I get asked a question often regarding the tools needed to start on repairing fishing reels as a hobby. I just did this video in response to that question. See what tools I deem as a necessity and those that are not needed to start.
I have been servicing #fishing #reels for over 25 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please like it and subscribe to see more on fishing #reel repair and service

Outstanding information to get me started in reel maintenance Dennis! I particularly liked the idea of not going out and purchasing everything before starting your first reel. Get the basics and add to your tool collection when needed. I will review all your videos to get a better understanding to approach my first reel. Many thanks for this video!!

Thanks for the excellent & thorough class on getting started in reel servicing & repair. Your reasoning and explanation of what tools were beneficial to have & why was a nice touch to the presentation. It was good of you to show that, if need be, inexpensive tools can do the job as well as the more expense ones, especially when you may only uses some of them a few times a year. 👍Back when I was a youngster, my tools usually came from either Sears or Western Auto and the workbench for my father, brother & me was the kitchen table, with an old white towel laid on it and a half-sheet baking sheet on top of the towel. It's nice that today, a variety of decent tools can be had at reasonable prices. Thanks again for a great video that everyone can learn from.

I personally use my Chapman gunsmithing bit driver kit and my Grace wood handled gunsmithing screwdriver set. I already had them for working on firearms and my vintage airguns where you absolutely need drivers with well fitting parallel ground tips to avoid damaging the screw slots. Since my area of interest lies almost exclusively in vintage spinning reels, I'm mostly dealing with standard slotted screws which I have found have straight parallel slots like the gun / airgun screws I'm used to working with, so I prefer to just stick with my gunsmithing screwdrivers. I'm not saying everybody needs to spend what I have on premium American made drivers, but while they are expensive then Harbor freight they don't cost a fortune and are well worth it. They pay for themselves every time you don't damage a screw with poorly fitting drivers.

I would certainly like having a ratchet screwdriver set. I do use my Mitchell tools a great deal. Have you seen how much a set of Mitchell tools go for these days? Dennis I have a tool that fits on the end of a slide hammer that I use to remove stuck bearings.Rick Stivers made it for me. - chris

Dennis, what might be some good real cleaners but I might have in my shop already
@2ndChanceTackle

One of the best is Penn rod and reel cleaner. If you don't have that, any household metal polish would work. You can also use Purple Power or a general degreaser spray. If you choose to use those, make sure to wear protective gloves. One contains lye and others use chemicals that may irritate the skin - Thanks for asking - Dennis

What about the special tool for the Daiwa MQ series reels, I can’t find one, I’ve seen where someone made one out of a 12 gauge shotgun choke ? Thanks.

Nearly all of the fishing tackle shops in my area have discontinued reel repair/service. They all tell me the same thing - that the time it takes to service and repair reels is simply not worth it for them. It takes up too much time and effort, and they simply do not make enough money from doing reel repairs. Their profit margin is too small. So I'm faced with having to do my own reel repairs. I've never been mechanically inclined, so I'm a bit intimidated. I've taken one reel apart thus far, and was blown away at how many little parts a reel contains. Any tips for me? What's the most important piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out in reel repair?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 месяца назад
I almost always tell folks to get a copy of the reel schematic before you begin and to take pictures along the way of what you are removing and where you are removing the pieces from. I also say to have a parts organization plan in place before you take anything off. Plan for what you are going to do with the parts ahead of time. The schematic will show you the burst diagram to give you an idea what is under the covers. Pictures are your reference point in case you get stuck on reassembly. Planning ahead on parts helps keep them organized and limits possibly losing them when it is time to reinstall.

the big set still in the wrapper is from wally world, it's price is 10 to 12 dollars, cheap way to get started, even if you don't do a lot of reels , it will be handy around the house. I maybe prejudice, but you can never have too many tools
