Some years ago I was fortunate to obtain a piece of Samoan Siapo tapa from an estate sale. While the piece itself was gorgeous, it has been poorly stored resulting in rips, tears and damage that precluded it from being framed for display. I still wanted to show it off in a way honoring the amazing artistry that went into creating it. Then it struck me--why not use it to make a drum-style tapa lamp? That's an important goal of mine this year--address the lack of tiki lighting in my tiki space, and a tapa light would look quite good with a flicker light. I'd seen one at Lei Low in Houston I very much admired and in theory it shouldn't be terribly difficult.
I was right--it wasn't terribly difficult *in theory*. In reality, I made many, many mistakes. The good news is that I've learned from my mistakes, and I'll be ready to make another much more quickly and efficiently in the future. And guess what? You can learn from my mistakes as well, jumping right into making a gorgeous tapa light without wasting all the time and effort I did whilst trying to sort things out and figure out what the heck I was doing. Have you make a tapa light like this? Do you plan to? If so, let me know in the comments below!
