Welcome to the first video in a series I have called 'A Naturalistic Way'.
The aim of this series is to show how you can create naturalistic and enriching enclosures for your animals.
This one is showing you my Varanus acanthurus or Ackie Monitor enclosure.
Here you will see how my pair act over the course of a day and exhibit some natural behaviours yet remain hand tame. This is contributed to 2 factors.
- The naturalistic setup which provides enrichment.
- The way I feed them which you will see later in the video
To learn more about the build check out the link to the Facebook post below:

Scatter feeding:
With the use of grasses and leaf litter scatter feeding encourages the foraging. I scatter feed either roaches, locust or crickets mixing it up every 2-3 days.
Hand Feeding:
I hand feed them once a week. This keeps them used to me and hand tame and gives me a chance to give them a visual heath check.

Nice :) For species that you CAN easily provide a natural habitat, you should provide it. I can't imagine why anyone would want to do it differently. For us, it looks much nicer and for the animal it feels much nicer. Everyone wins! Looking forward to seeing your other setups!

Thanks Jen. I completely agree... although there are time when simple setups can be of use such as quarantine or hospital enclosures. Go and check out my Facebook page of the same name ‘Herp HQ’ where there are quite a few posts about my other builds.

Great video. My Ackie has a similar setup now in a 4×2×3' (or 1.3×.7×1m). I plan to add an extra 2' or .7m to the overall length to increase enrichment and opportunities! (Forgive my rough imperial to metric conversations...lol)

@@HerpHQ looks so much bigger than it actually is!

That’ll be because it probably has much more usable space than most vivariums larger than it.

So I spent all day scaring the web and reading care sheets my question is what is the proper humidity for the Ackie monitors
@fertbutt4233
@fertbutt4233 5 лет назад
Essential Laughing they live in Australia so they don't have a lot of humidity except for in their burrows. I read somewhere you can occasionally mist their burrows to keep them humid butother than that, the ackies cage should be dry

Looks amazing, but why do people turn up music like that in between talking? It had to watch it muted to focus

Will a exo terra 36-18-18 work for a ackie
@HerpHQ
@HerpHQ 6 лет назад
Essential Laughing no that’s far too small. As a bare minimum you want to be using a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft for a single ackie. Ideally much bigger. You’ll also want a deep plinth on the viv to enable you to have very deep substrate.
@essentiallaughing3069
@essentiallaughing3069 6 лет назад
Will a 48x18x18 work thx
@HerpHQ
@HerpHQ 6 лет назад
No that’s still to small. As I said 4x2x2 absolute minimum. But ideally you want 5x3x2 (w x h x d) minimum to allow for a good 1ft of substrate.

Do you have a male and a female?
@HerpHQ
@HerpHQ 4 года назад
NickTheKamol these were actually unsexed siblings. Although I know was female for sure. Suspect they were both female. I no longer have these animals though. They went to a college as part of the animal education collection.

Realy nice. Always better to let them hunt. Don t feed them in the mouth. Its a big mistake. They get fat and loose the instinct of hunting
