I think I'm going to "his" high school and I'll enroll. I mean... Maybe get a job as support staff, because teacher/student relationships are not accepted by society.... And I really don't want to teach... "I'm just here for S. Pankey" I'll say, when we get caught in the cleaning cupboard, where he'll be "teaching" me what other skills his amount of stamina and rhythm enable him to have. Now I must remove myself from viewing this RU-vid video, and having fantasies about this man, that will require me to go for confession.
At around 1:54 you chose to have the disabled kid near the front. I respect that decision; a lot of people would have put him in the back instead. Shows that your school is probably a welcoming environment to all.
Why so many dislikes, A teacher who puts "everyone" in this video.... I was like I want my kids to go there.... This is the best teaching ever, as he is an amazing teacher ..... Yes he did the whole thing, but made sure everyone felt great in it... stop hating.... this is the best thing I have seen ever!!!!! People of all nations, sizes, disabilities, genders were spotlighted!
As a mother of a daughter with special needs I was so moved to see EVERYONE included in this video. The student who jumps out of his mobility chair and busts out some of the best moves in the entire video made me cry. This is just awesome.
TrippyJV Thank you so much for uploading. I had tears in my eyes when I saw the one student who is perhaps specially challenged in front the wheel chair having fun with his classmates. I love the inclusiveness here! Everyone is a STAR!
Yup really happy that everyone let go of their inhibitions and decided to have fun. An full marks to the professor for getting his students irrespective of whatever to make this a fun project.
requiempoet it's not an award winning production. The underlying point was to show people. Irrespective of any of your insecurities. U are allowed to have fun without being judged
OMG!!!! 7 years later and I STILL get chills watching this wonderful video .I wonder what these students went on to accomplish. Where is that handsome teacher now? This is definitely one of my all -time favorite videos. TrippyJV, you captured a video performance that will stay with us for a long time to come!! Thanks.😊😊
That teacher was hot and can he ever dance! I loved everyone's dancing and having fun and my favorite part....the smiles and the special needs kid, not only was he included but right up front!
I had a lot of fun helping Johan Cruz film along with Abert Robledo! I never expected that it would turn out this good, but I'm so glad and happy it did! Just a little info, A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School is a project-based learning school of choice in Dallas ISD. The recording was done during our Get Moving Friday...Every Friday classes are 10 minutes shorter giving the student 45 minutes to relax and "Get Moving." During this time the student has the ability to go to clubs, sports, tutoring, etc. I really enjoy New Tech and though that some of y'all might wanna hear about it!
Awesome! I live in Sweden and have watched this video 50 times for sure by now. It has the amazing ability to give you an injection of pure happy straight into your soul whenever you click it, on a level few other videos out there can compete with. (The Kiss guy/Foo Fighters video is another one) So you sure made an impact with this one, far and wide as the views grew beyond anyones wildest dreams - I guess at least :) ... But you also had a great time making it, and that really shows. That teacher, is he still working there today?
Katie Perry did that for Lakewood High School. They did a lipdub to her song since they are the Tigers. She came out and did a private concert for them.
I just watched again on a big screen and noticed there is someone dressed up as mascot or something, a bird? Your mascot is a Falcon as I understand it. Is it a red falcon? Just curious.
I live in Pa.. I'd Love to Do that. Love 💕 And God bless you and your loved ones always, grandma, Victoria, I Dance Everyday to stay in shape..❣️🙏🥰✝️💜💜💕
This has been a wonderful experience for us all at AMSNTH. I am the young man in the blue shirt with the walker ( it's not a wheelchair). I am not retarded ( as some have alluded in their comments) nor do I have any learning disabilities. Students have to apply to come to this school. I am a member of the National Honor Society and have taken Pre-AP, AP, and dual credit courses since I was accepted into this school. My plans include college and graduate school. I've made a personal thank you video for those of you who made the nice comments.
Being polite yet assertive in response to bullies and ignorance is a WONDERFUL trait to have. It's been 8 years... I hope you are doing well these days! By the way, when people try to bring you down, that means you are already above them... and they usually know it.
Was this filmed all in one take? Coz it sure looks like it, and if so -- just amazing! Hats off to the teacher, or whoever, that is the guy out front and who had to cover everything! Great work! And wonderful inclusion of EVERYBODY in the school. Hot damn!
This is the greatest school performance I have ever watched. I watch it almost every day beause it is so uplifting. The staff definately gave it their all as well as Mr. Panky. This will be number on hit for years to come.. Thanks for all of your hard work and entertainment. I just love how Scot interacts with his students and they are always on Que. Thanks for the memories.
I got exhausted just watching him...So Much RESPECT TO HIM FOR HIS DANCING SKILLS & ENDURANCE!!! Wonderful thing to see an Ensemble With Faculty & Students...CUDOS 👌👌👌⭐⭐⭐💯💯💯🦋
Angers me to see comments saying "the students should be learning instead of dancing and wasting time" or "this is very inappropriate," this is a PROJECT BASED learning school. The video was a theater arts project and it was for a grade. My sister is in the video and the lesson was learning rhythms and beats, so please people, brush up on your knowledge before you speak. SHOUT OUT TO VANE$$A. THEY PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLLAYYY
After viewing this video over 20 times today, it just proves the point: ALL of us can get along, if we choose! Every kid in this video is now the "Cool Kid", no one was left behind in the wings. Every colour, every size, every physical ability (or not) was included. THIS video gives me Hope. Thank you to ALL involved and especially the school administration that didn't Veto this idea but said, "Heck! Why not!?" Yes, indeed...why not! :D
some of the students might have been nervous going into this, I sure would have been.... but it all looks GREAT and all the hard work backstage really paid off. it is really cool that everyone got the invite. it is so cool seeing so much fun and work happening in one giant video shoot... a massive thank you to everyone who put on their group's color coordinating shirt and clothing.....it is all simply fantastic. !!!
I loved how the teacher got everyone involved and through such a great song. These are the kind of activities that help students to interact with one another and feel members of the same team. My sincere compliments to the wonderful teacher (he is also a great dancer)!
I love watching this video! I esp love how they include the disabled young man! EVERYONE is included, no discrimination. Love it! I know it prob took forever to learn the choreography, esp with diff dances with several groups. Kudos to everyone. Better than the original version! (Sorry, Bruno Mars!)
I’ve returned to this video time and time again over the years. What a sense of joy it brings me! How wonderful everyone is included! Thank you to the students, to the teacher and to the school that gave approval! Through your performance you have touched millions of lives in the best way!
I don't understand why some people are so upset that this may have happened during class time. Not all lessons in school need to be wrote work in a classroom. The lessons these students learned in creativity, timing, tech, and teamwork are all super valuable and worth the time that it would take to complete. Well done to all the staff and students at this school. The boost to these students self esteem and sense of accomplishment is worth it.
My guess is because it became to be about the teacher instead of being about the students. The teacher was out front and the focus the whole time instead of students. He is on the right path, but hopefully will learn to give up the spotlight to the students.
John Milton No, he was the lead because it would be unfair for just one student out of all of them to be the main focus, above her/his peers. In the school's hierarchy, the teacher is the leader. Therefore it just makes sense for him to be the lead dancer.
That is a great question. Someone should do a study because that was a freaking awesome video....so much fun, included so many of the kids... just a great video. Thanks for sharing!
Probably all those who believe it is a waste of time/money, as they are not learning vital lesson such as maths and english - as some of the comments below suggest unfortunately. Although, if you look carefully at the clock in the video, you can see that it is 4 o'clock so these kids are actually staying behind to do this which is great.
What an amazing teacher. He will never be forgotten by those students! I bet those students learned more from him than all the rest of their teachers put together! ❤️
Look carefully at the part of the song where he says smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy. On the teachers right side, camera right, special needs kid. Its pretty badass that he got included actively. And at the end they have him on the right side where he can be seen as everyone's coming up the stairs as he gets to jam with everybody else. That, my friends is inclusion.
I just love this. He included the whole entire student body.. Good on you sir for interacting and engaging the students in this happy experience. They will remember this forever.... And he has got some moves!!!! Keep up the good work sir.... I love it.....
How will it help you..you ask? Enlighten you? O.k., school isn't all about academics, it's about social tolerance, diversity, working together, excepting others and doing something together, it's about acceptance and it's about giving the next generation a reason to be positive about their future when so many others have turned their backs! It's about sitting down in class being able to do their school work because of the com rotary they feel amongst their peers and their teacher/teachers. Most of all it's taking a moment to see that they can make it and someone believes in them...and as hard as the academic part can be there is fun, there is a reason and there is hope..I don't see anything wrong with showing them that, well done Texas, well done!!
Hi Jen ...What is going on here is application of what is learned in the classroom. Performing Arts is essential for helping the brain to develop no matter the age, but helps especially early in life.
Lol "excepting others" and "com rotary." I agree with some of your points, but it sounds like you should have focused a bit more on the grammatical aspects of school when you had the chance.
I couldn't agree more! The attitude you approach life with (school, workforce etc) plays a huge role in you're motivation and success and how you define success, and what you radiate and spread to others.
You are right. The three pillars of our school is Trust, Respect, and Responsibility. Also, our system of education is being a project-based school, meaning we do a lot of projects throughout the year to work together and gain the best possible learning experience! That's why New Tech is unique and different! 👌
Saw this on Channel 5 News in LA....had to see the whole video. YOU GUYS ROCKED THAT! You can tell he is a teacher who is excited about what he does....thank you ALL for making me smile today!!!
Amazingly entertaining. The students and their 'leader' performed it to the T. WOW this is one of my favorite renditions of Mars' UPTOWN FUNK - Great work everyone, just fantastic
TrippyJV I assume you were the teacher? Well, for some reason about half way through I imagined this (you and the students) as a boss in a video game (for some reason...) and the objective would just be "Run away from the dance!"... Im weird and I like that
LOVE THIS. Love the kids, love the teacher, love the funk, love the choregraphy, love the diversity. And the school is sooo clean and tidy. Love it all.
To the negatives here, if you have a drama, music, art and dance background you can get ALL KINDS OF JOBS. And having friends in "the theater" are the neatest people to know. They are uninhibited (admittedly impusltive) and massive fun people with whom to be around.
It's actually in Dallas, TX. South of downtown. The Dallas Independent School District has suffered its fair share of bad press. I am THRILLED for these kids, the teachers and staff worked to make this happen. It's awesome!
Watching this never gets old. What a great guy..........and a great school. And I think back on the old fuddy duddies that were teaching when I went to high school. You kids today are so lucky! The times they are a changing.
GREAT JOB ! Coordinating that many people is a huge undertaking. As for those commenting on how shaky the camera man was, please consider being a mentor and volunteer at A. Maceo Smith. These students worked with what they had and did an AWESOME job. So proud of our students. #WorkIt
Yes! If she sees it, and I'm sure she has by now, I bet it'd be a big consideration. I hope I can get on her show to cheer the kids and teacher my best wishes!
I'm just an old relic who graduated High School in 1972, but we used to have COOL TEACHERS like this! It made school so much fun, and the majority of the kids actually came to LOVE the teachers because of it.
I gotta say this is one hell of an achievement. One continuous shot, and everybody involved in a project that could be a logistical nightmare. Such joy! And, aside from his talent, this teacher gets all those kids to stay after school and work it all out!
I can't believe 8 years has flown by since I first saw this video! But I still absolutely love watching these kids dance and have so much fun! I hope the teacher is blessed and doing well. He really did a good thing for his school and these kids by sharing their talent with the world! 💛 Thank you for the joy this has brought me!
It is so awesome to see a teacher engage with their students like this. Teachers need to think outside of the box to relate and educate our students. School is serious but why can't it be fun too? With two children of my own, one a senior and the other In Jr. High with ADD they both learn better when they are visual stimulated and actively involved in lessons instead of just being lectured at like most teachers do. New Age, New time, New methods of learning need to be more like this, maybe not to this extreme, it is a theater class after all, but curve it to the subject matter and enlighten our kids. GREAT JOB TECH HIGH!
These are the kind of teachers we need. This is what it's all about. Every child was included, every child participated, every race and color, and all you saw was LOVE!! God Bless this teacher. I hope that more teachers learn from him!! He deserves to be elected the best teacher ever!!!! Also, I thought it was heartful that a disabled child was included, and that he had a "front row" spot!!!
Ok so i watched this video last year at the end of February. I was so impressed with the teacher and the kids. Never heard this song before. I am 64 mom of 6 and grandmother of 15. Well I started dancing to this music. Well one year later i am 45 pounds lighter and feeling great. Thanks for the inspiration!!!!!! Keep on dancing!!!!!!
Perhaps the video did need some more editing but these are students so what a great way to learn. I do however admire those students that clearly stepped out of their comfort zone and nailed it.
Its been more than four years since this video first aired, and I still come back to watch it. He is incredible! This must have taken months to come together so perfectly! I also love the inclusion of EVERYONE! This video just makes me so happy!
The thing I love most about this vid is that EVERYBODY was included. Not just the students who were awesome at dancing...but even the guys who looked liked they'd been hijacked from the computer science room. Any teacher who does that deserves double thumbs up. And triple thumbs up for the students who just made this song come alive. Love this vid!
I'm so glad Bruno Mars saw this wonderful and fantastic video! It even made him cry! Beautiful job Scot Panki and the students at A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School!
Great Job Mr. Pankey and the wonderful students at A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School! I hope Mark Ronson, Uptown Funk and Bruno Mars see this video and perform this song at your school! The video was excellent!
It's already reached Bruno Mars who tweeted a link to the video. That would be very cool and rewarding for Bruno, Mark, and the Hooligans to perform at their school!
About 2 minutes in, there's a young man with a walker on the right side of the screen (stage left). He is really getting into the music! Way to go dude, let the good times roll! You're awesome!
Kudos to a teacher with a work ethic like this and a desire to invest so much time into the lives of his students. Keep up the great work, Scot. We need more teachers like you!
I went there from 98-02 and so much looks like the same but a lot has changed. Still seems like just yesterday though! So much nostalgia. Sad that it's no longer A. Maceo Smith HS but I have nothing but good memories.
So I admit that I have watched this video WAY TOO MANY times!! As a veteran educator, I can say that this man is a gift to the field of education. Sometimes we have to get past the books, lectures and tests. Back in the day I choreographed some of my students and they performed for PTA to standing ovations. What the audience did not know is that I had used the songs to do lessons in Language Arts, Math, Reading, Writing and Science. I can not help but believe that there was way more education behind this performance that we actually see. As a current employee of Dallas ISD, I am honored and proud that our district has teachers like Scot Pankey teaching our kids. I can't wait to see what the future holds for this educator and his students!!
I think that is THE BEST video on social media, and I have nothing BUT accolades for that awesome teacher and the most awesome students!! Kudos to you all!!
