I tell ya Chaka is such a trouper. You can see she was starting to go hoarse but she still pulls it off. Lisa Fischer stepped in to do the high notes at that bridge. But trust and believe if Chaka wasn’t hoarse she would have handled that part just fine. But when you have the top notch background singers in the business, you have that cushion to lean on in such instances as this.
Man Chaka! You're from my hometown, Chi-Town! For those who don't know, that would be Chicago, Illinois. Chaka I've loved your amazing voice since I was just a kid and I first heard "Tell Me Something Good!" I absolutely love this vid' and recording, b/c it shows you at your vocal, and stylistic best. Also, especially since I'm a keyboardist, I gotta' tell you that the last name Ruff fits Michael Ruff well, 'cuz he is "Ruff" on 'dem keys, quite honestly, he's an absolute beast of a player. So glad for this post. I'm Out! 🎹
I was during the european tour in Belgian Brussels.. wow ..what a band… Jimmy Haslip on bass Michael Ruff (md)on keys Snuffy Walden in Lead Guitar Jeff Johnson Guitar and last but not least Queen of Funk Chaka Khan
Wow I remember all these artists from my early los angeles days, jimmy haslip, snuffy Walden, of course Michael Ruff, and Chaka has always been the Queen, no apologies. This was incredible. So much spectacular musicianship. Chaka has no peer. 💜
Love this. Hoarse and high but the show must go on. I don't know how she maintained. I know her label Warner Brothers was really working her nerve to make another album like I feel for you so at this time she had was under a lot of pressure. I admire her cause I could not work under so much pressure. I know that music industry can drive you to drink
Lisa Fischer has always been that girl. She was also background for Luther Vandross at one point. She had some of the best teachers in the industry and she left her own mark on the industry as well.
She sang with Luther Vandross. Also won a Grammy for the song how can I ease the pain.Check out Twenty feet from Stardom a documentary about. some of the greatest background singers. Beautiful and incredible singer.
Nice Band and great vocals. I would have wanted to hear more jazz and effort in the synth solo. Hancock plays one of his best synthesizer solos on the original recording.
@@imthezongz I agree with you that Larry Williams is a great player. His solo on Al Jarreau’s Spain is one of my all time favorites and I can play it note for note. However, both written data and music analysis confirm that the synth solo on ATMSLO is played by Herbie Hancock. If you don't believe me You have to present hard evidence to back up your countering argument.
@@vmertane Ok I was wrong and you are right. I stand corrected. 🙂 It's just that I like Larry W. so much. I can also still play the Spain solo, I remember it as one of the hardest things to notate in the 1980's. Did it with a ½ inch Revox tape recorder, slowed down to half tempo. 😁
Egypt and Tunisia you ask ??? Every red blooded American knows that both places are in Texas. We must be the "Kings of Geography" because we produce the most maps and 12 inch globes.🌍🌎🌏..But I guess we don't study them though...lol I love Chaka even on a mediocre day. Also nice smooth keyboard stylings and it jogged my memory about Lisa Fischer. She had impressive range back then.
Some powerhouse sangers! Love Chaka and Lisa, but the other singers sang a lot where Chaka would normally sing, she sounded hoarse, somebody said she was high, not sure but she was known to show up like that.
@@sweetoneloves6811it's no secret that Chaka had drug and alcohol issues. I could tell she was high by looking at her eyes. I don't hold it against her the music industry could drive one to drink. I've seen her 4 times live and she was at her best each time so I'm happy.
Not as good as compared to her original band. W O W TOO WATERED DOWN. Her vocals are good here not great like always & Chaka is the Greatest singer to ever do it! Bass & Guitar are dope but the others are too rockish for this piece.
This is definitly not the best period for her.. and not the best live version of this very difficult song. Listen to the one at the Roxy back in 1981: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XyzrlndLVbI.html
