Helen you can flick the dry Cotman paint out of the half pans and squeeze whatever tube paint you like in, instead of breaking off the lever and using magnets. Much easier
@helencryer
@helencryer 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the suggestion! Really though, I'd rather the Cotmans paints get used by someone who wants them, and I like the idea of using the paints in pans that I've already got, interchangeably. Some of my favourite paints aren't in tubes - I just have half pans of them.

That Paul Rubens paper is 100% cotton. It’s really fun to use. I like it best for making hand made cards for special people. I don’t think the glitter would show up under glass if it’s framed. It’s nice to paint on. I used it for Christmas cards.

Enjoy "MAKING COLOUR SING". I have had my original copy since 1995...and it is a classic....and at the time of the initial publication...a diamond in the rough...though some of her colours are"fugitive"...like the alizarin Crimson PR83 and the rose madder genuine...she is SO RIGHT ABOUT THE GLAZING WITH COLBAT BLUE...AUREOLIN YELLOW AND ALIZARIN......She is a glaing master...and i love the neutrals she gets and her emphasis on good neutrals...have fun...

Hi Helen! I enjoy very much your videos, be they art materials hauls, painting or anything else that you like to share with us. Pastels are a wonderful medium, being so direct and ready at your fingertips. A long time ago, when I used to paint in pastels, working on medium, or even large sized paintings, I used the Prismacolor NuPastels as a base layer (or even for sketches) since they are harder and also relatively cheap. In the final stages of the painting I pushed the softer ones (Sennelier, Unison, Schmincke) into the tooth of the paper, working them as a baker would do the cream on a cake, with the end result looking much like an oil painting (I was told). If you work on smaller sized pieces, you could definitely use all of them interchangeably, as you showed here in this video. It’s so much fun! I hope you’ll enjoy your new findings. A big hug from California 😊❤

An interesting and varied haul. I’m intrigued by the press. It looks like it can be used to keep pages together for making books, like sketchbooks. I’m quite interested in making my own watercolor sketchbooks. I need to use up the sketchbooks I have before I embark on making my own sketchbooks. I have an excellent book glue which I needed to repair the spine of a book. So then I thought I can use the glue up to make watercolor sketchbooks. 😊

Hi Helen! This is timely. I was just contemplating between a set of unison or sennelier soft pastels! I used some cheap ones in art class and hated all the dust. But I’ve heard the experience with one of these brands is so much better that I’m going to get a small set to try. I’m hoping I will enjoy it enough to invest in a larger set. It’s interesting to hear the recommendation for a harder pastel as a base. I look forward to seeing how you use them!
@helencryer
@helencryer 4 месяца назад
I hope you enjoy whichever you choose! I think which paper you use helps with the dust as well. I feel there's less dust with the Pastelmat, than with less textured papers, just because it grips everything so well.

Travel palettes are my favorite kind of palette 😃 Although I've looked at lots of different kinds and brands, I keep coming back to the portable micro painter. I just love the size and number of places to mix on it vs a homemade tin palette or some of the other options out there. You can use the bottom for water or mixing and that gives me brush options, water brush or travel brush. I've never been drawn to the standard portable painter though. Apart from the fact that I'd probably lose the clip that holds it altogether first time out, I just don't really like the design of it. If they designed a double length micro, built the same way as the micro, that would really interest me. I love old books, especially well used ones because you know it must hold lots of knowledge treasures if it's well used. I'm always a bit suspicious of "brand new looking" 2nd hand books.

I really enjoy the micro, but I do like the standard portable painter too, but for when I have a desk/coffee table to stand it on. I think I just like books full stop!!

I have that little Cotman kit too. I got the navy and now wished it was the white version. It is handy but I am still in love with my Derwent Line & Wash set (which only has the Meadow Graphitint though). I decided about a month ago to try lino cutting again as I hadn't since school. I invested in the bench hook because there are pointy and sharp reasons I hadn't used lino blades since then and a few scars from stupidity 😅. That press is very cool! I will have to see if I can find an American version. Wow, another novella comment. Thank you for the video, Helen! I really loved your work from Greece.

Hi Helen, I have got Sennelier soft pastels that I bought singly, many years ago and they have always felt like soft, loose face powder to me, I love them, even though they’re a bit messy. They were always more expensive but worth it in my opinion. I’ve also got several sets of Unison pastels that I love equally, I always get seduced into buying them because of their scrumptious colour sets, my favourites being the set of teals and turquoises! Wish you hadn’t shown these two, they’re my ultimate favourites and I’m itching to buy some more now🤔😖😖😖😂😂 Thankyou for sharing, take care xx

Very nice haul. I look forward to your review of the Paul Rubens 5th Generation set as I love the color range. Beautiful set.I have recently started buying some used art books for the same reason regarding the cookbooks. I have a set of 1950's WN Pastels that are similar to the set of Prisma. I have to be careful though because there are a lot of Cadmium colors in the set. Enjoy all your new goodies.

This is very timely! I don’t even quite know what has prompted this, but I have been seriously contemplating purchasing that set of Nupastels, even though I am not really into pastels. I do have the full set of colored Conte crayons (which is just 48 colors) and I am curious how the Nupastels compare. Almost all conte crayons (except the black, as far as I can tell, which is still made in France) have changed dramatically from how they used to be decades ago. It’s not just a quality control issue, but rather they are like a different medium now.The colored Conte crayons are currently very much like hard pastels and completely dry, but the dust they generate is very gritty… smudging with your fingers feels like you are moving around very fine sand and there are problems with “adhesion” to many kinds of paper. Is the dust generated by the Nupastels like a fine powder, as is the case with softer pastels (even though there would be less of it)?
@helencryer
@helencryer 4 месяца назад
I have been experimenting for you! Firstly, the dust is just powder-like and not gritty/sandy at all. I was using them with Pastelmat, and all the excess dust once blended was able to adhere to the surface. I also dug out an ancient (made in France) Conté crayon set, and just to give you a frame of reference, the NuPastels are more soft and creamy than those. The Contés felt scratchier.
@Anonymoi
@Anonymoi 4 месяца назад
@@helencryer Thank you, that is good to know! I wish they still sold Nupastels open stock. I am in the US and have wondered whether the European market still gets Conte crayons which are made in France, or if they have no French manufacturing anymore for anything but black. I don’t know if you would know. Product pages never say where they are made, and I have experimented with purchasing several sets and packs of individual colors, to find that sanguine and white are made in China, as are the sets of colors, and black (at least 2B hardness) is still made in France. The French-made black Contes are hard but go on smoothly and feel almost like they have the tiniest bit of oil in them. That is how I remember black, as well as white and sanguine colors from the mid-90s. We routinely used them on newsprint in life drawing classes. But now even those other “sketching colors” are like gritty chalk and wouldn’t work as well on thin smooth paper like newsprint.
