Battle Mania 2, Thunder Force IV, Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Rolling Thunder 2, Contra HC, Titan, Xenocrisis...this man understands the Mega Drive/Genesis library, finally someone who understands! Respect
@@SmokeMonster absolutely for sure, but honestly I get so very tired of seeing the same games on MD/Gen videos. Altered beast, aladdin, earthworm jim, mortal kombat, games that sold well but ultimately aren't that special imo, at least not compared to friggin Alien Soldier haha. Thx for the video, I need to look into getting one of these. I love the cpu and sprite limit break.
@SmokeMonster Hey it was good to meet you on CGQs stream the other day (as of the time of this comment). I keep hearing so much about the MiSTer and now I'm kind of intrigued and interested in getting one. Your videos on the MiSTer is pretty cool and very informative. There is so much I want to learn about it before getting my own.
I AM AT THE BLEEDING EDGE OF CLASSIC GAMING, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Seriously, though, the Genesis core is so good. Even over the last year there's been great improvements.
Thanks for the great video .The Genesis core on the MiSTer is a shining GEM also great you used some of soltan's filters .It really shows how good the HDMI output is
I discovered the MiSTer yesterday, and I can't believe that I won't have to buy every single Analogue console and a pile of Everdrives if I just buy this thing.
@@SmokeMonster I got to know this core very well when I was waiting for my SD RAM. Your videos are so informative and inspiring to learn from. Thanks again for all your content. This has become one of my favorite channels while in full manic MiSter mode. :)

Excellent video, keep up the great work! :) Also, I didn't even know about Battle Mania: Daiginjō despite being a Mega Drive fan growing up. Definitely have to give that one a try.
Oh god, it's awesome! Track down MIJET's hack though, and you can combine it with the audio fix by Boyfinn I posted at romhacking.net to make the ultimate version.
This is my favourite core by far. As a kid in Australia when the megadrive came out there was a lot of excitement, I remember seeing Altered Beast and thinking this is very close to the arcade, just slower (thanks 50hz PAL). The system was out of my price range and when I saw sonic the hedgehog I thought the commercials looked better than the actual game (thanks again 50hz), ended up getting the SNES and the rest was history. Cool video! I've compared this core with a Japanese model 1 megadrive and it feels and sounds identical, I can't stress how accurate this is...
Great video. I'm definitely an original hardware kind of guy in general, but I think I'm going to get into the MiSTer next year thanks to your videos and the panel I attended at AVGC. Eventually I might want to learn a HDL and see if I can make some contributions to the cores, too.
Mr is so much more convenient than original hardware. Everything in one place, a fraction of the size, switch between systems at a press of a button and you can so easily forget it's not real hardware it's so realistic in a way traditional emulators just never are. But real hardware is still the best for me. But this is so close it literally stands shoulder to shoulder. Plus my own mother made me sell my spectrum to the kid down the road (still not forgiven) as I had an Amiga. Well now I can play Spectrum again!
If you're an old school gamer, you have no idea what you're missing. Old school hardcore and competitive gamers are using this to replace arcade boards and consoles right now. These will be tournament standard over console ports or emulation if no one has an actual board very soon.
@@SmokeMonster Better than the other way around :) Looking forward for your next low latency LLAPI USB polling overclocking video! I am putting my Blisster purchase on hold until then.
Can I be 'that guy'? If an owner and massive fan thanks largely to your word on MiSTer back what feels a long time ago. The people behind this project and those such as yourself who give mention to them are doing amazing things. However. I'm finding these daily videos would be best focusing on how to get the best out of each core in setup/options and the like rather than a brief overview. I think the Minimig core was an example of that. Having said that, keep up the great work, I always enjoy listening.
I think these videos are great for people who don't want to dedicate a lot of time to a single video. These are great just to get out the most important details people who don't own a MiSTer yet would want to know.
I tried to make this series as evergreen as possible, and with how fast the menus and options evolve, setup instruction videos would get dated quick. Maybe once things settle down I'll take those on.
It is more accurate. There are bugs on the Mega SG that don't show up in MiSTer Genesis, it lacks proper LPF accuracy compared to the MiSTer as well. Mega SG was superior back when it initially came out, but MiSTer has taken the lead since. Though, in defense of Kevtris he's been extremely busy with the Pocket. If Kevtris had all 2019 to work on Mega SG then it would have been just as accurate as MiSTer.
@@googleboughtmee You must be on some old release. The Genesis audio is pretty much perfect at this point. I just played Revenge of Shinobi and didn't hear any clicks or pops.
A question about the Turbo Mode: what happens when you activate it on games with low fps like Beyond Oasis? Do they get simply faster or do they get 60fps? And thanks for all these informative videos! I'm just going through all of them!
Can you confirm that the audio issue has been fixed on The Lion King and Aladdin? On other videos, the audio sounds atrocious compared to original hardware, like to the point of it being a bug.
@@SmokeMonster I don't have a Mister yet to confirm the bug still exists. If you get a moment, check if the sound sounds terrible on the Lion King. It's evident in the first 2 mins of the very first level.
I agree the prices are not justified.. But.. The potentail of the analogue pocket having a second FPGA for developers aka MIster is a big thing. You can run mister cores but have the advantage of using analogues prestine built in upscaler for better latency
I wasn’t that interested in getting a MISTer and was mainly watching because I love your videos, but this video easily convinced me! Great work on the video and the countdown series!
Buying a Mister and being gifted with the SmokeMonster series has made it the best xmas ever! Just wondering, you talked about outputting hdmi and vga at the same time? Did I hear that right? If I was to get an IO board, could I actually have Mister playing on both an hdmi lcd and an rgb crt monitor at the same time?
@@SmokeMonster awesome! That means I can plug it in to two monitors (rotating lcd and crt) and pick the one I prefer on a game by game basis. This truly is gold.
Thanks for this excellent video @SmokeMonster. Could you recommend a good place to purchase pre-assembled Mister console? Just with HDMI and the necessary add on boards for all current cores
Smokemonster. I watch all your videos and if anyone would know this question, I would imagine you would. N64 is one of my favorite consoles due to the era in my life it came out, "do you think it is possible on the mister, de10 nano"?
@@SmokeMonster I appreciate the reply. Be a while I would imagine if it did have 1. Would just be amazing having all the features with N64 and use my blisster to use original controllers with hardware emulation. How do I join the discord also. Would love to get updates on what is going on
@@SmokeMonster Wow you replied! Awesome that sounds good. I want to get a DE10-Nano and a Scart PCB from Arcade Forge, will that fit with other things like an I/O Board and SD Ram Board? I also read I need cooling, it's a bit confusing. I'm in Britain
Can you make per rom saves? For example, can you save the composite blending for Wolfenstein so it loads the game with that setting, but not when it loads Mortal Kombat? Or loading 6 button mode for Mortal Kombat, but not for a game doesn't play nice with 6 button (I know there are a handful).
@@SmokeMonster thanks!!! now I see it on github, I was looking for some dedicated video board... you really should make a video about the boards needed to build a nice mister system , it would help lots of newcomers (my self included LOL)
@Smokemonster: 09:56: "The built in HDMI-scaler is closest thing to an OSSC you're gonna get"..."less than a frame of lag"; Wouldn't it be possible to eliminate this Frame of lag by routing the pure RGB from the Mister through an OSSC? Might there be an option in the future to do line multiplying (afaik that's all the OSSC does) in the mister (or is that physically impossible?) I really appreciate your insights!
@@peterprivacy5034 A few lines amounts to.... a few lines. Mister has a full scaler with 4 lines latency with vsync_adjust=2. OSSC has 2 lines latency. Line doubling is neither needed nor wanted.
Mister doesn't overclock either, CPU Turbo works differently. Analogue probably didn't include it because it breaks some games and isn't really what a real Genesis did.
I'm curious if there is anyone working on a way to add cartridge adapters for 8 &16 bit consoles for those of us who like to play from original cartridge media.
You just need to manually switch your region type in the menu for those. Sometimes the ROM header has incorrect or missing region data, so the auto-region function won't work in those cases and you just have to change it manually.
While this is awesome, I don't know if I would find it that useful personally for sega, unless you could naively output the composite signal... I hate the dithering effects being ruined by rgb outputs...
I always thought you composite people were crazy, but Wolf 3D did look way better with blending enabled. Antonio Villena makes a composite add-on for mister if you want that option.
SmokeMonster I’ll look into it. As for why composite, well, the poopier & smearer the video output the better the genesis transprency/visual effects look. Like when you played virtua racing, all that dithering just becomes much more a part of the actual experience and less so messy image noise on the screen. Composite on genesis is just where I’m comfortable. Same goes for ps1, master system, & saturn, even dreamcast.... I don’t really use rgb on anything anymore... I did for awhile. But something in my brain shifted & I’m back to composite. On my pvm at that! S-Video usually is fine for the ps1 & dreamcast for my taste tho...
I feel like the charm is lost when you psuh the original hardware too much... if that makes sense... if I want emulation quality I just emulate now :p.
Yes, PS2 will be beyond the limits, but I think it's so complex that even if the hardware could fit on the DE10, it would take a large group of coders years to make a core anyways. PS1 is in the works though.
Thanks for these vids, I've ordered a MiSTer recently and these just help me with knowing what options to look into, what to expect etc but it's been difficult to source all the official add on boards. There's a couple of European sellers but they have their own IO boards not sure of the reliability? Ultimately ended up buying from the USA, going to be an expensive up front cost but less than buying Analogues everytime, nothing against them but I'm going to sell my Analogues. I'll get the Pocket for the small form factor and maybe a Neo Geo (if ever) as the homebrew scene seems to be cart only. I've orderd the 6 in 1 cart dumper board from nes infinite lives so any Homebrews cart only I can rip and resell the carts. I just need to find a way to connect controllers. Can anyone vouch for these? www.raphnet-tech.com/products.php Great stuff SmokeMonster, Happy Christmas all.
