Check out my new jazz vibraphone course! www.timcollins...
"A Night In Tunisia" was written by Dizzie Gillespie and it is one of the most famous jazz tunes of all time.
It's one of those jazz tunes that seems a lot more complicated than it really is, mostly because of the way Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker were able to improvise such sophisticated and dense harmonic movements into the main key centers of the tune.
The solo form is AABA - the A sections are in D minor, while the bridge goes into G minor and F major. In this lesson, I demonstrate how to use the blues scale when soloing, as well as arpeggios and bebop lines outlining the 2-5-1 progressions.
I took three distinct approaches to improvising over the chords. Each one has specific elements that must be memorized, practiced, and internalized so that you can switch freely between the styles... or even better, just not think at all and play. If you download the PDF (for free) you can really see where the scale changes take place.

This video is really helpful, recently I started to hang out with a jazzist saxophonist and he asked me to play a bass solo for this tune and I always tend to use pentatonics because my jazz language is still low. Now I have a whole variety of sounds ideas and licks

Mainieri Grip Update: You might not like the grip, but it's practical because it can be a great way to work on pinky strength, which is more important for stevens grip, but still an important finger for pretty much everything

Wait also can you explain how you knew you could use the G,A, and F blues scale when playing for the E7 chords and D7. I did not know you could do that. I thought it had to be the same as the back track scales
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 3 года назад
I just used the D blues scale (without the D) on the Eb7 chord.. then you can add the D on the D-6 chord. Same thing on the bridge for the other blues scales.

I got a question (my english is poor i hope you understand me😢) You play the A7alt scale on Eb7, that actually they're the same function, can i apply that thing on other situations??? For example, if I see a progression like F7 | Bbmaj, can I play the B7alt scale on the F7 bar? :0
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 3 года назад
Great question - If you have an F7 to Bbmaj, you could play F7alt, OR you could play B7 lydian dominant - they are the same scale. Just like A7alt is the same scale as Eb lydian dominant (Eb7#11)

Great video. I have been playing jazz for years, but often get intimidated by the, for lack of a better word, Middle-East inspired tunes (like this and Caravan) that have become associated with altered scales and more advanced theory. Your tutorial broke things down in an approachable way that I will try tonight at my gig. I also enjoyed your presentation: superimposing notes and scales over video for clarity. Nice work, excellent communication skills, Tim!
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes 2 года назад
Thanks - FYI Caravan is more about harmonic minor than altered dominant.

So, I'm a beginning jazz guitar player. Even though I think I was born to be a crappy vibes player, I'm a crappy guitar player. Anywho, I've listened to so many RU-vid videos on how to solo and this was by far one of if not the best. Not sure why, it just really resonated will you be doing more of these? Would you like some song suggestions?

Tim ima guitar player and this is the best anyone has ever approached this - I have people telling me play a Bbmaj scale to the Dm and a Bmaj scale to the Eb7 . A lot of people just play the solo in Dm with some D harmonic minor stuff . I love the way you play it and I notice that I have been playing gutiar so long and you just made the simple blues scale sound better than i ever could and its like should I just quit now ?
