None of today's GM can calculate; take risk like Tal. He was something out of this world.

It does not matter if Tal is a piece or two down, every one of his pieces serves three functions. Incredible.

Sir who is or was the best player in the history of chess in your views. Sir pl reply

I think every great player was best in their era but experts consider Fischer, Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen as the strongest but my personal favorites are Mikhail Tal, Morphy, Capablanca, Pillsbury, Emanuel Lasker, Steinitz, Alekhine, Fischer and Kasparov.

You'll always get these names: Kasparov, Fischer, Tal, Morphy, Alekhine, Carlsen. Any of them could be considered the greatest. Karparov and Carlsen are probably the all round greatest. Although Fisher in 1971-1972 dominated in a manner never seen before (and will never seen again.) 1 world championship isn't enough to make Fischer the greatest though. The all time greatest player's are probably Carlsen and Kasparov. Take your pick between them.
