Calvin Grier is probably the best carbon printer in the world. Last year he devoted himself to research on gum-printing. Frustrated with poisonous traditional method, he tested thousands of materials and his determination to replace poisonous dichromates bear fruit in the newly invented printing process called Print Maker's Friend. It's a modernised version of gum-printing that is not using gum or poisonous dichromates, but it uses polymer and other modern non-toxic materials.
The Print Mater's Friend has many advantages over the traditional method, but let me name just a few.
- It's NON-TOXIC, eco-friendly!
- Much faster to process a print
- It doesn't need very strong exposure unit
- Shelf-life is over a year
- It doesn't have the dark effect (traditionally sensitised gum-print hardens even if in the dark)
- adjusting pigments for different shades of tonality
And it keeps all the great advantages of the traditional gum-printing method like:
- option to make color prints
- split toning (for instance warm yellowish highlights with blue shadows and blacks)
- intensity the vibrance of colors
- using various pigments and inks
- you can use digital negative and hand-print digital photos
- developing and fixing is all done with plain tap water
