मंदिर की स्थापना 1950 में नीम करोली बाबा द्वारा की गई थी। वह शिमला की सुंदरता से इतने आश्चर्यचकित हो गए कि उन्होंने 10-12 दिन वन क्षेत्र में बिताए। यहां योग और ध्यान करते समय बाबा के मन में यह विचार आया कि इस स्थान पर हनुमान मंदिर का निर्माण कराया जाना चाहिए। बाबा ने अपनी इच्छा अपने अनुयायियों को बताई और अंततः 1962 में तत्कालीन उपराज्यपाल राजा बजरंग बहादुर सिंह और अन्य अनुयायियों ने मंदिर का निर्माण शुरू कराया। मंदिर में भगवान राम-सीता-लक्ष्मण, भगवान शिव और भगवान गणेश की मूर्तियाँ भी स्थापित की गईं। मंदिर का उद्घाटन 21 जून 1966 को मंगलवार के दिन हुआ था। धीरे-धीरे इस मंदिर को काफी लोकप्रियता और आस्था प्राप्त हुई
वर्तमान में यहां प्रतिदिन स्थानीय लोगों के साथ-साथ शिमला घूमने आने वाले पर्यटक भी आते हैं। क्योंकि यह भगवान हनुमान का मंदिर है, हर मंगलवार और शनिवार को बहुत सारे लोग आते हैं, और रविवार को भी बड़ी संख्या में लोग मंदिर में आते हैं। प्रत्येक रविवार को यहां विशाल भंडारे का भी आयोजन किया जाता है। मंदिर के पास ही नीम करोली बाबा को समर्पित एक छोटा सा मंदिर भी है, जिसे 1998 में बनाया गया था।[कब?] मंदिर से शिमला शहर का दृश्य भी दिखाई देता है।
