We take a look at the 4-COR driving motor brake third, based at the East Kent Railway, Shepherdswell where it has been restored to a high standard by the volunteers of the Southern Electric Group. This vehicle is operated in passenger service (as hauled stock) on a few dates during the operating season and gives a unique opportunity to sample pre-war Southern Electric stock.

I did my earlier degrees at Sussex University and occasionally there would be a 4-COR unit from Falmer back to Brighton. The 'thrum' sound was very entertaining and a welcome change from the rather dull electric multiple units.

You didn't travel from Victoria to Gillingham in the 80's on a 4-COR!

@@Ben-xe8ps Not necessarily, no, but this just evoked memories of doing so 👍🏻

Lovely to hear that MG set running! I have happy childhood memories of COR unit MG sets gently humming away at Portsmouth Harbour, whilst awaiting departure for London. I also travelled on them to Reading in their twilight years.

Used to travel on these units between Guildford and Waterloo from 1960-1970 and on occasional seaside excursions from Epsom to to the coast. Happy days. Also enjoyed watching all these units from my trainspotting days at Wimbledon/Clapham Jct. including 4 BUF/4RES/4GRI/4PUL

Bloody marvellous, shame you've no full set and no juice Rail but great to see the old Girl. I remember seeing these Units in Lewes occasionally when going up to Work at Southern House. We called them Nelsons and I remember how the front connecting Door used to sway when she went over Switch and Crossings at speed like at Three Bridges.

hi there, great video. i am old enough to remember these units in service, what great days when the railway was a proper railway, this 3142 used to be housed at LUL museum dept at Acton and i often used to walk through it and go back in time, in the early 60s wherei used to live we had 6-pul units with similar insides,we used to pick the london train up at lewes. always had a 52 headcode on it

Good old "Nelsons". These are, by far, the most comfortable coaches ever. Put todays stock to shame.

Those sounds! Pure time travel. My memories only go back to 4-SUBs and EPBs, but that characteristic tick of the compressor, brilliant. The sounds, and smells, of the EMU were such a part of the experience of travelling on one. I can almost smell the hot brakes! I had no idea that the 4-COR DMB had working electrics. Are the traction motors also in working order? Would love to hear that "rising moan" of the motors again! Keep up the good work!

Great days, I was on the farewell tour with 3142 and the non stop run from Waterloo to Pompey was marred by a signal stop in Guildford where some of the punters threw empty bottles and cans at the box. 11187 was the motor coach off 3135 and my records show that 3142 was running with 11161 and 11201.

Yes the above is correct regarding 3135. One of the trailers also survives as this was swapped one of 3142 due to it was damaged before delivery.

As a Southern Electric fan I think it`s a great shame that there is no third rail on heritage railways. I understand why of course but it is a shame.
