Week 8 or 9 of the UK lockdown time to take a look at my FT991A, is it any good, well yes it's bloody fantastic... If you ar thinking of buying one or already own one but have not looked at it yet this upload may help.
I have the Yaesu FT DX 3000 as the main radio...Got the FT 891 during the lockdown for portable as well as digital use and recently purchased the FT 991A again for portable use with the RV to have the "Shack in a Box" capability. Coupled with the ATAS 120A antenna my first contact with that antenna was across the US from the Gold Country of the Sierra Nevada to Pennslyvania on 17m. I was impressed and very happy indeed!
I already own the FTDX 1200, FTDX 10, I now have a FT 991A and I'm amazed at the quality of rx tx audio ! The receive filtering is excellent 👍! Beyond satisfied ! 3 band parametric EQ is icing on the cake
Glad you've found one......I've had one on order for 6 weeks and have yet to see it. Now, they're talking about a June shipment date but I'm not counting on it. If car companies can't get chips to sell cars what chance do I have on a radio?
That’s really helpful, thank you so much. Been weighing up options for when funds permit and subject to selling some existing equipment later in the year. Thanks and 73 de MJ0RZD Rob
Only had mine a few weeks and learning fast, some more pointers from this, disappointed on frontend weakness as I enjoy field days so thanks for warning.
thank you for the radio info you have been a big help, I like the idea of having a shack in a box I am just a little concerned about if l would be able to get into a fusion repeater, mind you l do have d star also running a hotspot. this is all new to me as l have been off the for over 35 years wow what a change lol regards ALLAN G6tmo
Really like this rig, and have had it for about 6 months, but the new ftdx10 looks amazing. The improvements to the menus, display etc have come a long way. Yes its more, but for the additional $600 it looks like it may be worth it. My 991 is always in the F list. Ive set the bottom four with 1. Meter 2. PWR 3. NB 4. MCH, then put the remaining options to the page with the DNR DNF etc. This setup gives me immediate access to the most used functions all the time.
Hello thanks for the video, I just purchased the ft-991a , I like the radio very much, tnx for the video very much, it was very helpful. N8DUK, Ron Columbus, Ohio 73
Nice informal look at this rig, thanks. I have been thinking of buying one so the "hands on" is helpful. Am I right in thinking that it has a plastic (resistive) touch screen? That would seem a shame when (for example) all modern phone screens are glass with capacitive sensors, less likely to scratch when cleaning off the fingerprints.
Great stuff Mike , I'm looking at upgrading from an old 706mk2g pretty soon and it's been a toss up between the 7300 , 991a and even the ftdx10 . But for my needs the 991a fits the bill 👍👍
My favorite radio is my old Yaesu ft 450 for me it is just about perfect. One thing I really like is the ability to change the display colors and the built in tuner, both the later versions were not able to do these. I have quite a few rigs kenwoods, Icom, drakes but it's my favorite. The 991 might be next.73
Just got mine - really find it a bit of a challenge to get used to how the radio "remembers" things. Biggest things I've now "forced" into my memory is this: 1. The multi-knob will remain doing the last thing you selected and used it for (except for scrolling through menu options - it never forgets or overrides that function) - so, if you come into the main menu from start-up, go into memory mode, use the multi-knob to switch through channels, then change the SQL with the knob, you cannot change channels with the knob until you go back into the Function menu, search for the "MCH" button and press it... 2. I thought my waterfall was "broken" - if you press the "Sweep" button, it will stop the waterfall - you will have to press it again - even if you power cycle. 3. To get settings etc sorted in order to save to memory, make sure you are in VFO mode and not Memory mode...
Nice radio. I used to have a fusion repeater near me about 3 miles away but it was taken down. if I want to do fusion then I have to use a raspberry pi. ive have a ft70de and a 2de yaesu radios. Can you touch the water full display to change to a active signal?
Hi Mike. Could you please do a C4FM demo? I am buying one next week, just wanted to see how it works on the 991a and if possible could you also do a demo on CW? Cheers
I'm in the U.S. I've been considering replacing my Icom 718 and Yaesu Ft-2900R with the FT-991A for some time. It comes with all the HF bands, plus 6 meters, 2 meters, and 70CM, all in one radio. But all I keep hearing about it is how many problems it has. On one video, someone actually chose an Icom IC7300 over the FT-991A. Besides being a fancier radio, an IC7300 doesn't do anything my 718 doesn't do. I wanted all the bands in one radio. Looks like that is not going to happen, at least not just yet.
Very interesting, I've been debating between the FT-991A and Icom 7300. I'm leaning heavily towards the FT-991A, I have limited desk space and this would allow me to replace my HF and VHF/UHF rigs with a single box... 73 de VE3EBQ
@@mike-M0MSN Brilliant if I use a yagi with good db, I've got a pole right on the v of my apex a 3.5 mtrs above gutter height, should gain extra db, without going above 10watts.
Hi Mike, I have just got a 991A new, but something strange keeps happening. The waterfall freezes or does not come on at all, needing the radio to be reset. Any ideas?
@@mike-M0MSN Thank you for the reply Mike, I did ring ML&S this morning, I did get it from them. They could not offer an explanation but have put a note on my account. If it keeps happening it will have to go back :( Many thanks Mike keep up the good work with you're videos. 73 Stay safe.
hollyend01 thanks. Ah. Too tender. I have an ftdx5000 and run them pretty much next to each other antenna wise. I’ve got the 991 on a vertical and the 5000 on 5 band trap at 30 ft. Long wire, coat hangers etc. Ie all wire antennas. Been running in this configuration for about 3 months and touch wood, no problems
@@mike-M0MSN Very nice! I still watch your unbox video often. I'm now M7JHA, sitting my Intermediate next month. I have a 9700, but no HF rig yet. I'm torn between a few options, but am dreaming big! I hope you're keeping well 😊
Had the ft991, sold it, i know most radios are menu driven, but this was frustrating, best way to use this radio was using HRD or Win4yaesu. Had no interest in the C4FM stuff, so never tested it...
Hi there, I am finding yours, and others, efforts to show the FT991A to be totally infuriating. Not one of you, that I have found has shown us around the radio, I cannot find a shot of the back for the sockets, nobody tells us if it is a 230 or 12v, has it 2 antenna sockets or just 1? has it any connection to a computer ? All of you just show the front. Then you put the crazy shortcuts across the front of the picture, which blocks our vision and if you want to pause and look closely at something you are showing, the crazy shortcuts telling us we can jump ahead comes back and stays there. Hopeless is the only comment that comes to mind.
