I started with a cheap guide which was fine when I was learning ,then got a more expensive guide the roller jammed right from the off.I ended up flattening the roller,so that was a pile of junk. Then I learned freehand all the time using diamond stones and strop to finish of which I now get the best results.

Fair play, the Veritas guides are expensive, but that setting gauge looks easy to use and keeps the blades square. I have the generic version of the Lie Nielsen you showed which is much harder to set the blade in square, also it won't hold very small chisels. I have tried using wet/dry sand paper to sharpen tools, however it tears easily.

I had the generic one too starting out and it was definitely frustrating!

Excellent demonstration video. I was just thinking last weekend - I need to sharpen these chisels. I have subscribed to follow along with you. - Rick

Great video! I had actually hoped you would do a video like this. Pretty cool stuff. I had wondered how you got those blades sharp. Nicely done!!

Thank you! I hope to get one more combination stone that has 6000/10000 grit to really get a mirror polish

I got that Norton set years ago. The coursest grit was useless, it wears way too quick. I had the older veritas honing guide. I've adapted the Paul Sellers freehand sharpening method now for plane blades and chisels.
