This was my family’s first game console. I still remember my mom laughing herself silly playing Smurfs and repeatedly dying trying to jump over some bushes.

Cool console to have as your first. Thanks for sharing the memory of your mom playing Smurfs. Made me chuckle. 🤣 Reminds me of my grandma seeing Donkey Kong for the first time in like 1983. Good times. Thanks for watching.

The way the music stalls when it loads the next screen…I had forgotten about that!

On Smurfs, yeah it does. Consequences of having only 1Kb of system ram and probably some sloppy coding on the developers part. But man, it does takes you back in time to see a game do that.

I got a ColecoVision for Christmas as a child. I remember playing Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Popeye, and Galaxian. Great system. The graphics even today look pretty decent. I wish there were more homebrew efforts for this classic console.

Awesome!! I bet you were super happy. With the right programing, nice things can be accomplished with the Colecovision for sure. If you haven't checked out Colecovision Addict... cvaddict.com/ There some cool homebrews there for purchase and for free.

Great video! Colecovision was something I never grew up with. I mostly played Atari and NES in the early years. I'm also considering of making a sperate video of Coleco's involvement with Nintendo in negotiations back in the early 1980s. I feel like that could be a good "What If" video if Coleco got more involved working with Nintendo.

Thanks bro. I can tell you this, Nintendo was worried about Coleco. They really thought that's who they would be competing against with the Famicom and upcoming NES. They knew about Sega obviously , but it's sales were nothing compared to Nintendo until the Genesis so they were not that concerned with them. That's one of the reasons Nintendo tried the partnership with Atari, until that fateful CES show, that is. lol

That expansion module is honestly a pioneer. You could probably tie a number of console hardware add-ons to that. I think of N64 and it's own Expansion Pack to play Donkey Kong and most of Perfect Dark, which, coincidentally I was playing this past weekend.

Yeah man, the Coleco was pretty dope!! There's some cool 3rd party aftermarket expansion products out there. They do some amazing things for the system, but most are rare and $$. Perfect Dark. Love that game bro. 👍👍

My family had an Intellivision, but I was too young to remember it. Otherwise, Colecovision was my first console, along with a Commodore 64 as the family computer. I didn’t have a 2600 until I found one at a yard sale as an adult. The Colecovision absolutely crushed the Atari when it came to quality and capability. I wish I still had it.
@RetrogamerGenX
@RetrogamerGenX 2 месяца назад
Nice.. We had the 2600, then the NES. Somewhere in between we got the C64. But I knew someone that had a Colecovision, and man did I want it. The Coleco way out performed the 2600. There really is no comparison. 🤣

If that had come out in 1979 it would have been absolutely incredible, but would have been very expensive, in 1983 it was still very impressive.
@RetrogamerGenX
@RetrogamerGenX 2 месяца назад
If it had released in 79' it would have been around $400 which with inflation Which would come to around $1800 today. But man, it would have been awesome to see it come out that early.

Coleco should have seen the writing on the wall with the General Instruments chip shortage and developed their own chip. The TI graphics chip was obsolete in 1982. The biggest problems were it required a lot of RAM and it only had mono sprites and would flicker with more than 4 on a single scanline.
@RetrogamerGenX
@RetrogamerGenX 2 месяца назад
Ah, but the Coleco was expandable. With the memory expansion it rocks. Really the Colecovision, SMS, MSX, etc are pretty much the same system. Just tweaked a bit for each individual system. More ram, different audio/graphics chips, and system roms. But in essence, the architecture is the same. I never had one in the 80's, but I sure wanted one. I had to wait like 20 years, but I finally got one.
@tarstarkusz
@tarstarkusz 2 месяца назад
@@RetrogamerGenX The TI chip needs its own 16k of RAM that cannot be shared with the Z80 and is not on the z80 address bus. The Colecovision has 17k of RAM, but only 1k is available to software. The SMS has a completely different graphics subsystem.
@RetrogamerGenX

I hear ya, but let me rephrase myself. lol Put it this way, not siblings, but cousins. DIfferent, but same family tree. You jive?
@tarstarkusz
@tarstarkusz 2 месяца назад
@@RetrogamerGenX Well, the SG1000 and MSX are more like siblings. They are incredibly similar. While the SMS might be a cousin. But even that I'm not sure captures it because it's not just an improved SG1000. It has a next generation graphics chip. The difference in capability between the SMS and the SG1000 is huge. You simply could not do a reasonable version of SMS Sonic on a Colecovision or SG1000.

Coleco did not have the infrastructure or experience to start designing and manufacturing chips. Coleco was not commodore

I'm in the process of re-mastering the old videos. I think when I did this one, I was still going by the old channel name. The audio was horrible, and a lot of the "effects/cuts" were not very good. I posted in my community tab a couple weeks back stating I was going to start re-mastering the older ones. The Pippin, Astrocade, and microvision vids that I did recently were new. So I'm putting some new, and some re-mastered old ones up over the summer.

TIL what CoLeCo actually stands for! 🤯 The Telstar "handball" game resembles squash or jai-lai (if anything) more than the actual Olympic sport by that name. I've attended a pro handball league game but I guess even 40+ years later most of the NA market isn't familiar with it.
@RetrogamerGenX
@RetrogamerGenX 2 месяца назад
Thanks for watching. Awesome that you learned something new from it. Handball in America at least, is popular in jails and prisons. Not sure why, but it is. Pickleball has become really popular in the US lately. I have played some pickleball in the last year as well. It was fun, but I enjoy golf more. Call me lazy, but nothing like hitting the links on a Sunday afternoon.

@@RetrogamerGenX You're most welcome. Yeah, my Dad's gotten into pickleball at weekends lately though I can't imagine there'll be a hit video game about it anytime soon! I live very near to a golf course but unlike my late aunt & uncle, still prefer a blast of Toadstool Tour since I'm terrible at tee shots & drives IRL.

Don't forget that Coleco had racing games and tank (combat) on their pong units. Some also had early light gun games. I have to wonder what could have been done with TTL had it hung on a little longer. Atari's breakout (which is actually several games) and stunt rider were also TTL game on a chip games. 18 months later it would have been double again.

I was fortunate to own both Atari 2600 and ColecoVision. Even though the ColecoVision had the better graphics, my family and friends enjoyed the Atari 2600 games a lot more. I would've got the Intellivision too until I went to a friend's house that had one, and I tried it out, and that controller SUCKED!
@RetrogamerGenX
@RetrogamerGenX 2 месяца назад
Nice, you had both systems. Yeah controllers were still being perfected during the 2nd Gen. It really wasn't until the 4th Gen and the SNES controller that things started to standardize. Most controllers these days are based on the SNES design.
