- I'm not sure I have ever felt more American than immediately recognizing "KENTUCKY BALTIC" as Monopoly properties, while a brilliant British man is utterly lost. - As someone who has "The Elements" memorized, it's a joy to see Simon reciting it. - I have never felt more British than immediately getting that McCoy is a reference to Sylvester McCoy and therefore is referencing actors who portrayed The Doctor.

I was confused because I remember Baltic Avenue being purple. I even searched to confirm and I found pictures of it in purple! Here's why I was confused: "Parker Brothers changed the Dark Purple properties to the Brown Properties in the United States and Germany in Fall 2008 in order to standardize boards from those two countries with those from the rest of the world."

Some things Simon missed: The "War Doctor" is the form the doctor took during the Time War, and it usually isn't counted when people are counting doctors. You have to skip that one to get the count right to go from MCCOY to CAPALDI in 5. Never thought I'd be explaining Doctor Who lore to a Brit :) The KENTUCKY / BALTIC clue refers to the board game Monopoly. Kentucky Avenue and Baltic Avenue are properties, one is colored red on the board and the other is brown. I think the UK version of monopoly uses completely different property names so it's pretty understandable that you didn't get this one.
@JohnADoe-pg1qk
@JohnADoe-pg1qk 5 месяцев назад
The problem may be that Monopoly is localized. The American version has different (street) names than the UK version or the German one (definitely different names).

In Doctor Who, the series revival started with the Christopher Eccleston as the "9th" Doctor, but they retconned in a doctor before Eccleston which throws the numbering off if you count him. He was called "The War Doctor", so skip him and Capaldi is the 12th.

Puzzles like this are a fascinating insight into Simon's brain. He is /so/ good at the wordplay and anagrams and some of the associations, but when he loses track of what part of the puzzle he is supposed to be in or has a knowledge gap he hits a wall, and the way he works around it is so different from how I would. But he solved the puzzle and I did not, so I can't fault his technique.

I honestly gave up on this one and started watching the video without having solved much (I got the last food and most of the sub-answers for the others, but had no clue what to do with them), but when I saw how much trouble you were having, I felt a bit more confident and got back to it. Having taken the hint from you about the London Underground (which I last visited about 30 years ago), I managed to figure everything else out. It's amazing (and amusing, in retrospect) how hard our brains work to avoid the obvious searches that give the answers. I can explain the "skipping the War" bit, which was the big breakthrough for me that got me past the roadblocks - for reasons far beyond the scope of a RU-vid comment, the BBC added a new Doctor between the Eight and Ninth Doctors and called him the War Doctor. The clue is instructing us to skip that Doctor in the enumeration, which you did by virtue of not knowing about him. It got me past both Star Trek and an odd diversion into the anime series Dragon Ball Z, where an actress named McCoy had voiced the character Android 18, and the only reason I managed not to get stuck on the voice actor for Android 23 is that there's no English dub for that character yet. Definitely an enjoyable puzzle, once you understand what you need to do and liberally exercise your Internet searches.

Wouldn't have a chance at solving something like this, but it's very entertaining watching an actual genius at work. I'm not sure about the Kentucky/Baltic clue, but the clue "Play a board game..." may shine some light on it. I'm actually a bit disappointed that they 'fixed' the Red Apple clue. As per the Wikipedia page - "Cornelia hosts a "Little Red Apple" Drop and Dance in honor of the region's apple growers. The "Big Red Apple" located at the train depot is not dropped" The cryptic clue "Little Red Apple" following the cryptic crossword format would give us "Red Appl". So the Red Appl is indeed what is dropped in Cornelia on NYE (in a cryptic sense at least) as opposed to the Big Red Apple. I may be entirely wrong on this, but I feel that was done on purpose, and if so it 's a shame it was changed.

Long story short, because Doctor Who is confusing as crud, if you solve the puzzle- I think the last clue with the scrambled letters means you are supposed to skip the War Doctor who is sandwiched in the story between the 8th doctor (when the show stopped airing) and the modern revival with Christopher Eccleston’s 9th doctor. Even though the War Doctor was made for Doctor Who’s 50th, they added him in only then for that special. This would get you to Peter Capaldi the “12th” doctor.

@@Lillith.Yeah I was only referring to him ignoring the board game hint. IIRC he didn't get the connection to Monopoly, which was just one google query away. But the different regional colors are a bit of a trap, that's true.

I swear they updated the page as I was working on it. In my mind Once Again had 3+4 letters, and then it was 3+5. It never occured to me to try repeating the process on the answer. Likewise I was just anagramming and not putting in modifiers-I thought the Korean drama thing was a lazy oversight or based off an earlier title translation. Brute force got me through to the end, though, and for these type of hunts I'm ok with that. :)

Makes sense that Jane Street (a finance firm) would spell apple with 4 letters, as that's the ticker symbol for Apple Incorporated stock on American exchanges.

I'm assuming the missing "E" could be referencing the "Little Red Apple" in a cryptic way so it's unique from any other "Red Apples"?

Anyone else follow the red herring of taking all the letters from the color answers (one of which I had wrong) and seeing how many pairs of the same letters that set contained? For me, that turned to be 25 pairs ... that led me nowhere for a long time.

5:00 when you see that clue, and you know you'll get a peotry bonus in your puzzle bonus video. I even wonder if Jane Street did it on purpose 65:48 "where is emerauld, this is ridiculous"... yeah, indeed, it is right beside your cursor, it is riduculous...ly funny. Regarding skipping the war doctor is because a specific plot point broke the numbering of the doctors, and watchers would be confused to count from mccoy to cappaldi. It's basically the one time that not knowing about it make it easier to get the intended answer (which is technically wrong, or at least wibbly wobbly).
@alanclarke4646
@alanclarke4646 5 месяцев назад
Not wrong: the War doctor declared that he was " a doctor no longer", so he can be taken out of the numbering.
