It goes back 1000 years to when the Falu copper mine was established in Sweden. The mine at one time was the largest copper supplier in the world and was mined for many hundreds of years. It was discovered that left overs from the mining provides very good wood preserving characteristics. So this, mixed basically with lin seed oil gave a paint perfect for wood buildings about 500 years ago. Today the mine is a museum, there is still plenty of material for producing the same type of paint and as they say, the rest is history! The paint is cheap, easy to spray on large barns, doesn’t flake off...just needs a light brushing with a broom when it is time to paint. We just had our 90 year old barn resprayed this summer. Two coats in just one day. A wondeful 500 year old paint type still used today

Red houses are pretty much only in rural and semi rural areas where Hedblom seems to a lot/most of his work. Red is a warm and fresh color for a place in the world where the weather is often grey and cold. In cities almost all houses are grey, white or beige, with little to no contrasting accent colors, just like most of the world. Then you can talk about no individuality...
