Slackware was my first distro in 1994. I installed it on my custom 486 computer in my dorm room in college. I had an operating systems class that was using minix and I got permission to implement some scheduler changes in Linux instead. That ended up being a major detour for me but I had a lot of fun.

You deserve some serious cred for being open to stream about Slackware 15. You did quite well actually. There are shortcuts and scripts that make life a lot easier in Slackware, especially when first starting up. For example:L Had you typed "adduser DT" instead of "useradd" you would have been prompted for everything a user needs like password and groups, etc. and speaking of which an up arrow brings up a half dozen most commonly used groups with one keystroke. I've been using Slackware as my Main for going on 21 years and the feature I like best is that it doesn't change just for change sake or "new and improved" hype. That way one doesn't have to keep relearning fundamentals and can actually amass experience to grow adept faster and deeper. Anyway I just wanted to thank you and mention how cool it was to see someone who did enough research to do a truly decent job.

Blessed are those who found and never departed (or couldn't depart) with Slackware since its floppy days. I thought 14.2+ might be the last Slackware. I am glad to see 15.0 finally and replacing all '-current' on my daily-use laptops/desktops with '-15.0' even if the upgrade is just a face-lift for psychological effect only. It will be good for another decade.

If I got it correctly it has got a working multilib. I dared installing the 64 bit version. On 14.2 I stayed 32 bit because some software (Brother printer and scanner drivers) never made it to 64. Just a fun memory, we used 486sx-25's with 4 MB ram with 4 Boca 16 port serial cards to have 64 33.6k modems on one machine. I went to another ISP where they used Windows NT running on 486DX2-66, 16MB ram with really expensive 8 port serial cards with co-processor. Their boxes cost 4x what ours did while only using 6 modems compared to our 64. Even though their computer had 2 built-in serial ports, plus the 8 port smart serial card, if they ran more than 6 modems the system would drop so many packets that it was useless. Even running 6 modems they had dropped packets. The Boca 16 port serial cards cost $140, their 8 port smart cards were about $600. We also offered a free shell account with internet service or you could buy a shell only account. They couldn't offer shell to their users.

My first distro was Yggdrasil. Then I used Slackware, purchased at various computer shows through the years in those huge CD packs. My last regular load was Redhat 8, IIRC. I did grab the X86 version of Solaris at one point to play with. I'll have to get This version of Slackware and put it on one of my old laptops to play with.

Slackware was the first Linux distribution I ever really loved way back in the 90s. Thank you for getting us up to speed on what's happening with it now.

Hi Distrotube I was wondering if you would know how to Extract a Nomadbsd download on a linux mint computer and then write it to my flash drive. Nomad bsd is designed to work from a USB Flash Drive only. Thank You.

To say that you post videos just about every other day, I see very few of them. I just realized when one of your videos got recommended to me from another video from a different subscriber, that I actually hadn't gotten any of your stuff on my YT front page for so long that I forgot you existed. Literally. Wtf RU-vid?

Slackware was the distro I leaned Linux on back in the early 90s. I remember being at a computer show and seeing a disk set and saying to myself, this looks user-friendly. Boy was I in for a surprise.

I've used Slackware first time back in the '90s :) One of my first memories is when i accidentally pressed Enter on some mp3 (or maybe it was a wav?) while browsing in Midnight Commander. And it started to play this mp3. In text mode. Without any previous soundcard configuration. I was in completely awe :) PS. It's still using LILO?!? Real oldschool! :D

I started with Slackware, went to several distros from Debian to OpenSUSE, Fedora, Gentoo, Arch and finally found out that Slackware is made for me.. or I am made for Slackware 👍 I totally adhere to the Slackware’s philosophy. Just install what you need and use the free space for what you want. And I also have to say that the manuals are really everywhere for everything. And you can’t talk about Slackware without mentioning Alien Bob 👌😄 Btw there’s a live iso from Alien Bob that makes the installation really easy and the repository mirror is already enabled, but you can still change it in the config file. There’s also the multilib mirror and Slackpkg+ that adds update/install support for the multilib. I must admit that Alien Bob made life easier and does a really great job 👏 I recommend to anyone who wants to try Slackware and isn’t familiar with it, to get Alien Bob’s live iso The only drawback as a gamer is that I had to compile Feral gamemode as it can’t be found in any repo yet. Otherwise everything else is fine

I tried running Slackware when i was starting out in Linux and tried out different distros and i legit failed and could not get it to run in virtual machine or booting live from a thumbdrive with the iso on it. Was nice to see it in action in this video.😎

Back in those days Linux buffs used to recommend Slackware to me (a total newbie), so I tried it, and never figured out how to do things so went back to Windows. Years later I tried Ubuntu and wasn't satisfied with that either so went back to Windows (yes, again), now I'm using Elementary OS because it seemed easier and simpler than Mint, bad choice?

@@user-qo8wj5ig4r Maybe I should have been more clear, in advancing my knowledge around Linux as a OS. Nope, I'm totally new... I can basically just install a program and run it, that's it.

@@user-qo8wj5ig4r That's really good advice, thanks for not being one of those "elites" that I've ran into when asking questions on certain forums, not going to name them (the forums), because there's probably good people there too. I was thinking about doing a distro jump to Pop, but, I think your right I'll should get familiar with Elementary first. Thanks again, saved your comment in text document, because that was really helpful.

So, DT, you didn't need to install a boot partition when you installed this on your VM? I am reckoning if you're installing this on actual hardware that has OSes on other drives, you would need to do this correct?

Hey DT, can you clarify this for me, if I install Slackware, doesn't the current branch make it a rolling distro? Then who cares when a new install ISO is released?

I remember Slackware my second distro that "pushed" me to learn how to compile vanilla kernel because stock Slackware kernel was too old. That knowledge worth fortune because compiling kernel manually was introduced me to various linux technology, i.e. I was really excited with linux bridge project and powerful iptables possibilities (this is way before Mikrotik even exist).

Oh, wow...Thought Slackware was forgotten in the past. Really surprised to see them still going. Slackware was the second distro I tested after Debian 3.0 Woody in 2004...Returned to Debian, though...Gotta give the 15.0 a try for sure! Took my first steps in the world of Linux via Debian 2.2 Potato, which I installed in an old Compaq 486 from a CD that came with a book I loaned from the library...Loved Linux ever since

One issue that still always puzzled me is dealing with swap. Say for example you have a large amount of ram on your system. I presently have 32gigs when creating the swap is it a 1:1 i.e my swap would be 32gigs? Is it a percentage i.e maybe 10gigs or is it jus enough to hold some minor things on the hardrive if the ram somehow runs out and can be 1 or 2 gigs.

It has been a number of years since my first foray into Linux. This grandfather of all distros predates that by probably as many years if not more (too lazy to do the math at this time). I started with Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron). How the Linux landscape has changed in that time. How much it had ALREADY changed since Slack was new kid. Whatever your flavour, Slackware deserves respect for being the first.
