And yet, on another channel, one commenter was blowing up that the reactor was talking about the song and not just glowing about the singer! I'm with you though.
Through my life...I pretty much watched the rise of David Bowie and loved him through all his multiple phases. I was a young girl of 14 when I first discovered him in a Melody Maker magazine and thought he was the most fascinating entertainer I'd ever seen. I'm now 65 and he still mesmerizes me to this day. I hate knowing he's no longer with us and creating his magic. Gone way too soon. Great video reaction!!
Bought this single by accident as a 11 yr old. I thought I was buying 2001 a space odyssey lol. Took it home a pop it on the record player and am like wtf. 😳 who the hell is this. Then I started listening and said wow not bad. Would sit in my dark bedroom with this playing dreaming I was major Tom 😎
You should listen to "Ashes to Ashes" (where Major Tom makes another appearance). Also, you might want to check out Bowie's song "Black Star" (the official video). Major Tom appears in that one too. It warms my heart to see a young person learning to love Bowie. I am 67 years old and have been listening to him since 1969. I still have original vinyl pressings of his albums, bought so many, many years ago.
“That’s why we listen to music.” Brilliant reaction to the masterwork of a true musical genius. A Day in the Life reference. Wow. Might be the best reaction video I’ve seen.
You would be richly rewarded by just going track by track through all Bowie's albums as the breadth and scope of his work will delight and astound you. His ability to change his look, his sound and his insatiable search for growth and education is unique in the world. David is the rarest of artists, a polished, unique, unfettered music will only inspire and nourish your appreciation of all musical genres. Can't you tell I love him - but his work is phenomenal - best reaction to one of his songs ever - don't just do the singles or just the popular stuff - the album tracks are magnificent.
To have never heard Bowie before?? Wow! I've always loved his music and was fortunate to see him perform live. A legend, and a wonderful back catalogue to explore.
You should do a Bowie Marathon just as you did for Zeppelin. There are so many incredible Bowie Songs, many of which I have not seen any reactions for on youtube.
Great reaction..made me emotional about a song I've heard thousands of times... I was you in 1976. Some personal Bowie favorites- Width of a Circle Bewlay Brothers Rock and Roll Suicide Starman (try to watch video from Top of the Pops- great moment in rock history) Life on Mars (video is a must also) Lady Stardust Sweet Thing/Candidate Drive-in Saturday Young Americans Station to Station Wild is the Wind Stay Win Fantastic Voyage Sons of the Silent Age Sound and Vision Blackstar
Bowie is my favorite artist of all time. You’ ve quite a musical journey ahead of you! Try Station to Station, Moonage Daydream, Aladdin Sane, the man who sold the world, Ashes to Ashes, so many great songs. Bowie did two sequels to Space Oddity, Ashes to ashes and Black Star... but watch the videos that accompany them, so much artistry!
plus a stripped down acoustic version of space oddity in 1979. The video premiered on Kenny Everrits TV show at midnight 31 dec 1979, seeing in the new decade. Shades of that video appeared in Ashes later in the year, and also shades of The Man who Fell to Earth in the 1979 /1980 video. actually the video I posted link to heer has been edited to include Ashes scenes which came months later. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z5wMEqEuTTA.html
David Bowie’s catalog is real deep... all his albums sound different... in other words this is one deep rabbit hole. “Ashes to ashes funk to funky we know Major Toms a junkie”
Good choices! I rarely recommend Live performances as a first exposure to a song, but the BBC video of "Five Years" is sublime! The slow drum intro and outro are so visceral. In a time of Pandemics and Climate Change, the song was never more emotionally relevant.
There are sooo many from Bowie to recommend! "Stay" from Station To Station is a personal fave. Those amazing vocals of his, and rippin' lead guitar! The song "Station To Station" kicks ass as well! Then he REALLY shows off his vocals on "Wild Is The Wind". And of course anything from Ziggy Stardust. Oh, I could go on and on!
Every album up to and including Scary Monsters. Plus Blackstar. You'll get the whole Major Tom story. I actually teared up a bit watching this, seeing the power of recognition for an artist who shaped my life. I'm so grateful for his music. I love your comments. Hope you enjoy your path of discovery too.
If you can do some of his songs from his Ziggy Stardust days such as Ziggy Stardust and Rebel Rebel...also his song Heroes is a gorgeous creation also!
I love watching people react to the stereo effects in this song. People who try to listen to it with a shared set of headphones (which I truly don't understand) miss so much!
Props to you for appreciating a song 60 plus years old. You also undetstand the meaing of the song because Bowie was facinated with idea of space travel. I have always loved this Bowie song.
I hope you became a true Bowie fan!! There's a lot of music of his out here on YT, I recommend all of it!! It's sad he left us so soon, he was one of a kind. RIP David!! 😥
Emmanuel, I love that your generation is listening to and analyzing the music I took for granted. Bowie was ahead of his time during the 60's, 70's, 80's ... till he died recently. Again, I appreciate that you're listening to a true genius and not some pseudo genius of a lot of contemporary music. Best wishes on your voyage to Bowie. Almost every one of his albums is incredible. Pick any one of his albums and you'll hear the magic. I'm going to subscribe to your channel and watch your videos. Right on Mr. Flores., right on.
Kudos to you Emmanuel for really getting at its fullest extent and just that one first hearing, the greatness not just of this masterpiece, but that of the full body of work by the Spaceman during his time with us in this plane of existence. I will recommend ya "Five Years", "Rock'n Roll Suicide" ,."Wild is the wind" and "Lazarus". Only to begin with. Bye for now and keep up the grand acknowledging.
If you want to hear a song with a lot of contrast to this one, please react to Win from his album Young Americans. It was one of his all-time favorite tracks he ever recorded and it's absolutely beautiful.
Also, I'd like to recommend songs that are equally masterful. As the World Falls Down Letter to Hermione The Drowned Girl Look Back in Anger Teenage Wildlife
You are right that this one goes dark, as does much of Bowie's work (the better pieces are semi-autobiographical). Try "The Man Who Sold the World," "Aladdin Sane," "Sweet Thing/Candidate," "My Death," "Rock and Roll Suicide," "Wild Is the Wind," "Scary Monsters," "Cat People," "Dead Man Walking" - and if you ever react to an entire album, both _Aladdin_ _Sane_ and _Diamond_ _Dogs_ are breathtaking trips.
Bowie's first love was musical theatre, he is a frustrated musical writer, and what he couldn't achieve in musical theatre he packed into his songwriting and performances, creating epic stories and characters like Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke, Aladdin Sane, The Lone Alien, Pierrot, The Blind Prophet not to mention his acting roles... A lot of people don't realise his hero was Anthony Newley who wrote Stop The World I want To Get Off, Scroge and most famously Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (candy Man was a huge hit for him). Bowie's vocal style is modeled on Newley's style. That's why Bowie was so creative, he wanted to write musicals and tell stories through his songs, so not being able to do that in the theatre he did it through pop music and his live performances.
David Bowie was way ahead of his time. He didn't reach mass appeal until his first pop album in the 1980s. Go down the Bowie rabbit hole because you'll love it. The song was inspired by the classic Kubrick movie, Space Odessey.
45 years ago I visited for the first time a Bowie concert. As a young musician I felt his talent and his incredible universe of music. I'm glad, to see you Emmanuel, reacting on Bowie's different layers of Art. Over the decades I discovered a lot of his hidden music jewels. They are not so popular but not less good. If you like, I'll give you a title or two.
A true genius. You'll find that Major Tom makes an appearance in later songs too, up to the last album of his life. I won't list those 3 or more songs here but will leave that a mystery, as you will certainly be hooked into this exploration of Bowie.
Emmanuel, I cannot express my level of enjoyment at your reaction to, Space Oddity. Music at the time of Bowie’s ascension was truly made up of ‘other worldly talents’, which made for spellbinding listening in many genres. David had enormous creativity and production skills, to bring about the emotions you experienced. Your sincerity was obvious and heartfelt, great job.
You could jump into any period of Bowie's journey and find songs just as powerful, sad, uplifting. That's how amazing he was. He was my musical education and teacher from being a 12 year old arty kid in 1976 who suddenly found his tribe.
LIke your´´e reaction. Love you!! I´m so pleased!!! I´m many years older than you. I suppose. I heard it when I was around 13 or so. 1969 Was the first moon landing. Yes I love this song since. An evergreen.
Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures!
Welcome to Bowie. If you're looking for a perfect duo, see David Bowie and Bing Crosby doing Little Drummer Boy. I remember when this song aired. It has stayed with me as a beautiful pairing of the most disparate men. So completely different in approach but completely perfect together.
This came out around the time of the Moon landings and after the release of the movie 2001 A Space Oddesy.... So many people thought it was going to be a time of frequent space travel.... But alas... We're still mostly all here.
You make me cry... I first heard it in 1974... couldn't believe my ears then... been a lifelong Bowie fan since... until the day i join major Tom Life On Mars up next... cue it up!
Great reaction! Bowie never stays in one place musically which I love. This is early Bowie and he goes from more acoustic to rockers, to soul, to avant-garde artist. I personally love the many changes he goes through. Life On Mars, Rock and Roll Suicide, Lady Grinning Soul, Stay, Station to Station ....that gives you a good smattering of his talent. The sequel to this song is "Ashes to Ashes" although they are completely different song styles.
The thing to know about Bowie's music is that it does not stand still... Indeed, he was so ahead of his time that by the time everyone else was about to catch up, he'd have moved on, renewing, adapting his style to new ideas, new concepts. A truly brilliant man!
It's nice to see younger generations getting into David Bowie. This is one of my favorite Bowie songs. It came out when I was a small child and I didn't hear it until I was in college. The song blows me away. Heroes is a good one too.
Bowie would appreciate your reaction, posting my reply it was 54 years after it was written, and people still marvel at the song writing and production.
Amazing reaction. I was ten when this came out. I heard it a million times. But your reaction, not the song, made me cry. Understand in 1969, space exploration was something the was hole family gathered around the TV to watch. The countdown, the walk in space, landing and walking on the moon. David Bowie recreated himself over and over. At 13, I had Ziggy Stardust pictures in my freshman high school locker. He was innovative, experimental and mysterious. But his message was consistent. Be who you were meant to be. His music spans almost 50 years so picking songs is hard but my all time favorite is the live performance of Heroes. There are a few versions out but my fav is Berlin 2002. Thank you for reminding me why my generation has the best music…. EVER. ❤️
It was a stab to my heart when he died. This song is about his alter ego....drug addiction. He was masterful in painting a picture of space and so on but he struggled with drug addiction...he overcame but never forgot about his struggle yet in his last years he struggled with cancer. He is so missed !
