I grew up listening to the Carpenters. I think Karen has one of the most beautiful voices in the world. I love her vibrato- when someone sings with a really fast vibrato it sounds ‘forced’ to me. Hers is slow and smooth and natural. And she was a heck of a drummer, too!

My mum would use white noise to sooth me as a baby ( I was a very poorly baby had numerous visits to hospital) fans, vacuum cleaner, and the washing machine were my preferred sounds but if all else failed the carpenters Lp on the record player would calm me and make me sleep ,my mum would also sing the songs to me at bed time as we didn't get a portable record Deck until 1985. I think I was very lucky to grow up listening to a very diverse and rich variety of music .

As an older guy now I often cry a little whenever I hear her voice. She was always a secret favorite when I was into hard rock and punk. One day, shortly after she passed, some friends and I were playing the "build a band out of those who are gone" game and I announced that she was now the only drummer I'll ever choose. I got stares, and at least one person's downturned mouth and slow head shake in agreement let me know that I was not alone.

This song was written by Paul Williams as a jingle for Crocker bank. Richard Carpenter heard the song on the commercial and contacted Williams about covering it. Williams only wrote about 60 seconds of the song, so he he had to finish it before Richard could arrange the song for the Carpenters sound. We've Only Just Begun is on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

A few months into 2023, I fell into yet another conversation about music with one of our managers at work and he told me how much he loved and missed hearing Karen Carpenter sing. So this summer when I was asked to play some solo instrumental guitar pieces for his retirement party, I learned this song. After I played it, this man whom I've known for thirty years and seen him only joking or dead serious about work, sat there looking at me with tears in his eyes and his wife by his side and said "You have no way of knowing this, but that's the song we had someone perform for us at our wedding." Thank you, Elizabeth, for reminding me of one of the best moments of 2023. Happy New Year!

I was born in 1963. Grew up listening to great music. We lost many performers way too early. I cried for two. John Lennon and Karen Carpenter. Her loss was especially sad for me because she gave so much joy to millions yet died without experiencing much joy in her own life. I still tear up listening to her voice. Truly one of a kind. So glad you have gotten to enjoy her voice.

Barbra Streisand also said something to Karen that was almost similar to Lennon's. The story goes that Streisand met the Carpenters at some social gala, took Karen aside, and said to her: "You have a marvelous instrument. Please don't waste it."

Re the Lennon encounter, KC is said to have turned to her companions and said "he couldn't have meant that"... I like this fantasy sequel (which requires a conclusion that Lennon "Imagined" wrong!)...Heaven, February 1983. John, there since late 1980, sees Karen arrive and beelines over. With a look of mixed admiration and reproof, he tells her, "I did mean it, you know, dear..." And then he whips out some drumsticks, hands them to her, and off they go to jam.
@Mrvictorfernandes
@Mrvictorfernandes 6 месяцев назад
@apreciouslife13 According to what her date Nicky Chinn said, they passed John Lennon as they were leaving an LA restaurant. John made a beeline to Karen and said something along the lines of "I just wanna tell you, love, that I think you've got the most fabulous voice" and walked on. Soon after Karen said to Nicky, "Did John Lennon really say that? John Lennon??? He couldn't have meant that!" That's the part of Karen's personality that is just so heartbreaking. When it came to her talents and the impact her gift had on others, she had a very low opinion of herself when it came to reciprocating the praise from her peers, especially those who saw her as the real deal.

As amazing as Karen's voice is, her brother is an incredible composer and arranger. Everyone focused on Karen, with few realizing that Richard wrote the songs specifically for her voice, and yet was seldom recognized for his own musical skills. They were "The Carpenters", but Richard always seemed to be a side note, in spite of the fact that without him, there wouldn't have been The Carpenters. I miss Karen because her voice was just so beautiful, and all we have now are these recordings from decades past. Over the years Richard has continued to do his thing, but always in the background. He has written amazing songs for so many people. The two of them were a perfect combination, and their voices blended so well together.

@@nondescriptbeing5944 Possibly but it may have been more a case of their parents investing their time and resources into Richard's prodigious musical talent, often to the detriment of the nurturing relationship their daughter should have enjoyed. Realising this, Karen experimented with musical instruments in an effort to become part of what was going on and settled on the drums, eventually becoming so proficient that Richard recruited her as drummer in his jazz trio.
@way2deep100
@way2deep100 9 месяцев назад
I believe that Richard was quick to realise that showcasing Karen's voice was the path to success after a couple of flirtations with his first love, jazz. The pop group he later formed with college friends and Karen as drummer and occasional singer was soon disbanded when, in his own words after he wrote an arrangement which required Karen to sing in a lower register than before, "magic happened." Carpenters (never THE Carpenters) was born and after the first couple of hits were pretty much Karen solos, he chose not to change a winning formula by remaining in the background, probably without ever appreciating how much farther his sister's prodigious and enduring voice would relegate his contribution in the public's perception.

So much has been said about Karen’s incredible vocals that it’s nice to see someone recognize Richard’s masterful orchestrations/arrsngements. How brilliant. One example. In the lyric “working together day to day” we see the lead and backing vocals come together for the first time. The lyric tells us and, bang, there it is. Genius. I still miss Karen so much. I cannot get through one of their songs without tearing up and often I’m openly weeping. This is one of those songs. Actually, she did receive vocal training - in the classical style - while at college. She was trained as a soprano (and was able to hit some amazingly high notes) but found that singing in her lower, chest voice was far more appealing to others listening to her. She was also able to sight-read. One example of her sight-reading ability is featured in the Carpenter's recording of "Trying to Get the Feeling Again." The vocal was a scratch-take that was originally intended to serve as a guide for the other musicians - and would be replaced with the "real vocal" later. Though the song never made it to the intended album (Horizon), it was released decades later on the album "Interpretations." If you listen to it closely, you'll hear Karen flip over the sheet music just after completing the first chorus. She was unfamiliar with the song and was reading the melody and the lyrics for the first and only time.

The thing I like best about this song, besides Karen's honey-sweet, butter-smooth vocals and the song's hopeful, positive message of new love, is the lush vocal landscape they paint with their voices. All of those 4 and 5 part harmonies and their use of Major 7th and Suspended 2nd and 4th chords to add those semi-dissonant movements in their phrasing - God, the goosebumps it gives me. No matter how many times I've heard this song over the years it still makes the hairs on my arms stand up straight when I hear those harmonies. Simply beautiful. Arguably, one of the finest contemporary female singing voices ever. Karen took over your heart with her voice, I have to admit, I can't listen to her singing without a tear in my eye, that's the power she possessed, not with decibels, but heartfelt clarity, her voice reaches inside of you, rendering you helpless, it's that beautiful. Richard's arrangement of course, plus his own great harmonies, highlighted Karens talent even more so. You're analysis is beautiful in itself, the joy in your face & smile is infectious, plus of course your skill in pinpointing every phrase & nuance, just brilliant!

This song is a very emotional one for me bc my mom was a huge Carpenters fan and she sadly passed away going on 13 years ago now. Seeing you enjoy it so enthusiastically on the same level she did made my heart incredibly happy so I thank you for that. That being said, I do have a request. She was a huge fan of the band Bread as well so if you could analyze the song "Everything I Own" I would be super grateful. Thanks again for the quality content and I look forward to the next one.

I love this analysis -- I learned a lot from this one, including that I am a side-to-side head banger, which I did not previously know! Although the song is so hopeful, there is a poignancy knowing that Karen Carpenter had only just begun her life, really. What a loss for music and what could have been. If you ever do another Carpenter song, consider Rainy Days and Mondays.

WOW! I hit the forward arrow and THIS came up . I just left the Bobby Hatfield video. I absolutely love The Carpenters! The joy of listening to their music, but at the same time it tears my heart out because she’s gone and the fantastic music we will never get to hear !!! Her phrasing is absolutely crushing! John was an Amazing composer!! If you’ve read their background you know Karen was a drummer 1st and no one knew she could sing ! Thank you!

Going on the title alone, this would certainly qualify as fitting for the start of a new year, while also avoiding the more obvious selections likely to crop up a bunch. Karen as usual offers her beyond-sublime level of singing. What a treasure of a voice she truly had. And every last melody and harmony line sounds so good, and sweet, and pop-perfect. Great vocal tone on “rather than tearing yourself down on the inside”, by the way. All in all one of the most joyous and enjoyable reactions I’ve seen in some time and likely ever will.

Hope you'll do "Superstar" for your next Carpenters song. It's a tiny bit darker, the sentiment of a girl who has an encounter with a celebrity musician, and she invests far more of herself into the enounter than he does - - it's basically the sentiment of a groupie. Guitarist Eric Clapton was the inspiration for it.

I learned a lot from your reaction to this video. There really is a lot to unpack here, and I loved how you picked it s all apart. Karen is THE BEST female singer of all time, and Tichsrd is a flipping genius at arrangements. And Karen is drumming on this one while she is singing far and above everyone else in the business. Those family harmonies are the result of both Karen & Richard who overdubbed many times - he is a wizard at doing that! You should explore more Carpenters videos. You will not be disappointed. They are all this great!

Great reaction! Richard is a skilled magician giving every drop of his skill and creativity not only to wow but also to enrapture his audience. Each song he pulls out many bags of tricks (candy store analogy) and many rabbits out of hats He not only creates his tricks for us to enjoy, but also creates for his assistant (karen) to shine and to give her a certain depth and beauty to impress his audience with. She unwinds each song into our hearts perfectly.

Whatever beauty and magnificence Karen had in her voice, the sheer genius of Richard cannot be overlooked. He did everything else but her voice. And if it hadn't been for a singer that didn't show, she'd have remained the drummer. He cajoled her into stepping up front, and in spite of the fact that she really didn't want to do it, the two of them provided some of the best music ever released.

I can only listen to The Carpenters in private, because it moves me to tears every time. I grew up in the 60's & 70's and they were a large part of my soundtrack going up. Side note - Paul Williams wrote the song with only one verse and no chorus for a commercial for a local bank in LA. Richard approached Paul to record it, so Paul had to finish the song. The woodwind: Tim Weisberg on flute.

Masterpiece. I was 12 in the early 70's and their romantic music matched my new dreamy feelings about girls. And I wasn't too cool yet to not admit to liking it. This was during the post 60's turmoil and Vietnam War protesting too. Many people thought rock was the best thing going. But a lot of people were into other music.

“We’ve Only Just Begun” has an interesting back story. I was 9 years old when I first heard this (or at least the first couple of verses) as part of TV ad for Crocker Bank, long before it was acquired by Wells Fargo. The ad was commissioned the song to help Crocker to attract young people and was very successful, but apparently it attracted customers the bank really didn’t want, young people with no collateral and poor or no credit so the campaign was ultimately suspended. Richard Carpenter heard the ad and he thought he recognized Paul Williams voice. He later ran into Williams and asked whether he had a complete version and Williams shared the bridge and an additional verse and the Carpenters took it to #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100, #1 on Adult Contemporary. Great music, incredible vocals, instrumentation and arrangements. A lovely 53 year old memory of probably the most perfect voice I’ve ever heard.
