About "Mail Day":
-
“Mail Day” showcases the brand new Virtuoso Moments series… through the capturing of the raw and communal moment shared between all Cardists -
When new cards arrive in the mail.
To the Cardist, the unboxing ritual is not a performance, but a vibe.
A myriad of micro moments and emotions to take in.
There’s the heart’s leap when the door bell rings.
The arrival of the package.
The glimpse of the label to confirm what we already know to be inside.
Then, there’s our eager grabbing of a blade.
The slicing open of the box.
And always, the peering in and hoping… that reality got the memo from our expectations.
We reach in, carefully cradling our new decks from the box.
We’re eager to open them… yet not quite.
”But they’re so new”, we reason both ways.
Should we use them? Should we not?
Could we just imagine what they look like, feel like, and be just as satisfied?
Are our hands clean enough? Dry enough?
Should we have bought more?
”No. I have enough”, we say every week.
We hold up the tuck case. The cellophane crinkles.
We admire the art work on the outside, all while hoping no dents reveal themselves.
Then finally, mustering up the courage, we allow ourselves the satisfaction of peeling the pull-tab… watching as it traces its way around the edge.
The first "open" is complete. Now the second one awaits.
We could stop now, but we know it’s already too late.
So, we admire the now naked tuck case, as our thumb presses into the edge of the flap - flicking upwards as one strikes a match.
Only here, the spark is a sound - that satisfying first “click” of when the top pops open.
Will we ever get tired of that click? Or the sweet aroma that arises?
The flap hovers over, casting a soft shadow.
We pause a final time, distracting ourselves with the little details.
“Designed for Cardistry”, it says. Neat.
A sliver of the deck’s design peeks out as we peer down.
The grain on the edge teases our fingertips of the tactility to come.
And gently, we draw the cards cards out - and the true first impression is made.
Well, almost.
For they say you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Yet what is a deck’s back, but a book waiting to be opened; to be read?
So, we flip the pages open to its faces -
Going through each card. Seeing each pip. Admiring each Icon.
A fine table of contents.
And now, the real reading begins.
Yet in this book, one isn’t immersed in words.
Here, in a deck of cards, paper pages come to life through movement and form.
Our hands write their story in realtime, as packets shift and dance in our hands.
Music emerges - as the pasteboards collide - from the sonata of springs to the near-silent harmony of woven cards. (And sometimes, in secret, we supply sound effects with our mouths.)
And as with all things that build, so comes the inevitable… drop.
The first one cuts the deepest. The long hair is the grossest.
Yet, with each stage of our deck’s breaking in?
A little more of ourselves gets to break out.
Perhaps, with each time we let go, we gain a little more control.
As if our hands… gain their footing?
They walk a bit. And then after some falls and false starts… they begin to run.
And then they dance.
And then we begin to dance, on the inside, too.
So no, what’s inside the box is not “just another deck”.
For our cards help us to play, and to say… what our words can’t always convey.
To the outsider, we move cards.
They don’t know, that just as much…
Each move, moves us.
So don’t rush. Sit down. Soak it in.
And enjoy… Mail Day.
Love,
The Virts
