Xtra videographer Michael Pihach looked in on a Toronto People with AIDS Foundation fundraiser at Gladamans Den on Feb 15.
In it Toronto artist George MacIntyre donated his painting of the historic St Charles Tavern to the 519 Community Centre. Pihach caught up with some of those who remember life in Toronto when the St Charles was the gay hotspot.

I appreciate this. When I was a young man I was warned not to go into the St. Charles. So I didn't--my loss.

An excellent take on dear old Charlies--the first gay bar I went to in Toronto in 1970. It was tryly scary those Halloween Eve's when anti-gay bashers arrived to throw eggs. I remember many people coming in were physically accosted and the police did nothing. There are several scene is the late Gordon Anderson's postumpusly novel "The Toronto I am Leaving" which I wrote the Preface that take place in Charlies. (notably the svenes where he drinks witht his street hustler boy friend).James Dubro

the clock tower was allowed to basically disintegrate for however long ... it was an eyesore extraordinaire that never got a coat of paint during it's tenure as the gay landmark of Toronto. Wonder why? It was wholly neglected up until most recently. I view it with derision as a signpost of civic pride failure.

St.Charles Gay tavern. Been in a couple of times. Just to check it out. Not gay !! Went on Halloween with my boyfriend years n years ago and a gay guy loved my boyfriends scarf and wanted it. LolOf course he never got that scarf. Just checking this out as my mom thought it was not on Yonge street. Sending it's to show her it was.
