Llevo 8 años viviendo aquí en México, llegue a las 15 años. Los años más formativos de mi vida he pasado aquí. Me CAGA cuando los gringos dicen que son expats. Soy un migrante, vine de otro país buscando mejor calidad de vida y lo encontré aquí. Me siento identificada con este video, al fin alguien ha puesto en palabras muchos de mis pensamientos y las cosas como son.
Especialmente los Mexicanos que dicen tonterías como: "Ya eres mexican@", "ya denle su ciudadanía", "eres más mexican@ que el chile", "los Mexicanos nacemos donde se nos da la xxxx gana" sin siquiera comprender lo que es México, sin salir de vacaciones fuera del país para que comparen lo que significa vivir México por dentro y por fuera Mucho Mexicano que le gusta ser menoscabado
Solo si dan el dolal, si no dan el dolal, van al tambo, a la bañera de hielo o las niñas y mujeres a Tijuana...a veces los hombres también pero más a Cancún a satisfacer a sus degenerados compatriotas

I couldn't agree more. My husband and I are immigrants here in Mexico and try to always remember that we are guests in this beautiful country that has been our home for almost 4 years now. We are always learning new things about our adopted homeland, its people, languages, and customs... and our lives are richer for it.

Me casé con una mexicana y vivimos en un lugar donde no hay gringos. Cuando llegué aquí, inicialmente, me reuní un grupo de "Expats" en Facebook, pero después de un poquito de tiempo, me di cuenta de que no me gustan la mayoría de esas personas en ese grupo. Muchos son muy feos y muy narcisistas. He leído donde los demás en ese grupo mencionaron el lugar donde vivo como si fuera una broma de sugerencia para vivir, y todos siempre se enojan. Pero es mi hogar ahora. También, no me considero un expatriado sino un inmigrante. Me encanta el idioma español y la cultura mexicana. Es un buen lugar para vivir, especialmente cuando alguien aprende el idioma y se asimila a la cultura.
@@carlingas666 Yo vine a México para enseñar inglés y conocí a mi esposa aquí en México. Me enamoré de ella, y luego nos casamos. Mi esposa no tiene una visa para ir a Estados Unidos. Hemos tratado de obtener una visa muchas veces, pero la embajada de Estados Unidos en México sigue negándole una visa, entonces tomamos la decisión para quedarnos aquí en México. Evidentemente México me acepta más que mi propio país está dispuesto a aceptarla.
Soy suizo y tengo más de 10 años viviendo en México. Después de 4 años de haber llegado me casé con una chica mexicana y hace 2 años adquirí la nacionalidad mexicana. Tengo una empresa con un socio mexicano y la mayoría de mis amigos son de aquí, así que estoy muy integrado al país y a su cultura y aunque el español no es mi primer idioma mi mujer dice que hablo y escribo mejor que muchos mexicanos. 😂 En fin, México es un lugar fantástico y estoy feliz de poder ser parte de esta tierra. Incluso, mi hermano menor vino a verme hace 3 años y se quedó. Ahora tiene novia mexicana y trabaja como diseñador gráfico para una empresa local, así que también está haciendo su vida aquí. I've never treated a non native speaker that way. I've always been happy to help people learn English. It's not easy. I don't understand people who are mean and don't just try to help. It's like when you have a kid and are trying to figure out what they are saying and help them find the right words.
You haven’t, which is fine. But in the US, usually at Walmarts for some reason, you always see people super mad when someone doesn’t speak English properly.
Yeah there are nice people, but there are also people that gets super triggered by people not talking in english. Whatever happened to the land of the free I don't try to understand anymore.

Thank you for this video! I think the worst part is the lack of humility, I think the main reason everyone hates Americans is because they feel superior to other countries when they aren’t. I’m in the top 1% even by US standards and I could live literally anywhere in the world, but I still believe Mexico is the best country. The people are honest, warm, the food is excellent, the biodiversity, the beaches, the weather, etc. Make it the best country in the world in my eyes. (And I’ve been to more than 30 countries). So when Americans come here thinking that they are superior, it’s awful! Besides the propaganda, the US is in a social decline, the food is awful, most Americans gossip and lie, most cities look the same, housing and healthcare are extremely expensive and I just wonder why anyone would like to live there, they are brainwashed. Americans think that they are here to free the world when in reality all the countries they “free” just end up much worse.

Emigré a México hace 7 años para escapar de los Estados Unidos y disfrutar de una mejor vida en México. Me reí mucho cuando mencionaste a Sayulita. Mi esposa y yo venimos a Sayulita desde hace 25 años y nos mudamos aquí de forma permanente para unirnos a la familia. Sayulita ha cambiado. Ahora queremos vender nuestra casa y mudarnos a Morelia o a Guadalajara para escapar nuevamente de los gringos.
Creo que otro problema mostrado con muchos gringos en México es que dicen los mexicanos están acostumbrados a ganar poco, así que nosotros también les vamos a pagar poco, he conocido historias de las sra. Que ayuda a mi madre con la limpieza y dice, tu madre es la que mejor me paga, le hago la limpieza a unos gringos y me pagan lo normal y no le dan vacaciones pagadas o aguinaldo, cosa que mi madre si le da, y dices.. "oye, ganas en dólares y sabemos que estás aquí porque tú dinero rinde más, y quieres tener una buena vida, pero esa persona que trabaja para ti, también quiere tener una buena vida igual que tú, paguen lo justo, por eso igual mucha gente se enoja con ese tipo de personas", lo de hablar mal de México, pues si, lo he escuchado mucho cuando voy a un café y piensan que todos los mexicanos solo hablamos español, creo que no comprenden que si hay gente en México que entiende y habla el inglés, muy de mal gusto.

Pero somos mexicanos a todo le encontramos solución y sabemos sacar ventaja de ello. Por ejemplo mi abuelo tiene departamentos en renta pero les da precio inflado a extranjeros mientras que a la gente local no, igualmente yo tengo un restaurante y les doy precio distinto a extranjeros. Es nada ético pero es una medida cuánto más interesante para la gentrificacion.

Vivo en Puerto Vallarta y es increíble que todos los turistas vienen a hacer su desmadre creyendo que pueden pasarse por encima de nuestros derechos, nuestros valores y nuestros territorios, sólo por la tonta idea de que por su dinero valen más que nosotros o que son superiores a nosotros. Yo misma he tenido que exigir mí respeto cuando un extranjero me trata mal, incluso se ofenden que se los encare. Go anywhere else in the world... Anyone needs to adapt to the cultures and environment, especially learning the local language. And yes thats what the Mexican audience needs to gear actually. People that move in and to actually contribute. Otherwise they can go back where they come from.

I looked through his videos and he comes across as a quasi-grifter. You see this with some Americans who move to China. They constantly are hyper-critical of USA but praise China to no end in order to get praise from thier Chinese audience.. This isn't exactly the same but similar. How many do you have living under one roof? How many of the US citizens living in Mexico can you walk up to standing on the corner and get dope from? How many of your friends or family were casualties of drug overdose? Has a "gringo" ever stole your car? Robbed you? Or jumped you with their homey flashing his gun? Soy Mexicana juntando para una casa y acabo de ver un video de una “nomada” Estadounidense que compró una casa “cash” en Sayulita y no sé explicar el sentimiento que me provocó. Su explicación fue “it feels like home.” Me pregunto si lo siente así por la facilidad que le da su privilegio y estatus social superior en un país donde ni siquiera tiene noción de sus tradiciones y no habla el idioma (y lo sé porque me fui en todo un viaje por su canal de RU-vid). Para colmo aparte de todo va rentar el lugar, obvio compitiendo con lugares de personas locales. Not sure if you can read english but I cannot write in spanish. I am born and raised in arizona my family is from sonora, same thing happened here. They have been moving here for years and screwed up our economy. You used to be able to live in a nice neighborhood anywhere in town but recently all the snowbirds and digital nomads have been buying the houses in cash dropping a million no problem. Most of my family cant afford to live in nice neighborhoods anymore and being forced to move back to the barrios where crime and drugs are rampant but housing is cheap. I spoke to a neighbor who just moved in and bragged he has a house in California, Arizona, and Montana He is only here a few months so the house usually just sits empty, however my cousin cant leave the barrio because there is nothing available for a working class person where I live. It's really sad they are going down to Mexico and doing the same thing.

What a wonderful surprise to stumble across your RU-vid! I live in a very rural part of Jalisco and one of two gringos that live here all year. While Spanish is still a struggle, I find it easier with time. Thank you for the reality check as most of these sites act as if we are still in the States, but just visiting mexico when we are, in fact, immigrants.

Apparently I am a year late to watch this, not sure if you will see this comment. I have been married to my wife who moved here to the USA, after visiting her family in Northern Mexico and getting to know the culture more, I have become increasingly interested in moving there. Because of this I have really tried to open my eyes and mind to how much we as Americans have been... conditioned? brainwashed? into believing we are God's gift to the world. When obviously it's the opposite. That's also another reason I'm wanting to leave. I really enjoyed this video, funny you mention about streets being named after people, because I do often wonder who those people are whenever I am down there and I see streets named after specific people. Getting a 2nd language down is difficult but not impossible. Just remember as child (pre-school/kindergarten), you learnt 26 strange symbols without a problem (the alphabet). Read children books (then to basic literature, e.g. Mary Higgens Clark, easy read), cartoons, and watch telenovelas which will help you enormously. You can do it, believe in yourself :)

My wife and I relocated to Morelia, Michoacan two years ago. She's Mexican and I'm from Reno, Nevada. I agree with you. Our life here has been amazing thus far. The culture, architecture, the wonderful people, and of course, the food. I've never been made to feel unwelcome in Mexico. We're surrounded by my wife's family, and am included in everything. As far as crime goes, I've never felt unsafe in Mexico. I know it exists here, but we've never been victimized. I felt less safe in many of the cities in the US. We live well, entirely on my Social Security income. It's at least affordable here, which is increasingly more difficult in the states. We have a nice home, but not in an "expat" enclave. In fact we opened up an extra bedroom so our nephew can tutor struggling grade school kids, during the week. It's proven to be the best move I've ever made! VIVA MEXICO 🇲🇽
Igual, mexicanos en canada, hay muchos trabajos que no piden inglés pero eso es en parte para hacernos las cosas mas faciles y porque necesitan trabajadores inmediatos. Pero no está mal, si tienes la oportunidad de trabajar allá, de INTENTAR, aprender inglés. Ningún nacional de otro país está obligado a aprender tu idioma. It was always his dream to become a Mexican citizen through his mother’s lineage and as two people who are self employed, the cost of living in the US had become impossible. We love living in Chihuahua City, not an expat enclave. I have been studying Spanish and getting many immersive chances to practice. The Mexican people have been kind, helpful and patient. Everyone is so warm and willing to help us learn how to do things, introduce us to the culture. Yes, things are different and I’ve privately had my moments of frustration, but I live in someone else’s country, it’s my responsibility divinity to adapt. It’s also our responsibility to give back, but soliciting small local businesses instead of the American chains. This is a form of colonization and we need to recognize our privilege !
I've been working in Customer Service for few years now and I can tell there is good, friendly easy-going people, but must of the time, we deal with entitled individuals (men and women) not just because it's concerning to what they've reached us for, but because they always find an opportunity to make derogatory remarks, to show rudeness, racism etc etc etc Chill out (bad) gringos :) Buen video Jeremy. Thank you for creating this video and raising awareness. I think you made many good points. It looks like I will be able to legally live the rest of my years out in Mexico with a an affordable rental. I am very thankful that the people and government of Mexico have made it possible for me to stay here when I have little money and a very modest income. I feel very fortunate that I can live here. I’m making an earnest effort to learn to speak Spanish and trying to be a good neighbor.

Spot on!!! I am slowly learning Spanish (older and still work full time) for when in Mexico, as it is their language and I enjoy talking with them and asking questions. When I try to speak spanish they are always very patient with me. I feel that even if you are a tourist and go to a country often, you should learn at least a few phrases in their language. And if you are going to complain about how things are done in another country - DON'T GO THERE! Thanks for saying what most people think!

A great video, and you are so right about everything. I am 64 years old, born in California. I have been an archaeologist here for 43 years. Understandably, as a (now) anthropologist, archaeologist and linguist, I started a immersing myself beginning at 16 when I first came to Mexico as an exchange student from high school. I knew then and there that I wanted to spend my life in this country. I have never regretted it for 1 second! But it is definitely not for everybody, and I feel sorry for those people that you talked about in those areas where just the ritzy Americans hang around strictly together and would not ever dream of using public transportation to get around (I think we should be clear though, that there are very wealthy Mexicans In Mexico City and other places who act just the same). My hometown here is very small , and I know everybody because I have been here so long. I truly don't think that anybody looks at me as a foreigner in any way, and even people who first meet me say I am more Mexican than a nopal because my Spanish and knowledge of the country is "pretty good" 😉, as it should be after all these years here and all the formal education I have had related to these topics. Like you, I married a Mexican and we have 2 beautiful children who are now in their 30s. Although they were also born in California, I brought them to Mexico when they were just infants and they are registered Mexican Nationals. They have never been back to the United States, and have no desire to go. Frankly, neither do I. I always feel like a fish out of water even around my own family, who don't understand why suddenly I can't remember words in English and things like that. They still think of me as a little kid I guess, the one that was raised there. I am so glad I stumbled onto your channel and I am now subscribed. People need to educate themselves and respect the country they live in, as well as, the citizens of such country.

I agree that humans should just respect each other because they are humans, but I think it is funny that you say Americans are showing "disrespect" towards people not speaking English in the US. So if I move to Mexico and people get irritated with me for not speaking Spanish is that them disrespecting me or me disrespecting them if I don't learn their language?

When I go to other countries I bring a language phrase book. I have never met anyone who expected people in a different country to speak English and they are generally surprised when they do. So far this video is just unsubstantiated propaganda. He used New York as an example of terrible rent pricing and said all US cities are trending in that direction, but Chicago remains affordable and offers a similar experience. My brother had a 700sqft apartment he rented for 950 from 2021-2023. Still available, one block from the shore just next to Loyolas campus. The US has urbanism problems, but cost of living is generally isolated to highly desirable parts of the east and west coast, not the country as a whole.

Excellent video. I'm Canadian and so far only come to Mexico as a tourist. However, I don't like the tourist resorts and usually stay in places where most tourists won't go. Speaking Spanish is essential for that, but the rewards are genuine connections. It's awesome.

My fiance is arab and Im mexican. We swore to never step on US soil. Both of us have been treated like plague and even wished death upon just for being born where we did. My parents were immigrants from Mexico. I grew up in NH until I was 16 when we moved to Aguascalientes. It was an interesting experience living here during that time. I was too stubborn to accept this new reality. I went to Texas for 2 years and tried to make a living but it was honestly pretty miserable. There was something about the atmosphere in Mexico that you just don’t get in the U.S. Realized how much I actually enjoyed the time and experiences I had in Mexico and did eventually find many opportunities with my English. Been here for almost 10 years now working remotely and building a life here. Needless to say I haven’t thought about going back since.

He vivido toda mi vida aquí y desafortunadamente a mis 40 años, ya es inviable adquirir un bien en esta ciudad que tanto quiero. Por cuestiones como la que mencionas de gentrificación, veo como se desvanece mi sueño de comprar un hogar en Ciudad de México y tener que mirar a otros lados como Querétaro, que si bien es un lugar mas accesible para la vivienda, las opciones laborales son muy mal pagadas a diferencia de las que hay en Ciudad de México. Te felicito por tan buen video y ojalá se haga eco de esto entre tus compatriotas norteamericanos.

Aquí en Mérida, Yucatán, hay mucho extranjero concentrándose en el Centro de la ciudad. Las rentas están por los cielos a raíz de este proceso de gentrificació que ya lleva su década o un poco más, al menos aquí en Yucatán.

La desventaja para el mexicano no es que los extranjeros se vengan a vivir aquí, porque ellos están ingresando dinero al país, el asunto es el control que el estado debe ponerle a las inmobiliarias, Airbnb y dueños de propiedadas que están elevando los precios

Están volviéndose locos comprando hasta a sobreprecio lugares en malas condiciones y/o edificios de apartamentos con personas que llevan décadas viviendo ahí, y de repente, les dan 30 días para que se vayan. I am grateful your video popped up in my scroll. I move to Mexico a year ago as a temporary resident. In preparation I watched videos and joined FB groups and was curious about the word expat. I did some research and found it even more curious how so many people, clearly not expats, use it! My goal was to learn spanish and move out of the ‘expat’ communities to somewhere more authentic and become part of the community. I move to San Cristóbal de kas Casas in two weeks. Although my Spanish is still extremely limited, I feel like surrounding myself in a more international city and indigenous region will support me in learning and understanding more about this magical country! And learning the language! My intention is to speak as fast and articulately in spanish as you. I thank you for your video and subscribed to your channel to remind and inspire me. 🙏
Can I ask you how are you learning Spanish, are you going to school, with private classes, via zoom? I live in Mexico City and I used to teach English to ESL students, but since English is not my native language I've been thinking that I should teach Spanish to the foreigners that have been moving to Mexico recently, but I want to find out what's more convenient for them. I hope you enjoy the real Mexico! It has ugly parts, but the food is worth it. And practice. Practice the language, almost everyone is patient to explain in their own language in here... Possibly no English speaker in that zone, but the communication is not always speaking.

En CDMX desde que hubo un flujo masivo de migrantes gringos a trabajar en home office, las rentas subieron exponencialmente y la estan pasando dificil aquellos foraneos estudiantes o profesionistas, yo vivo en Tamaulipas y vivo en frontera, tenemos muchos pochos eso si, gente que vivio 20-30 años en México y se hacen gringos pero ahora ni decirte "buenos días" en español pueden 😂, además, en sub-redidits de gringos viviendo en México siempre estan platicando de ir a vivir a CDMX, San Miguel de Allende, San cristóbal de las casas y Cancún.
Ahí es donde está fallando la PROFECO, se supone que dicha institución debe vigilar qué los precios de los productos y servicios no sean exorbitantes para que no afecte la economía general (llenarle la cartera a unos pocos y vaciarsela a muchísimos otros más).
@@flankerberkut1 la PROFECO es de papel y no tiene garras, no puede determinar precios ni mucho menos facultades que le permitan intervenir en acciones legales ni mucho menos intervenir en contratos entre particulares, solo puede darte una pantalla en 20 pesos por que un empleado se equivoco y hay gandallas que se aprovechan de eso.
Es un fenómeno inusual y se está presentando no solo en México sino en muchas partes del mundo, de hecho la CDMX es de las nuevas en sucederle. En Europa ya están tomando medidas contra Airbnb porque ellos son en gran medida causantes, no como promotores del hecho si no como herramienta digital que facilita encontrar lugares en renta pero provoca encarecimiento de precios. Se deben tomar medidas de inmediato, ojalá lo hagan.

Muchas gracias por este video, no sabes lo mucho que me duele haber escuchado gringos insistir que mi esposo por ser de EUA es “expat” no “inmigrante” cuando el mismo se llama así. Intentamos convivir con ese grupo por mucho tiempo en Merida, pero no me lleve mas que malas experiencias, sentía como me hablaban de forma condescendiente, se rehusaban a querer hablar español e inclusive hablaban de temas racistas o colonialistas abiertamente (“sin darse cuenta”) creo que mucha gente aquí entendemos que se van adecuando, y estamos para ayudar. Pero lo que molesta es ese sentido de superioridad y burbujas privilegiadas donde viven, es indignante que digan que es lo que merecemos cuando inmigrar a EUA ha sido bajo condiciones terribles, NO ES LO MISMO que inmigrar de EUA para acá.
Mérida, sobre todo en el centro historico, se sabe es uno caso terrible. Extranjeros queriendo pasar por sobre las personas y las leyes, al momento de comprar una casa historica tienen ciertas obligaciones que muchas veces las ignoran y terminan criticando al trabajador y citadino local. Algunos ya han recibido su merecido pero esto no logra que los demás aprendan. Lo peor es que son gente mayor con esas creecias superiores tan arraigadas a su cultura y por tanto se reusan a "cambiar". Los propios locales son los que al final piden que no se les den esas casas a los extranjeros, pero al final es negocio. Lo mismo que ponen en el video, están haciendo una burbuja de gringos con remodelaciones impagables para los locales. Están haciendo de su centro historico el centro para los jubilados gringos.

I'm English and been a 'Digital Nomad' for 7 years all over the world but have spent a lot of time in Mexico, primarily when I had a RU-vid channel (covering 23 states, especially in the north) and various other self-employed jobs. This video is spot on and what I've been saying for years but my views were of course very unpopular with Estadounidenses, and still are. One of the reasons I stopped it and became a UX Designer (and soon to be moving back to Europe - I'm also Polish) is the fact that geoarbitrage is simply unethical and wrong. However, Mexican property owners contribute to gentrification (I know 2 Chilangas who own over 20 properties in La Condesa and Roma alone) and the government doesn't make residency easy. I would only go back if was earning in pesos and was able to pay taxes in Mexico. Yes I speak Spanish although not fluently, but it's enough and I don't speak English at all in any Spanish-speaking country. How? Living in Iztapalapa, Torreón, Durango, Ciudad Obregón with local families, not in a boring overpriced immigrant enclave or coffin dodger morgue like SMA. Although mу RU-vid was travel focused and never about the outdated 'Moving to Mexico' theme, I still have guilt in contributing to the issue. Those couple channels promoting the 'expat' 🤮 lifestyle need to be deported if they're on a tourist visa and held accountable. If you have no intention of integrating fully, you don't belong. That goes for immigration in any country.

As a Mexican, you are right to point out that landlords (both local and foreign) contribute a lot to gentrification. In fact, to me, they are the ones that bear the most guilt on this subject. Rent control needs to be implemented in México, and all over the world NOW!!

Soy mexicano y antes quería irme del país, después comencé a trabajar en una empresa extranjera como programador y llegué a pensar en volverme "digital nomad" por europa. Al final terminé viendo este tipo de problemas y aceptando que de echo mi calidad de vida en México está bien. Eso sí, antes de saber el significado de "gentrificacion" me fui a una renta con plazo forzoso participando en la gentrificacion. Parte de este mensaje también lo tomo como mío, para no olvidar que no debo participar en la creación de este tipo de burbujas, muchas gracias por tu esfuerzo difundiendo el mensaje!
I'm definitely an immigrant, not an expat. I don't plan on ever returning to the US.I try to be as nice and polite as possible, because I see myself as an ambassador for gringos. Every time a local has a good experience with me, it reinforces a more positive attitude in general. I use a translator app, then try to speak what it says. If I'm destroying it completely and not making myself clear, then I resort to showing them the text. My Spanish lessons start next month, and I look forward to being able to better know my neighbors and other people I interact with on a steady basis.

Los mexicanos a pesar de la gentrificación y de lo que nos está costando adaptarnos a la gentrificación(en el norte lo sufrimos menos porque lo hemos vivido los últimos 30 años con todas nuestras playas y pueblos mágicos), eventualmente nos adaptaremos, somos un país de acogida y estaremos abiertos y receptivos a recibir a los extranjeros, como ha pasado con Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela, Haití, entre tantos otros, tendremos nuestras diferencias y conflictos, igual qué pasa en nuestras familias, pero al final, lo resolveremos y nuestra casa, seguirá siendo su casa. Hace tiempo entendimos que los mexicanos nacen, donde les da su chingada gana.

If you earn around one or two minimun wage you don't have to pay some because that money is concidered to go to basic needs like food and housing, the case for around half of the country. Whatever you had to pay for have the taxes included, if you belive that because mexicans without a formal and stable job (some of them don't have birth certicate specialy on south countryside) don't pay taxes you don't have to, prise to your good that somebody of a cartel or local gang don't hear you say it, more the firsth that are armed to the teeth with smugled arms from military bases from USA

He is soo right, people. When an american comes here trying to speak our language we never judge, we never say go back to your country or go back to school and learn to speak proper spanish. On the other hand, I have been told those mean remarks when I try to speak in english to a U. S. citizen so many times that I simply stopped trying. And Jeremy, I'm so proud of you. Thank you for saying this. I live in Mexico and am from Canada. I still struggle with spanish after a number of years of learning but I know many older boomers who just refuse to learn and actually don't seem to like Mexicans. they are a black eye to all the northerners that love it here in Mexico.
You really don't have to be good at Spanish in my opinion. Ive gotten good but that's cuz of what my job is now. I just think you have to know enough to not be embarrassing
Unfortunately, it goes both ways, my stepfather was Cuban and his mom never tried to learn English, and she lived in the United States over 60 years. She passed away at the age of 101 never being able to speak more than a few words of English. @@richardditty5318 I think some people can live in a country for many years and understand the language but never feel comfortable speaking it. I have a large vocabulary but 'stage fright' when speaking....

As a Belgian living in Ecuador this resonates. I don't see why you wouldn't learn the language of where you are going to live and even the languages nearby, perhaps this comes as I speak a language that was looked down upon historically (probably around the time of my grandparents or greatgrandparents, so I never actually had this problem). It's just a sign of respect to do so. I speak Spanish with relative fluency, and I even took the trouble (which in this city was kind of hard as there are barely any courses) to learn Kichwa, the local indigenous language. To be fair I speak it like a 3 year old as I don't really need it that often, but I think it is important to adapt to where you live. I will never be able to completely assimilate, and sure there are things that are done better in Belgium (driving e.g.), and of course I am in touch with the other Belgians here and I speak Flemish to my son, but this is where I live, I like it and having adapted is probably an important reason for it.

Few weeks ago I was viisiting my hometown and offered help translating the menu to some Americans who sat next to my table, at a restaurant since the waiter only spoke Spanish. I could not believe that the Americans got so insecure about their lack of skills in a second language that they started correcting my "accent" in English....hahaha! Really disgusting attitude that some carry anywhere they go. At any even my accent in English is mostly Canadian, not American. They lucked out to catch me in a good mood cause I was not going to tolerate that in my own city.
Americans also see many issues when all the migrants come to the U.S and also don’t want to learn our language 🤷♂️ Don’t see the difference expect you call us racist if we have a problem🤦♂️Btw I love Mexican immigrants but its the truth… Many come here and act as if we owe them something in our own country…. Hace unos meses fui a México como estudiante intercambio, y nunca me dijo la gente, “regrésate a tu país” Pero una vez estaba caminando con otro estudiante del EEUU, y un niño (tal vez del nivel escuela secundaria) nos gritó, “¡Aquí es México, hablas español!” No me molestó porque yo sé que sólo era un chico. Nada más un momento de una perspectiva diferente
¡Totalmente de acuerdo! hace algunos años fuimos a Brasil por trabajo de mi marido, fuimos a cenar después del trabajo y había un señor que era estadounidense, nos había contado que el viajaba muy seguido a Brasil, que tenía millas de vuelo para darle la vuelta al mundo no se cuantas veces, mi marido era la tercera vez que iba a Brasil y ya hablaba portugués, tomamos clases después de su primer viaje. Era super incomodo tener que estar traduciendo todo para el señor de Estados Unidos y llegó un punto en el que dejaron de hablar con él, yo me sentí mal por él y le dije a mi marido que le tradujera lo que decían porque mi inglés no es tan bueno, mi marido me contestó -¿Porqué no aprende portugués? si viaja tanto a Brasil es necesario que lo aprenda. Total que ya se quedó el señor ese, solo mirando, mientras todos reían y bromeaban en portugués, porque todos se cansaron de estar traduciendo o de estar hablando en inglés por una sola persona.
@@rickr949 creo que todo depende del contexto. Me parece que cuando tienes la posibilidad de hacerlo y te niegas a hacerlo es cuando hay un problema. Considerando que gran parte de los trabajadores mexicanos y de otros lugares de la periferia económica que migraron a Estados Unidos viven en condiciones no tan propicias para poder aprender el idioma, me parece que es entendible, sobretodo en los migrantes de primera generación. Sumado a eso, la mayoría de migrantes mexicanos en Estados Unidos que no solo aprenden el idioma, si no que en la mayoría de los casos, sus hijos o la segunda generación, adoptan el idioma como su primera lengua.
Mi hermana me contó un caso igual, tiene una amiga Mexicana Casada con un Estadounidense, y cada que tienen una reunión su esposa le tiene que estar traduciendo, el Sr. Lleva más de diez años acá y dice mi hermana que no hace ni el minimo esfuerzo por aprender Español... Lo feo es que mi hermana entre otras amigas dejaron de reunirse con esa amiga porque ya les cayó gordo el Señor!😁
@Dulcd Leona Algunas personas de plano no pueden. Si yo estuviera casado con una coreana, japonesa o china, admito que yo no haría el mínimo esfuerzo tampoco 😂. Es muy difícil aprender tanto y aún muchos de ellos batallan con los kanjis o caracteres avanzados en el caso de los coreanos.

I'm Argentinian, my mother language is Spanish, but, what i will say, is mandatory to write in english, for all those who want to understand something. ITS VERY IMPORTANT TO BE HUMBLE WHEN YOU BECAME INMIGRANT. even the englishman in my country notice that, if they say their nationality, they will get alone, with no friends ,because we have a very big account againts their homeland. For the US citizens is the same, in argentina there is no "a big" reprisal for you, but in Mexico or all the countries in central america or even someones in south america, your country did (and still doing) dirty things. Be respectful about that, and being humble. Our common past in the all countries of latin america teach us being open and help the inmigrants (specially, in those countries who get big inmigrant waves like my homeland or Mexico) , but, our patience is very thin with someones who came here with air of superiority, prideful and being xenophobic or laugh about our way of life. Learn spanish as soon as possible, talk with the common people of the country you chose to live, empathize and learn the costumes. this is my advice

Actualmente mi esposa y yo estamos buscando un departamento en la CDMX, y rentar es carísimo en gran medida por la presencia de gringos en México. ¡Y ni hablar de COMPRAR, que es prácticamente imposible para alguien que gana en pesos! El problema lo provocan los propietarios de esos departamentos no las personas que buscan mejorar su vida en este país, ellos suben los precios indiscriminadamente y son abusivos por ello.
Busquen en Cuernavaca o Querétaro, Puebla, Tlaxcala o algún otro lugar cerca de la Ciudad de México, porque si la CDMX se a vuelto muy cara y no lo era.
