Hi Roz, Thank you so much for participating in Mental Health May by listening to "Poyums" I'm trying to encourage people to talk about mental health all year to help end the stigma around mental illness. I read "Of Human Bondage" while visiting Paris last year when I was laid up with COVID in Paris last year. I loved it and knew it was good because I had a high fever and still couldn't put it down. Aloha friend.

Len Pennie has a powerful voice. I love her Instagram, but I can see how listening to her read several of her poems in a row could be overwhelming. Wandering Stars was very good. I didn’t live Brotherless Night, but it is a deserving winner. James is my book of the year so far.

Yes I loved Poyums and her passion, but should maybe have read the text and just listened to a few. I could feel the quality of James and can see how it could hit top spot for you. I must read Trees soon. Wandering Stars was striking as an ambitious novel that worked.

Hi Ros! When I was listening to Poyums, the declamatory quality of her performance affected my experience too; I listened to it in short bits, a few poems at a time. Like you, I very much appreciated her use of Scots language. Polyphonic voices are a draw for me too, so that was one of many aspects I loved about Wandering Stars. I enjoyed James even more, however. Its playful quality combined with its serious subject, and the layer of retelling- it surprised and delighted me and it’s one of my top reads of 2024 so far.

I loved her voice and understood her strength of feeling but sometimes I wanted to hear the poem itself more as her writing is great. Very glad to have found her thanks to you. James is such a fine book so I was reflecting on why it wasn't a perfect fit for me and concluded it was the humour. Steve read it too and it was spot on for him.

Oh your kitten is so sweet!! Don't we always make their comfort the seating priority 😂 I didn't know if I should read Huck Finn before James? I tried but gave up really quickly due to the racism, I couldn't stomach it. I really liked constellations by Sinead Gleason. Loved brotherless night.

@@YourTrueShelf he is an utter poppet. I think it helps to have an idea of Huck Finn to get the maximum out of James. If you have had a taster, maybe read a plot summary too and that will be enough. Don't need to have read the whole thing. I will try to get to Constellations.

Ros! I was starting to get worried where you were after three weeks and no videos. Glad to hear you were just on holiday and looks like you got a tan too! I think I am now officially the only person on Booktube to have not read Braiding Sweetgrass but I will…eventually. I have fond memories of reading The Canterbury Tales at college, so much more accessible, and funny, than I thought it would be. I have one Elizabeth Bowen book on my shelf, The Death of the Heart which I’m assuming is a later one. Your enthusiasm for her writing has made me think I should pick it up sooner rather than later.

Thanks Jo. I hoped to record a bit whilst I was away but it didn't prove doable so I did rather disappear. Yes Canterbury Tales was so enjoyable and the more I stuck with it, the more accessible it felt. Death of the Heart is mid period Bowen (1938) and one of her best I think.

What a variety! I haven’t read Len Penne, but I look forward to hearing about your time with Chaucer. I finished Kimmerer too, and “repetitive” is very apt. I’d have liked the book better if it were reduced by a third.

I think it may be a better experience reading Kimmerer over a period of time rather as a cover to cover type of book. I dipped in & out over the period of a summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. Dark comedy is an apt description of Everette’s style! 😄 The Trees is a work of devastating comedy. I still think about it.

Hey Roz, I'm going to do a reading round-up of May and June, since I only finished 2 things in May. Anyway, great reading month for you by the sound of it. I think those nonfiction books seem. Right now I'm reading "Strangers On a Train" by Patricia Highsmith, "The Turn of the Key" by Ruth Ware and "Thinking In Pictures" by Temple Grandin.

@@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711 It's very interesting so far. I've followed Temple on and off since I was a teenager, so about half my life. I think a fair amount of what she says makes sense. Maybe I should review it on my other channel when I'm done. I'll finish "Turn of the Key" by Ruth Ware today.
