He's a gem!! Not only is he a great trumpeter, but he could imitate Louis Armstrong like no one else I ever seen/ heard. In the late 1980s PBS in New York had a special on Louis Armstrong and Byron Stripling was the interpreter of that music. It was like watching and listening to Louis Armstrong. His sound was amazing. I would put him ahead of many trumpeters that make the top 50 list.
I can't believe I'm only now hearing this in 2021. At 36 years old, and Night in Tunisia being my favorite song. This is maybe the best trumpet solo I've ever heard.
+Carter Landon This was arranged by Eric Dixon, tenor sax player of the Basie band. Dennis Mackrel composed and arranged "And That's That," which is on the same DVD.
CARTER LANDON: ARE YOU SAYING THAT THE VERY DRUMMER ON THIS ALBUM ARRANGED THIS WHOLE PIECE? IS HE DENNIS MACKREL? THIS DRUMMER IS FABULOUS! SYLVIA - FL - 9/13/2019
One of the most under rated trumpet players around! Huge sound, can solo with amazing feeling and accuracy and can powerful play lead without sounding "thin" like many players today. It's ALL about the quality of the sound!
Man, this guy is one of the greats!!! I have most of Basie’s albums. That same year I saw Harry James and his orchestra I thought I had died and went to heaven, later the Woody Herman band. Wish this was still alive as it once used to be.
Duke Ellington is a philosopher of big band, where the sounds are the colors of a painting; Count Basie is the Albert Einstein of the big band, where the music are maths and physics.
THIS IS Soooo JAZZY! JUST THE WAY I LOVE JAZZ TO BE PLAYED. AND, CAN'T BRYON BLOW THAT TRUMPET WHILE HE IS SWINGING? I'M SWINGING WITH HIM. THE BAND IS SO GREAT. THE DRUMMER IS JUST KEEPING IT ALL TOGETHER AND HE DOESN'T MISS A BEAT. I LOVE DRUMS! SYLVIA -FL 9/19
OMG! Saw this edition of the band at Rocky River HS near Cleveland right around this time. Was a jazz major at Akron U and all the 'cats' were there...met Freddie Green & had a nice conversation with Thad afterwards, bucket list item CHECK! Huge debt to all these great gentlemen.....

I saw this same orchestra in 1986. Powerhouse doesn't even come close to describing the sound from this group of "Top-Shelf" musicians. Byron was spot on that night like usual. He's a Ferguson and Severinsen rolled into one!
this version of Tunisia cross to the bones and goes directly to the soul... Best version, Thad's conducting and Byron best soloist ever!! So young he was....just 24!! was there record for that? LP, CD, DVD?
