dangerous combination of quick wit and charm but creepiness at the same time: (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ryF2rt0hQiM.html). They are my definitely favorite! :D

Mrs Lansbury’s all the way! Zany, demented and odd! Mrs Lupone’s is too... “singy” in my opinion, if that makes sense... too virtuoso for the part. Mrs Bonham Carter’s version is too meek for my taste...

No, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter aren´t trained singers. BUT in my opinion they both have nice, emotional voices which are very pleasant to listen to. It´s my favorite version of Sweeney Todd 🖤

as much as i love angela and helen, angela’s lovett is a bit too comical for my taste and helen’s is a bit too serious. patti’s is a perfect mix of both. edit: i also understand that angela often has more comical roles (ruth from pirates of penzance, mrs potts from beauty and the beast, etc.) and that the movie naturally wouldn’t have to be as dramatic as the plays, with the benefit of editing magic. i love all of their versions, but i don’t think anyone could top patti’s version in my opinion. they’re all incredible in their own ways! i really love this musical 💞

That's because the movie cut out the middle of the song. It's a shame because it's one of the best songs in the musical

Where does one find the 1983 version on it's own? Will purchase if it's no where else.

I love this! but it would have been better if you replaced the movie parts with Emma Thompson Sweeney Todd performance.

In Angela Lansbury’s voice all I can hear is the teapot from the original beauty and the beast.
