Wonderful short film, as an Ethiopian born in the states I find that the best part of Ethiopia is the extreme diversity. At this late date, it's sad to see my people discriminate against our Jewish brothers and sisters. Ironically, the uniqueness of the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, and indeed Ethiopian culture as a whole, owes a good deal to the contributions of the Ethiopian Jews. At one point, Ethiopia was home to large communities of all 3 major Abrahamic faiths before continued persecution forced the so-called "Falashas" out of a land that had given them a safe haven for several centuries. It is my hope that one day a stronger and more vibrant community of Beta Israel can exist in Ethiopia. Peace to our Jewish brothers and sisters in Gondar and Israel respectively.
Yes Inon I agree, there are very few 100% Beta Israelites left in the country and many of the ones left in Ethiopia are converts in certain cases. There were a lot of forced conversions and rampant proselytizing in the old days so many former ET Jews became Protestants thanks to the Orthodox kings letting in European missionaries in the name of Christendom. Despite my name I'm no Jew myself so I'm no true authority, but I can't help but feel that it's a good thing if those converts AND those few genuine Jews get to have a more vibrant community in Ethiopia.
