Hello Maggie, my daughters started German learning a year ago before they came Austria. Arround 1 hour per week. But they cannot communicate when they just arrived here. After they entered the Mittelschule here in Austria, the school did arrange German class for them. And it took them about 1 year to communicate smoothly in German. But I think they took long because they did not put much effort on learning. I see others can do that after several months when they learn harder. 😉
