A New Dawn in Bangladesh | How the Interim Government Plans to Tackle Unrest

For the first time in a decade and half - Bangladesh has a change of guard. What began as student protests in early-July, quickly escalated into violent clashes, and then to a regime change. Bangladesh, today, has a new government. But the interim government is not free of challenges. At first, it will have to put an end to the ongoing domestic unrest and revenge attacks. In the longer-term, it will have to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions and bring in the much-needed constitutional reforms. It would also have to carry on the legacy of rapid socio-economic transformation and address the unemployment question. Most importantly - with Myanmar facing instability, the new regime will have to find a way to maintain good relations with its only stable neighbour - India. They will have to balance between Delhi and Beijing, while keeping extremism under check and ensuring that the minority communities are protected, even as previously proscribed parties and ideologies are mainstreaming.
What triggered this change in Bangladesh? What key challenges are confronting the interim government? What are people expecting from the new regime? How does the government intend to address these challenges, and meet these expectations? Why should neighbours be concerned about the developments in the country? What implications does this new transition have on the India-Bangladesh relationship? Will the new government succeed in ensuring an inclusive economy and polity, and find a sustainable solution to people’s grievances?

Miss Das, Your assertion is not correct; Bangladesh was unable to enact deeply democratic laws after Mujib's 1975 assassination. Rather, Mujibur killed democracy himself on February 24, 1975, when he declared the creation of the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League, the nation's only recognized political party (BAKSAL). The announcement automatically abolished all other political parties in the country and eventually made the other parties that did not join BAKSAL. Awami League, whenever in power, tried to establish an autocratic system and always had a fear of competing in elections. They had never been for the people.

The whole of South Asia is littered with countries that belong to the group of developing countries. Even 80 years after the last war. There is no indication that any of these South Asian countries are showing signs of meaningful inclusive growth. No matter how or what the statistics might say in terms of growth rate, balance of payment Etc. The real sign and symptoms of development and inclusive growth of Any Given Nation is how their education system is reformed. Education system as it exists in the South Asian countries is nothing more than Scavenging on the leftovers of Anglo-American. Throughout South Asia only 5% anglo phone citizens are the one who are enjoying the benefits of whatever growth or development has taken place. The remaining 95% are simply marginalized. Signs and symptoms of development other than growth rate etc. is- that a truly developed or developing country is facing fierce resistance and hostility of anglo-american West. And underdeveloped Country that is in bed with anglo-american West means that it's ruling class is prospering but majority of the people are pauparized. That is the real picture of South Asian countries. Note - in this meeting all participants are speaking in a language which 95% of their fellow countrymen do not even understand. Think about it and draw conclusion.

BD man wants us to believe that Bangladesh has just been formed and there is no constitution and everything has to be written again, seriously how was the country running so far. These r just covering fire for the American stooges to continue in power for the next 10 years. And again a new revolution. For the information of BD people who wouldn't know Sushant Sarin (Moderator) he is pretty straight forward with his analysis especially with regards to Pakistan he comes with all gun blazing but I don't know with regards to Bangladesh he has been quite, quite mellowed down version about this whole mobocracy event. Also to BD people i would like to state that no Indian who is not a leftist will ever acknowledge this so called revolution, appreciate it or pay obituary to the people dead of the so called student revolution. The maximum you could have got from the leftist and liberal ecosystem of Indian journalist and intellectuals give you the cover that no Hindu genocide has happened and even if it has happened then it was of Hindu AL people and those violence is perfectly fine. But I am amazed at how Pakistan and Americans have systematically established this anti-India thoughts in the young and old minds of course a kafir Hindu is a great unifying force to play the game.

@riteshiitr
@riteshiitr 9 часов назад
I don't think I agree with your opinion on India's relationship with its neighbours, but assuming that's the case, I think the prime reason for the souring of relationships can primarily be attributed to economic downfall. I think COVID had a significant impact on all economies, but significantly more on smaller economies than bigger economies, like India, which is also a consumption driven economy. If the economic situation was any worse, I think the current gov wouldn't have returned to power, and India would also have been in a bad situation, with protesting students and the unemployed population, blaming Modi and probably the US or Europe..

Sir, Bangladeshis are hindu bengali converts over centuries. Unlike pakistanis the hinduness of bangladeshis is explicit due to bengali language which is diluted sanskrit. Bangladesh has taken a new turn now,mending their fences with pakistan from which they separated in 1971. They appear to start with Pakistani model of governance where army is the prime mover and hindu india is an enemy.

Jamaat-e-islami has some radical structures backed by Pakistani ISI as soon as they receive CIA nod they were able to literally create so much of distress. If they think Bangladesh can grow without India give them that just step back as we have done for Pakistan. If anyone creates national security issue you react just disproportionately let them find their identity since this islamic characters are jokers they are some time arabs, turks then they become western people. @@abhishekverma6098don’t know what recent violence you’re talking of but majority of that was during the July protests and for like a week after the 5th of August when there was no government or law and order anywhere. For a country to plunge into an anarchy like scenario is not out of the ordinary right after a revolution. What’s sad is that indians still view Bangladesh from the Pakistani lens and think they are the same. Bengalis are much more progressive as an ethnicity than pakis and it shows as well in most human development indexes that where you’ll see Bangladeshi women more integrated into the work force as compared to both India and Pakistan. There are questions on jamat certainly you’re not wrong about that but shibir hasn’t been seen out and about in public causing unrest ever since the 5th and it’s based on public accounts. International crimes tribunal you’re speaking of isn’t international even to start with and it was founded during the Hasina regime so questions have remained always from international observers about the fairness of the trials. Jamat certainly has a lot of tough questions to answer to the general populous in the country if they wanna be accepted by the mass and it’s highly unlikely they’ll come in power but one thing is for sure that is they probably have the most structured and organized political party in Bangladesh currently and that’s cus of the way they function as a political party. Truth of the matter is there isn’t a single political party that has enough going for them in Bangladesh where people find the confidence that they’ll form a good governance. All the parties are equally fucked up. That’s why people are so excited for what the Yunus interim govt will bring to the table for the next few years cus so far all the appointments for the different ministries have been based on pure merit and some of the top intellectuals in the country are in those seats. Not to forget Dr. Yunus is a noble peace prize winner himself and a widely accepted intellectual globally.

Not a very enlightened gathering I am afraid . Jamaat islami was different from prior to 1930s political gatherings .. 1. It is not very caliphate orientated party or pure movements as prior Muslim activist groups were . 2. It is not a madrassa raised generation party rather it's members had hakim's doctors engineers etc 3. It calls itself a revolutionary Islamic party but in itself it is semidemocratic politics loving party where majority is not madly power hungry or ambitious . 4. It has a communist party like structure but there are no cut throats in it . 5. Bangladesh jamaat was an ordinary semidemocratic party doing it work which is primarily to provide conservative atmosphere in educational institution and trying to get some Islamic laws passed but mujib Goondas started killing not only Bhashani men but also jamaat islami men prior to 1970 elections . Bhashani had militants . 6. So when awami league started killing opponents in Feb 1970 jamaat and Biharis had to do side with Pakistan army to save their skins but USA double crossed Pakistan with Nixon on Pakistani side but usa deep state wanting creation of Bangladesh . 7. India deeply unpopular due to established anti Muslim credentials of Modi and alleged complicity of Modi in killing of students and hanging of jamaat men so Modi is silent on Hasina knowing that trial might expose him too . 8 . Jamaat islami where ever it is usually do not try to control foreign relation in preference to army of that state so it is unlikely that jamaat will have policy completely at variance with Bangladeshi army , that is not their style even in Pakistan . 9. The death of Muslim patriot the kashmiri jamaat leader Gilani was great blow to Muslim cause. 10. Off course Hindus and Muslims cannot be on same trajectory otherwise those Muslims are hypocrite ..But we do not expect jamaat to have policy not in connivance with army . Jamaat is an agitatory but not a militant per se organization but has capacity if it wants too
