Thank you Pastor Brett for finding the courage to speak and the wisdom to do it with candour and humility. Becoming educated and aware of the plight of black people who are facing racism on a daily basis is a good starting point. Looking into our own hearts and asking the Lord to restore the sight of our own blindness. Reaching out to the Lord who himself suffered are all great words of advice. Thanks for sharing! #wearepeoples united by the blood the Jesus!

Pastor Brett, you as a white person speaking into this issue is much appreciated. It's the silence that would have been despairing.

Thank you. Acknowledging there is a problem is the first step to solving the problem. As a person of colour it’s been heartbreaking watching the coverage and seeing the video of George Floyd, but it has been heartening to see people of all ethnicities coming together to demand justice. The church will have a critical role where our lives model the love of God and help move us all forward to a more just world.

One other thing which I think that makes People’s Church well positioned to lead in this effort is the diversity of the congregation, in the times before covid (bc 😄) one of the striking things walking into the sanctuary is seeing people from every nation sitting side by side. We as the congregation are children of God and equal in his sight.

Thx for your sharing Pastor Brett! Any recommendation on Christian Organizations that support the African Canadian Community? Would love to support them either through volunteer work or financial means. Thx lots!

Great question Karen! We too want to listen to, learn from and support our sisters and brothers. We will be sharing more in the coming weeks as we lean into this crucial conversation together as a church.

People say "All lives matter" downplays "Black lives matter". Which claim is more biblical though?
@noreenedwards5243

Black people have been suffering racism for over 400 years. We have been treated less than human as if our lives aren’t worth anything. Our lives are just as precious as any other race. We are made in the image of God like any other race. As Christians we should stand up for justice. That’s what the Bible teaches.

the issue is not really on skin but on sin. Total depravity of man leads to corrupt practices. We need to advance all the more the gospel of salvation and of repentance so that people would realize that 'all have sinned & fallen short of God's glory' & we need Jesus & the Holy Spirit to change lives - from living in darkness to light, to a new creation that is pleasing to God Almighty!

That specific issue was about skin colour. We know behind it is a sinful act that speaks to the plight of blacks in the USA. We need to acknowledge the wrong that was done. Preaching around it takes away the horror of the act itself and offers no comfort to the hurting.

Frankly "I can't breathe" is just a claim of the fact that he physically could not breathe at that moment. You put so much thoughts and emotions with your own imagination, not his. How could he possibly think all those stuff while his life was at stake? I am saying this has nothing to do with the protest, I just can't agree with such delusional preaching. I have seen enough, cannot believe Peoples Church becomes one of those.

I agree. It was just a plea for oxygen. Pastor Brett should not have given religious, racial or socio-economoc connotation out of it.

I also cant believe he is into politics...and that of our neighbors down south. We are perfectly ok here in canada. Oh i got it. The BLM co founder was the one who actively set up black activicism in this country. The Peoples Church actually participated last tuesday by posting in its facebook a totally black photo with hastag blackouttuesday w.c is a silent protest against the US cops. I am into a peaceful demonstration of fight against racism and bigotry but to associate one self with a left wing/godless group is too much. Im out of PC. Thank you for the 5 years.

@@josettedc703 with all due respect nothing he said suggested he was siding with BLM. Black out Tuesday was the music industries idea not BLM. Everyone else decided to take part. It was a time they set aside to stop all activities and reflect on how to bring change. He pointed out that he has worked with individuals who have been oppressed and understand the pain the brutality has caused a lot of the young ones he has worked with. Is it wrong to stop and reflect?

@JosetteDC. We are all involved in politics whether we are aware of it or not. And your statement that we are ok in Canada is a pipe dream. Racism is alive and well in Canada. Been here for 44 years and could tell you some stories. Also what Pastor Brett said is not wrong. I believe he is quoting the words to express the depth at which raciam is destroying many lives. I am sorry that you feel you have to leave PC because you disagree with Pastor Brett. I would suggest that you prayfully consider if that is what God wants you to do before you leave.

@JosetteDC I've been trying all night to figure out what to say in response to your comment, in a way that would not displease God, or embarass PC. And then I read this. While it is meant to address the goings on in Hong Kong, the Biblical response is the same. Christianity Today shared this on Facebook today. The following is from "an open letter drafted by evangelical pastors, theologians, and parachurch leaders and signed by more than 2,400 Christians in Hong Kong: “The church is neither a political party or a political organization, therefore, political agendas or demands should not become the main focus of the church. However, when facing injustice and evilness in the society, the church should act as the social conscience and fulfil [sic] its prophetic role to denounce injustice, to proclaim the will of God, and to bear witness to truth.” I would add "love others as yourself."
