I feel so bad. I thought mandy pitikin was famous from criminal minds that's where I know him from , but now I'm like omg he's a classic Broadway star and his voice is amazing in the song A new Argentina from Evita
Must watch him and Bernadette in Sunday in the Park w/ George, and a role alongside Madonna in Dick Tracy. Both are Sondheim. And Yentel. Oy vey. He is so diverse and unappreciated for his talents.
@bobmaxjeff. NO ESTOY MUY DE ACUERDO CON LO QUE DECIS DEL ACTOR QUE HACE DEL CHE... EN REALIDAD TE SOY SINCERA. PARECE MAS UN ALEMAN QUE EL CHE .SALUDOS.
We were lucky enough to have seen Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin in Evita. We were so taken aback by their performance we went back 2 more times, absolutely brilliant.
This the stage version of Evita , which calls for a different type of performance than the subtlety of film. Different types of audiences, too. Broadway audiences expect superior vocals, which they definitely received in this production. Films often cast bigger names in the leading roles, often sacrificing vocals. In the film version of Evita, the keys were changed and the tempo slowed to accommodate Madonna's pop voice.
We were lucky to see Patti and Mandy in the original Evita in 1980. We got to meet Patti after the production. We loved ot so much and bought the sound track the next day. Just brilliant! My favorite Broadway show, and I’ve seen many!
Wow can't believe the performer portraying Juan Peron is Bob Gunton, best remembered by me as the evil warden in The Shawshank Redemption. I have a new respect for him hearing his great singing voice here. And Mandy Patinkin, what an amazing talent. Now when I see him in reruns of Criminal Minds and Dead Like Me I think of how great a singer he is but also an outstanding actor.
Everyone's comparing Madonna and Patti Lupone...I think they both did a good job in their own way. Patti Lupone may be "bigger" than Madonna, but Patti's playing it on stage as opposed to video...you have to be bigger.
I remember seeing this in New York while stationed at the Navy 3 of my shipmates went to see it I so enjoyed Mandys performance I memorised every one of his songs all of us got caught up in the shows magic
Oh good, I thought I was losing my mind. Couldn't figure out why Che Guevara was in a play with Evita Peron. Lol. Historical inaccuracy to say the least.
Evita was my first love and why I fell in love with musical theater. I was lucky enough to see it live in 2012 in New York but nothing will ever come close to Patti and Mandy.
Sorry I didn't respond before. The belting has nothing to do with those in the back row hearing. It's a style of singing. Recording artists belt too. This is a belting role, and Madonna isn't a belter and has a much smaller range. Therefore, the keys were lowered and the tempos slowed down to accommodate Madonna's voice. It wasn't the same Evita that audiences fell in love with. I agree with the sets being cool, but at the end of the day, it's about the story and the music. (cont)
she is the most incredible actress in the world, and really, really nice for those that think shes a bitch. i got to meet her and she was really respectful to us and fun to be around. go patti!
Yay patti! You can tell it's at the tony's and not at their normal stage because she's a little farther than Peron than normal and she misses linking his arm at 5:04. Shout out to Mandy Patkin=Inigo Montoya rockin' the house as well.
@54lsh (continued) I don't mean to belittle the movie as I believe hard work went into it and it wasn't bad really, but I just fail to understand how you think the movie is better. They softened Eva by giving her Another Suitcase and not having a strong belt like Patti. The Evita we see in the movie just doesn't equal the one we see here.
"We'll -- you'll be handed power on a plate." Fantastic performance. Her "Buenos Aires" had terrible diction but we all have performances that we look back on and can't believe we did.
Well I have to say Patti LuPone probably sings the best Evita that I've seen, it's currently playing in my hometown and the actress who plays Evita is from Broadway but she has to literally yell the high notes to hit them where as Patti just does it will amazing ease and that is what she's so renowned on Broadway!! And the musical I believe shows the true Eva where as the movie tries to make you sympathize with Eva
Has anyone seen Seth Rudetsky deconstruct this video? Take a close look at around 5:03- Patti totally misses Peron's arm when she goes to link hers with his.
Really her performance made me a fan of Eva Peron I think you should say who could write such a play about Eva Peron and thats Webber and from there it came from that crappy book so its not just Patti
Wonderful movie.....it was the first Evita I saw and I fell asleep. Im so thankful I got the soundtrack with patti so I would know to watch youtube bc somewhere out there Evita was a good musical
Actually "Another Suitcase In Another Hall" is not sung by Eva, it's by Juan Peron's lover that she kicks aside. Which if you're listening to the original album the part of Juan's lover is played by Barbara Dickinson. Julie's only part on the song is the beginning ("Hello and goodbye! I just unemployed you!"
YES!!! I was at the movies several months ago seeing a movie with a friend (i can't recall which one... but that doesn't matter.) and we were discussing this! Glad to know we are not alone in our thoughts ;)
I don't know how these ranking things work, but he was also called General Peron. In the Peronist anthem "Evita Capitana" there is the following excerpt: Por Perón y por Evita La vida queremos dar Por Evita Capitana Y por Perón General Which translates to: For Perón and for Evita Our lives we will give For Captain Evita And General Perón!
Agreed. This is his most accesible, perfectly balanced piece ever. Great songs and not so heavy arrangements and a variety of tempos. All his other stuff is hit (Jesus Christ Superstar) or miss (Cats)
Julie Covington's vocals on the original album are still the best. No one sang "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" with such seduction and innocence. Patti and Elaine although are great in their own different ways, seemed more concerned with delivery than interpretation
as well there is a live orchestra at the Tony's don't you think the audience would notice if for one show the orchestra was replaced by a track. I mean there is no plausible way they could pull of lipsynching at the tonys no way
I still like the original London the best-with David Essex and Elaine Paige. Its outstanding, as great as this is, its just not quite as amazing. David Essex had a fullness unmatched!
One thing I find interesting is how the different productions of Evita reflect Andrew Lloyd Weber’s changing perspective of Eva Peron over the years. The Evita of his 1976 concept album, voiced by Julie Covington, was more shrill; the Evita of the 1979 Broadway production, played by Patti LuPone, I think of as bitter and hard. Madonna portrayed Evita in the 1996 film as tough, but more damaged than the less complex version of the character Weber originally had conceived while still in his 20s. This can perhaps best be reflected in the song, “You Must Love Me” (which first appeared in the film) along with revised lyrics to the other songs and the reassigning of “So What Happens Now?” from the character of Peron’s 16-year-old mistress to Eva herself. Because of this, I don’t find one actress’s portrayal of Eva as “better” than the another's, because in many ways they were portraying different women (and that's not taking into account the different type of acting for stage vs. screen).
I'm not sure on the actual history, but I believe Che Guevara did spend some time in Argentina. Even if he hadn't, he's basically a representation of revolution and dissatisfaction in Argentina.
@PurpleBritishPanda i agree that patti can belt out the songs and that is great for broadway but in the movie there is no need to sing it to those in the back row because it is recorded music and madonna is a recording artist so its two completely different styles i prefer the movie i also think the musical if great the reason i said the movie was better was because there was so much more they could do ie have wonderful sets or outdoor settings as well as have
You have to remember, in the musical, Che represents not only the dissenting voices (as I said earlier) but that he is the Devil's Advocate... Not a LITERAL character, but a symbolic one. So, you are correct in what you said, but bear in mind that he is a symbol here.
Che also means 'the voice of the people' and some people speculate that this is all Llyod Webber was going for with that character. But it's a matter of opinion.
@54lsh a much larger budget. i admit mandy outsings antonio but i appreciate the spanish accent and the fact that he can be che guervaar as well as an everyman for the common people where as in the play i see him almost solely as guervara as for giving another suitcase to eva i liked i thought it made sense for the flow of the story and it humanizes eva which is an important part of the characterization we should feel sympathy and anger towards her.
i respect your opinion, but i don't think that she seduced everyone into thinking she's the best, especially when a lot of times she felt she wasn't doing a great job... i don't even think that the originals are always better, i just really think she defined the role, and she set a very high standard for actors to follow... most people thought that she was born to play the role - i know that sounds dramatic, but its really what was said about her performance
No wonder Patti LuPone says this musical was hard on her voice--she's really belting! And she thinks Madonna didn't sing to her utmost. Well, she didn't have to. It was a movie! They can edit!
I was saying how she portrays the character is how it was written, the book made her seem this way. Patti does portray how the book says though. Meaning its not just patti its what she was told to do
no he wasn't, but he was one of the bigger figures of that time. When they wrote this play, they used him to symbolize revolution, which is what he was all about.
exactly.. if you watch the clips from the actual show you can see how darkened it is and it really captures the mood, plus everyones performance is outstanding... much better than the movie. besides that the keys were changed int he movie, completely changes the whole pace and in my opinion takes away from the masterpiece it was
