This is a great western. Dark action, nobody is perfect, beautiful woman falls for a good man who had a hard life. Oh and the bad guys were polished and sneaky but got it in the end. Crime didn’t pay…except for the sherif who changed his ways…we hope.
A year later, WARD BOND would perform his greatest role in THE SEARCHERS. Mary Murphy used masterful facial expressions in this Western, & is quite lovely, to boot ! 🤠
Totally true: an underrated gem of a movie indeed! I love it. What a great debut for Milland as a director. I own this on Blu-ray and will watch it many times.
Every one of these movies has the walking in the desert man, or men, throwing away their csnteens when empty. They are never kept to be refilled if and when possible. They do the same with hats they lose for what ever reason, especially when also in head roasting desert conditions.
Yeah, and in reality, they are usually 18, 19, 20, 21 years young, or younger. At that time, women did not work out like they do today. So, by the time most women have a child they start to look like hell.
There was a time when I googled all the gorgeous women guest stars on Gun Smoke, Bonanza, etc and most were teenagers with perfect faces, flat tummies, perfect skin....
Well worth watching. Yes, it has most of the western cliches but it also has fine acting and some twists that you have probably never seen before. Overall, it deserves a rating of at least 7.5 or maybe even an 8. You won’t feel you waisted your time by enjoying this movie. The music and cinematography were also better than the usual fare.

Then along came food manufacturing pumping carbs and poison into all the food and POP! GOES THE WEASEL! EVERYONE now has a fatty liver with tons of spillover! Thank you Nestles and Dupont and all you all.
I watch a bunch of medical videos and can't be bothered with so many commercials so I pay Google the 10 smackers to be commercial-free. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it, but thanks to your comment I think I will quit thinking about it. Thank you! 🤜🤛
Lee van Cleef, Decorated Marine in WWII.Many of these great character actors were in the Marine Corp. Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Audie Murphy, most decorated soldier of WWII. Bad dudes playing themselves, love all of them, grew up watching them. Thank you for your service Gentleman!
It's surprising that Raymond Burr had a relationship for 35 years with his partner, Robert Benevides. One of the best kept secrets in Hollywood but he was still a great actor, especially in Perry Mason and of course, Ironside.
The only cactus that you can safely drink water from is the fishhook barrel cactus, but you should only use it as a water source in an emergency situation.
Sorry. Having Ray Milland trying to portray a rough, tough cowboy is like having Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy) trying to portray John Wayne. Wrong person. Period. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
The man first killed his innocent horse that carried him for hundreds of miles and then killed a rattle snake in the desert in its natural habitat and what sort of a name Mary is for a man anyway? But wait he is a kind man too and he fed a hungry cat and her kittens. Anyway to say something positive it’s a good movie even though the plot is very simple. I can’t believe it’s the most watched movie in that time.
A Man Alone 1955. Stranded in the desert, gunfighter Wes Steele (Ray Milland) comes across the gory aftermath of a stagecoach robbery in which all the victims were murdered in cold blood. Taking one of the stagecoach's horses to ride into the next town, Steele finds himself accused of the robbery by the hotheaded sheriff's deputy (Alan Hale) while the sheriff (Ward Bond) is ill with yellow fever. With the help of the sheriff's daughter (Mary Murphy), Steele fights to clear his name.
The most watched movie of its time? I strongly doubt that! It came out the same year as "Mr. Roberts," "Guys and Dolls," "Oklahoma!," and "Magnificent Obsession." It's a conventional and watchable film, but it deserves being otherwise obscure and neglected. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁
I'm sorry, after seeing 15 minutes of this slop i had to change it. There is nothing like watching. Spaghetti westerns. But i do say one thing, its better then any garbage now a days.
This started well but finished in darkness and shadows, I can’t see anything, just gasps, groans, shadows, what is this supposed to be? It’s disappointing.
Ray Milland looked older than Ward Bond to me. I'd rather seeing Burt Lancaster play his part. But it is a pretty good western. Ray just looks too soft to be playing a part like this. Just one man's opinion.
@@carlreed6186 yes Sir I’ve tried it several times. I even keep a few on hand to train dogs with. Guessing do to their main diet of mice and rats it probably taints the meat some.
All the Western clichés in the 1st 5 minutes, lost in the desert, eating fake Saquaro Cacti, shooting a rattlesnake for no reason, coming upon Innocent travelers massacred. 3 out of 10!
He saws the reins to roll the horse. It sustains a profusely bleeding wound in soft sand. He leaves his rifle behind. He leaves his canteen behind, so he has nothing to carry water if he finds some. He sits on the ground with his elbow within inches of a cactus, not even on the shady side. He cuts a piece of cactus from the main trunk, instead of a nearby arm and eats it, a bad idea for thirst! He wastes a bullet on a snake he could easily skirt. He chases all the horses away instead of leading them to the nearest town. He's totally oblivious to the approach of a gun with a gun drawn when he arrives in town. I can't watch any more.
