A night in the Lake District sleeping in WARNSCALE BOTHY.

warnscale bothy camping in the lake district.
we set off to the lake district to find the UK'S most popular bothy warnscale bothy.
The warnscale bothy is one of two bothys within the area of honister slate mine in the lake districts which you will find just after a steep walk up and around the slate mine.
The first bothy you will come across is the famous dubs hut, then just over the river and up and around the other side you will come across the famous warnscale bothy.
If your thinking about staying in the famous dubs hut or warnscale bothy in the lake districts you will need to take fire work with you because the bothys are very popular and its very unlikely the bothys will have fire wood available.
Both dubs hut and warnscale bothys are very popular and fill up very fast with hikers and people visiting for the night for the Experience of sleeping in the bothys.. so try to be there AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

That is the beauty of Bothys. They are essentially emergency shelters in times of bad weather. And the generosity of people leaving food parcels can mean life and death in these hills. I stayed in a bothy in the Cairngorms over 15 years ago. They are life savers. I met a couple of Rangers who stayed the night. They told a story of a local that took the journey on New Years Eve (and it was a ten mile journey from civilisation) and all the visitor brought was a bottle of whiskey . Single malt I believe. But merriement was guaranteed. I planned to camp six miles from Aviemore on a Drovers trail, from Aviemore to Braemare, but Google maps doesnt show you the boulder fields on the way to Braemar, and the the Bothy was half way through the journey. :) No space to pitch a tent. Always prepare for an extra night, take more food than you need. It was an Interesting night which added about, maybe six miles to the journey. But what an experience! :) We were prepared with army rations, we had planned ahead, so the extra night wasn't a surprise. But that is the thing about hiking/ camping. Don't take just what you need for the nights planned. Take enough with you to cover any forceable event. That means maybe a couple more hydrated meals. So it wasn't so bad (apart from the, erm, negative results of army rations! :). If the Bothy is full there should be space top pith a tent outside. If you ever spend time in a Bothy, leave a token. An energy bar, or something else to eat. You never know if the next occupants need to take an extended visit due to aberrant weather conditions. And that is what Bothys are there for. To allow shelter to travellers in dangerous weather conditions. My advice, for what it is worth, is to leave food in tins, or something that cannot be chewed, as the local inhabitants (mice) make short work of cellophane wrapped goodies! 🤣 I am an old boy scout. So be prepared. When you walk in the mountains, wear suitable clothing and extra food and water. Sorry. I know that many people on here are experienced campers. But so many day hikers aren't prepare if bad weather comes in. Safety first x

Well said, I've been up the mountains, climbed a couple of Munro's too, yep weather can change in an instant. Seeing fighter jets hurtling below you from out of nowhere, now that's a Buzz and a half!!
@Angel-002
@Angel-002 7 месяцев назад
@@PaulGlancy-fp7obThose fighter jets are something else!! Some are usually training jets from RAF Valley on Anglesey as well but still give you a buzz if you are up above them when they fly past. Years ago I took my partner to Rhosneigre when the jets were flying. He got bored & was moaning & got out of the car muttering & complaining. I looked in the mirror & could see the jets lights & told him to look behind. As it came in to land & flew just over the top of us he ducked down 😂😂 It was so loud & then all you see is the red & heatwave from the jet engines.......he wasn't moaning then & had a brilliant time😂😂

@Angel-002 Hi, thanks for the reply. Leuchars in Fife alot come from too. I'm from a town just outside Glasgow called Cumbernauld, and on the odd occasion, we could see them practice "Dog Fighting" against the backdrop of "The Campies" or Campsie Fells as we sometimes called them. I'm not sure why it all stopped, but I heard they were scaring the Sheep, lol! Seriously. Thanks once again..Paul.

The sound is excellent Mate under extreme conditions! That new mic and softie really makes the different doesnt it. :) I have been to Honister slate mine before. The tour of the mine is excellent, if anyone wants to partake. And the coffee in the cafe is not half bad either :) Such a sad story about the owner. Helicopter journeys through those hills and valleys, well, not a good idea in low cloud or extreme wind conditions. But a great place to visit. And you have Buttermere no more than, oh three miles ish. Well worth a visit. The most picturesque lake in the Lake district. I know that you have camped at Sykes Farm before. Lovely place and lovely beer! :) Happy New Year to you Sir. Keep fighting the good fight :)
