Madrid is a census-designated place in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, United States. It is part of the Santa Fe, New Mexico Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 149 at the 2000 census and 204 in 2010. Today, Madrid has become an artists' community with galleries lining New Mexico State Road 14 (the Turquoise Trail). It retains remnants of its history with the Mineshaft Tavern and the Coal Mine Museum.
In the opening scene of Breaking Bad ("Ozymandias"), Walter White takes a break after his first methamphetamine cook to call his wife, Skyler, to suggest the family do something the show's creator (Vince Gilligan) says he and his girlfriend did, "head up to Turquoise Trail and stop at Tinkertown, maybe grab some lunch in Madrid".

Been there many times since I was a kid. In the 60s it was a remote "ghost town" and the old Engine always gave me the spooks. Mine Shaft Tavern is a must-do and the locals are friendly and quite the artsy-old hippie folks. Don't know when that happened but I've always enjoyed Madrid and its quirkiness. Folk Singer Burl Ives used to live not far away on the Turquoise Trail some years back. It's small, meandering wilderness highway goes right through town and into Santa Fe-a great scenic drive through scrub desert.

It is by no means a “quiet” town. The motorcyclist appear to be the lifeblood of the town.

Watched it again since I'm interested in visiting. It's just a shopping stop, I think. I absolutely detest loud Harley noise. Even though I first rode a motorcycle when I was 13 years old..... At some point, the sounds of nature and silence become more valuable....
