35 years on and I realize that I’ve had this and Brave Starr mashed up as one show in my head. God bless the 80s where a child had their choice of Space Cowboy Cartoon.
At least 3 of em in the US. This, Bravestarr, and Saber Rider. If I could code or get people to play it and not laugh at it my 2nd series of a Super Robot Wars campaign would have this show and Bravestarr in it. (Saber Rider was in the first part and this one is about 30 years afterwards. Think things have gotten to Mad Max the original levels. Stuff is going to crap but heroes inspired by the battles the previous generations fought and died in have inspired a new generation of heroes.)
Chuck's joke game was on point here. Especially loved comparing the AI to Clippy, and the comment on how, if you're outnumbered badly enough, you don't need to worry about aiming.
In a single episode Niko is already more useful than Troi in entire seasons. Edit: Yes, even taking into consideration that she gets captured and held hostage. Troi sets a low bar.
A quirk of the TV schedules left me watching something else, but always enjoyed the music in the ending credits (which is probably the same as the intro). Because the other show finished earlier. Seems like such a great show.
Got the DVD set on my shelf. :D For some reason this was popular enough in Germany for a boxset so I got that. Always felt that this show failed it's potential but I still liked the highlights.
Part of me swears I saw this show as a kid and simply don't remember any of it - which is entirely true - but another part of me wants to say I'm confusing it with a *different* space cowboy cartoon. There were so many of them, after all. ...a bit of searching the comments sees BraveStar mentioned and that is also probably what I'm thinking of. Problem is, I can't remember anything from it, either, but am certain I saw it at some point in my young life. ..kind of like Exo Squad, really. Chuck's remark about being both of and ahead of its time is pretty accurate. When I would rewatch G1 Transformers and other great 80s cartoons from my childhood, I would often lament that though they were fun they're also just too episodic with very few moments of actual continuity and story arcing. Hard to believe that just a few years after Transformers ended we'd get stuff like Beast Wars and Gargoyles with their strong characterization and writing.
So, are the Galaxy Rangers a new thing, or just these four a new team of rangers? Or are they Earth's first rangers? Because I'd gotten the idea from the previous episode that Earth is the new guy on the block (which is why they're getting tech transfers and Queen What's-Her-Name is only just now discovering what awesome batteries they make,) yet everybody knows the Galaxy Rangers on sight (well, their insignia,) which implies either they're a well-established organization or they've got the best media people _ever._
The main characters are "Series 5" Rangers, which are new. There are a lot of other rangers in the show, but I don't think any of the others have superpowers.
